  1. Ameri-Do-Te has incorporated some Ninjitsu into it. Here are Master Ken's thoughts on the matter. Enjoy ChuckD
  2. This happens to me as well and I do not realize I have tensed up. Sometimes I have to actively relax my muscles and even them I'm sometimes told to loosen up. If I find something that works I'll pass it along, otherwise realize your not alone
  3. Oh thanks for sharing the videos by the way. I've certainly found them interesting!
  4. IMHO I think it depends on the student and how advanced they are. If you have a brand new student with no previous experience a basic approach may work best were they are shown a technique and then add the application afterwards. I know from personal experience I've gotten a deer in the head light feeling when thrown right into an application situation without first getting a feel for the technique in question.
  5. Thanks for posting. I really liked the efficiency of movement. Let us know which kata it is from, that would certainly help a beginner like me get a better feel for what is going on.
  6. I second what JR 137 said. I think once you relax some more your speed will increase. One thing i would suggest is during your kicks you open up your hands, this is very common and takes conscious effort not to do since it is natural to put your arms out for balance. Try practicing some kicks where the kicks are executed while keeping your guard in place. Anyway thank your for posting the videos, I'm sure if I had a video of me sparring I'd be calling out all kinds of stuff to change
  7. I found the lbs for you Sithlord!
  8. These may or not pertain http://moosin.com/2014/03/is-your-school-a-mcdojo/
  9. I wonder if people fibbed some and the lost interest might be higher but they don't want to admit it to themselves.
  10. TKD when I was younger for 7 years. Now IsshinRyu for ~2 years.

    My Seisan

I think it is interesting to see the differences in Seisan just between different branches of Isshin Ryu
  12. Wow. So many different restrictions. I think the best thing anyone can do is when traveling is to do a quick check of the laws to make sure you stay on the right side of things. Rather or not you are going state to state in the United States or country to country. CD
  13. Reporting from the state of North Carolina in the United States - I don't think there are any laws regarding those types of weapons other than not having them concealed. In this state we also have full open carry of firearms permitted (minus schools, government buildings etc) and concealed carry of pistols with a permit. Laws by state and local municipalities can vary. CD

Props for putting yourself out there like that. Shows you probably have a strength of character that some don't (I don't for sure). Keep on with your journey! ChuckD
  15. Basically what Sensei8 said Alot of time I see people focusing on the kicking foot while ignoring the food they are standing on. Sometimes i will just focus on that by chambering the kick and checking that the support foot has turned into place. In the case of a side kick I like for my support heel to be pointed towards the target with the toes going away from the target. This should help get your body in better position to produce more power on target. Good luck Chuck
  16. hmmmm We had a Christmas party and i was playing dodge ball with the kids. Running across the room I hear a pop (people around me hear it too) and my big toe felt weird. I look down and see blood. I had rolled my toe kind of under my foot and pulled the toe nail out from the root. Didn't hurt but it bleed for a week and I'm still waiting for the nail to fall off. I limped myself back to dojo though though not as agile as I was before (not that i'm all that agile). If my back is acting up typically i can hardly walk much less go to class :/ (herniated disk) ChuckD
  17. We start learning Bunkai right after learning a kata. We sometimes have entire classes dedicated to Bunkai for various kata. Granted Bunkai complexity changes as you advance.
  18. Awesome. Welcome back to the MA world. I've found the people at our Dojo to be warm and inviting to all that attend as well. Seems to be a pretty common thread

3 days a week. 2 hours on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Tuesday and Thursday is 1 hour of kids class that i help with and 1 hour of adult class. I got 3 kids and a full time job. It can get tight with time but we prioritize it so it usually works out unless I'm out of town or my wife is out of town.

I've had no luck. My daughter however loves it and my youngest daughter (5) is asking about going.
  21. All, I'm not an instructor, just a student. Today our dojo lost its assistant instructor. Please know that as martial arts instructors that you touch and change your students lives everyday and class. Take care and live life like there might not be a tomorrow. CD
  22. It is and will be ok. The fact that you turned and sit while your opponent was being tended to is respectful. Also the fact that you apologized to your training partner and the fact he was smiling at you afterwards indicates there are no hard feeling on his part. It looks like there was no ill intent on your part and the others in your dojo are not upset with you so I would recommend getting back out there and train. I've had this happen to me and other at various times and the thing it the person doing the injury is typically more upset then the person getting injured. So get back out there
  23. I disagree. I've not been in MA long but it seems one dimensional to judge someone on one aspect.
  24. I hate writing with a passion That is why I'm an engineer.
