  1. What would you do if you were training at the dojo and working with a teen and you realized they were "cutting" (meaning self-mutilation)?
  2. $172/m (first family member), $ 99/m per family member after that with a 5% increase every year on everybody. If you want weapons training it is $200/m per person All the above is with a max limit of twice per week, 4 classes to choose from. ** No testing or belt fees
  3. Thanks for sharing your experiences. My latest plan is I have been practicing bag combinations counting backwards (10 Mississippi, 9 Mississippi..) hoping maybe eventually while I am sparing I can count in my head, focusing on that and not on actual fighting and maybe fighting can just become muscle memory?
  4. Thanks All. I think I have mostly dealt with it in my life but kumite and self defense trigger it. I did tell my Sensei within days after a flashback I had during kumite. Since then he has told me privately he can tell by a glaze in my eyes and my body language when I am coping with it. I have NOT had a flashback during class but I do get the fight/flight feeling and emotional aspect of it. He suggested I come up with something motivational that I recite in my head while fighting.
  5. I am a 38yr old woman who started 1.5yrs ago and I have terrible coordination and balance. I have sprained my ankle twice and hurt my knee all in the first year. SO ..... as part of therapy for my weak ankle I work on balance (strengthening my ankle). I practice combinations on a standing bag. For my roundhouse I practiced holding my deck rail for balance with a standing bag outside. Now (winter) we have a swinging bag in our finished basement and I hold a house support column when I need to. I also do workout classes at my local YMCA for strength and balance did the "couch to 5K" program. These last two things being done with others less in shape (like me) helped me with confidence a lot. Hang in there and practice everyday, and stay physically fit. I lost 40 lbs.
  6. Has anyone else dealt with "flashbacks" or PTSD feelings during training? For me it most often happens during kumite, especially if I get my back against a wall. It has also happened during self defense. Or have any of you helped a student thru this?
  7. finding a place at home to practice, especially during colder and wet weather when I can not practice outside.
  8. Daily I try to find a private place/time for a few mins of Kata. if i can exercise a few days that is great too (like go for a jog, do some push-ups, situps etc). My 6 yr old son and I have ever done push-ups and situps on my iphone app waiting while on vacation .... others can stare all they want, we have fun with and laugh and challenge each other (my 6 yr old can do more push-ups than me).
  9. At home I practice in private on our deck, and every day at work (dependent on weather) I find a spot on the lawn away from people and security cameras to practice kata. One time waiting on a really long line at Walt Disney World my son and I practiced, obviously not in private
  10. 12 mins which is about 7 miles
  11. $160/month for 2 days a week but can pick from 4 classes per week, $99/month more for each additional family member.
