  1. hang on a minute radok are you trying to say katas are actually useful to become a good fighter? ok whatever. first of all mma isnt about just saying i know karate and kickboxing thats what it is but to the fighter its about taking the best things out of those arts. i dont thing cross training in about 4 arts is very useful because it becomes a bit too much. but the idea that karate is betetr than a good mma fighter is absurd, that fighter might know karet anyway along with muay thai kicks or bjj grappling.i seriously dont think katas dont have much practical value. i would say that a good fusion would be perhaps two good string arst plus knowledge of a grappling style. perhaps wing chun and muay thai to form a striking fusion along with bjj. what do people reckon of this? tjs i would esspecially like to hear your comments on this?
  2. first of all remember this thread is not about capoiera versus another but but i have to say tjs is right. no u cannot judge a whole ssytem and every system is good it depends on the practitioneer but end of the day u cannot seriosuly expect it to handle it self on the street, it has good side efefcts like flexibiility etc. but in a tight closed street are you really gonan start break dancing, another martials artist of a maore practical direct style of the same level would destroy him. but back to the main question. wing chun is about modification wing chun is your basic then anything that works for you on top that fits in with the wing chun core principles is accepted. make wing chun your own personal style, you start of being taught then you teach yourself but it has to fit in with the main principles. yes in theory this breakdancing thing may work but its not for wing chun, simplicity is our key, and we do not want to 'fool' our opponents we should be comfortable in our own fighting zone. so no wing chun would not accept the modified stances.
  3. lol, that was kinda funny. but it does seem more like karate versus judo but u know if he was a proper striker he would have known about distance judgement..........lol just messing. good clip
  4. well how long have you been doing boxing for? you need something that will enhance your overall style. i mean you need not do some martial styles with strong emphasis on hands movement because boxing fills that need anyway. i would definately say wrestlin or bjj. but muay thai will also be very good because it will enhance your boxing, make you aware of techniques used to subdue boxers and will also add kicks to your arsenal.
  5. exactly, your own personal jkd should be what would help you on the street. you should feel comfortable with what your doing and it should become reflex then it would be useful.
  6. you made good comments but i just wanna point out that if you actually asses my last post you will see im not against boxing at all infact i was praising it, however i was also trying to help people understand the flip side, its not a case of pros or cons its a case of points of view. but as for your comments - you said that atrained kicker will ahve an advantage BUT if ur in range wotever, i know you could almost always find a counter but that wasnt my point i was trying to say an advantage is an advantage. i know boxers are extremmely adept at slipping and punching techniques but didnt i say that, i do think that power is a main factor tho i mena i dont think boxing blocks for example can match the blocks or evasion techniques of extreme close range as well....wing chun! and some other arts, remember there are certain characteristics which styles have that work for them and the practitioner. and yes i agree a boxer would destroy an untrained person or even tarined person at close range, but think for example how a boxer would react to a trained muay thai fighter with VERY hard and fast kicks, all it would take would be a feww to make himfall, but then on the other hand all it would atke would be a few punches from the boxer to knock the other guy out. well there u have it, u just ahve to make it work for you. remember im not against you, u seem to be pro boxing it would be no un if i was aswell, if you were anti boxing trust me i would appear much more pro boxing, its to add variety to the conversation. thanks
  7. if your trying to say jeet kune do as in what it means then simplified it means 'cross-training'. example two people who do say - karate. both proficient however one knows certain concepts from kickboxing that work for him perhaps the punches are better for him. i would say he has understood jeet kune do. he will have a better advantage. my perception of jeet une do is basically filling in the gaps in your core martial arts and getting rid of what you dont need.
  8. cmon lads lets stay on topic here, im a traditional martial artist. i belive that boxing does have very good practical apllications. i mean the difference between a normal guy and someone who goes every week to box, gets hit learns to punch harder im pretty sure he will be tough. on the other hand, this is mostly to the guy who started the thread, boxing is effective but remember it is more of a sport orientated art, and i think the lack of kicks could be a draw back. now dont make assumptions about what im saying about kicks. ima wing chunner so im not into all the fancy kicks either but against a good kicker who is trained to kick low powerfully and fast it could prove a handful. in boxings defense again, i mean cmon simply having hard punches and knowing how to apply that energy is very useful, and i really dont think a boxer is going to start 'boxing' i.e. looking for jabs so he can get points in the street. thats right adrenaline will take over and he wll start punching hard so unless u can really block fast powerful fats punches u better run. overall id just like to say boxing is better than nothing and is very good one could argue there are better self defense arts but to say boxing is useless is ignorant.
  9. hello everyone, i currently do wing chun and i enjoy it, however inw ing chun we cant spar and ive always thought cross training was good and simply coz muay thai has sparring i think just sparring every week is very good. i just wanted to ask you lot if you reckon it would be good for me the things in muay thai and would they fit in with my wing chun stuff to you know improve me overall? also would you say its better for me to go kickboxing or muay thai? and also how much is single work apart from sparring ,meaning bag work etc. so i can asses how much i could really do at home. im think of starting with my mate whose been on muay thai for while and joining in a week or so. also any other useful information would be appreciated. thanks
  10. In wing chun we do have conditioning for our knuckles such as knuckle pres ups but then traditionally hours spent on a wall bag toughens our knuckles up quite a lot. but why only wing chun im pretty sure all styles have punches using their knuckles why wouldnt they get broken? i mean knuckles are knucles and if someone does try to smash a wall with bare fist then whatever style they practise it will hurt them. but wing chun does tech us very accurate knuckle positioning to get maximum effect.
  11. yeah i am part of a school now. its an organisation actually and every now and then some of the classes where mats are available, bjj is taught. every few weeks we are taught a few grappling moves and practise them with a partner. i think this sis really good as even our sifus who think wing chun can handle any situation think just incase its good to learn some grappling. i wanted to know more specifical;ly how i could improve my powere to develop deadly punches, and to improve the speed of my punches. any tips?
  12. hello everyone, i just wanted to know, if anyone did wing chun here who could give me a few tips on how i could train at home to improve my wing chun. also i wanted to know do any wing chun people here have ground fighting incorporated in their classes or grappling of anykind? do you think this would be useful in conjuction with wing chun? thanks
  13. hello everyone, i just wanted to know if anyone has any tips on how i could build up proper powerful punches with tried and tested methods. i have recently got a punch bag set up, so wot should i put in it etc. and how should i punch? i also wanted to know the science behind the punch bad. it was obvious at first but then i learnt its for knuckle conditioning, and i thopught but just coz ur knuckles will be mnore resistant how does that make ur actual punches stronger and more powerful. could someone explain this, how punches will actually become more powerful on a punch bag? thanks
  14. hello everyone, ive been surfing these boards for a while now but this is my first post. i hope no one gets my wrong by my name (i thought someone would have it so i kinda typed it in seeing wot would happen) i mean i do love my art and therefore am going to think its superior to other arts in most aspects but i dont have a narrow minded view i like to listen to other opinions, the theory behind JKD is one that i belive in. i see it as in having a solid base martial art a primary one if u wnat with other useful skills. anyway i just wanted to know wot art you lot think would be good with Wing Chun. i felt bjj or some other grappling art would be the perfect compliment for it. so wot u lot think?
