White Belt

White Belt (1/10)

  1. Rank is a record of proficiency. Many do not realize true rank can be lost with inactivity.
  2. Always consult the instructor first. A good rule of thumb is- your partner controls the level of contact. If they ask for less contact, it is better to comply.
  3. There are valid pressure points, but you have to get extremely close to use them. I prefer striking and submission.
  4. There is nothing wrong with training in several styles as long as they are taught by reputable instructors.
  5. Sometimes just 25 of each kick and punch without breaking is all you can fit in.
  6. Many schools will award lower black belts to children. However, many require age requirements for 3rd and up.
  7. Communication is the best weapon in beginner sparring. Ask questions, and communicate with your partner. Most people like to train safely.
  8. Normally patches do not take dye. You can dye without removing the patches.
  9. Very few do all the katas. Even fewer do them the original way.
  10. Martial Arts are for everyone. You will get back what you put in.
  11. I know many submission artists, even middle aged ones, who have successfully returned after surgery. Be patient. Take it slow.
  12. In most cases, in the beginner levels, activity and aggression go a long way. Many beginners will often just stand there. Be active. It definitely can not hurt.
  13. Power without tempo is more martial than art.
  14. I prefer point sparring. It is more precise and controlled with less chance of judging errors.
  15. Patience in achieving your goals is the hardest part.
