Which style do you think prepares a person for a real life fight. From multiple attackers to people jumping out and attacking you. Which would provide a good history and morals system without sacrificing the use of it in a real encounter. This thread wasn't made so that users of one style could have a chance to put down the other style, it is just a friendly debate of the pros and cons of each style.

Bruce Lee vs Jackie Chan
LightFighterZero replied to TKD_McGee's topic in Martial Arts Gaming, Movies, TV, and Entertainment
Ali, Jackie isn't all that big in Hong Knog?? I never knew that. I always thought he was kinda big everywhere. Well from what I know here in the states, both made a big impression. Personally I think it would have been great to see the two in a movie together. Or a maybe a small little publicity sparring round or sumthing. Anyways how are things in HK? The last time I went there was a couple of years ago. From what I remeber it was are really cool place. Oh yeah and I agree with bth Kyle-san and kickchick. I mean probably before Jackie wanted to live up to be like Bruce Lee, but then later be probably realized that he wanted to make his own impression and not just mirror bruce lee's. -
Bruce Lee vs Jackie Chan
LightFighterZero replied to TKD_McGee's topic in Martial Arts Gaming, Movies, TV, and Entertainment
Ali, Yeah well I guess u are right that Bruce Lee would probably win in a fight against each other. He is more the kinda guy that stands his ground and fights his heart out. If you ever watched a normal Jackie Chan movie, he is constantly being chased around by a gang of people. He uses his surroundings against the other people, but he rarely actually goes one on one against someone without using the environment around him. (ex. ladders, boxes, etc.) So I guess you would be right about Bruce lee winning but then again they both fight in a different sort of way. -
Sorry BKJ but I don't think I could answer that queestion. I went to the shotokan place today. It is kind of a small place but it is know for being the best in the oldest and best in the county. The instructor that teaches is a Sensai who is a native Hawaiian know for his acheivements. He is a sixth Dan and was appointed to the derector of technical development by the the World Federation of Karate Do Orginization. I don't really know much more about him besides that he is a nice guy. I have watched him during one of the classes a couple of years ago and remember him being very attentive and helping toward all of the students. That is the chief instructor though. There are a couple of a smaller instructor is which I will probbaly be placed under. I have yet to experience class time with them however. Also, about how many classes do you think I should watch before I make a major decision? What should I look for in the instructor? What should I look for in the facility? Should I have to by my uniform and etc. separetely, or should it come with the rate of addmission? And can you plese tell me other things that I should take care in asking the instructor or looking for in the dojo?? Thanks for the help..

Thanks for the imput ramymensa, and no what you were saying wasn't boring. Yeah, I'm not looking for a style that's gonna be like a new religion. I just want something that has meaning to it behind the art. Not just learing how to kick or punch someone. But I'm not saying that some styles are like that. I'm just saying the way some people teach can be kind set on just sport fight right? Because I know in football it is about four things: Bringing it hard and bringing it often, Playing as a team, Putting 200% effort in, And knocking the guy that you line up on into the dirt . But that's how my coach would always teach us. Moorpark High Musketeers Freshman Football (9-1) Back to Back Maramonte League Champs!! "All for one and one for all!!"

Thanks for the tip SaiFightsMS. I think I have found my decision; I'm gonna go with Shotokan, But first I have to check the place out again (Last time I went was when I was like 8 ). From what I know and remember, it is a very good school and has very positive results. I believe that they have many students that have won competions in minor meetings. I am worried that they are too sport oriented and not really spiritually oriented. (you know what I mean, like values and things like that). I'm looking more for a value oriented style then one focused on defeating other people for titles and etc. I'll have to check it out for my self. Once again, I'd like to thank everyone who has helped advise me on making a decision. I'll keep on adding on to this subject so check in frequently. Hahah if you think this decision ended my questions you are wrong; they have yet to truly begin. As they say there comes a time when you think it is the end, but in reality it is just the beginning; I guess this is one for those times...

Hi, I've been visiting the forums for a while and decided to become a member a couple of days ago. I just wanted to introduce myself, I know it's a little late but better late than never right? Well here it goes: I'm a 15 year old guy thinking about getting into the marital arts. I live in southern Californa USA. I am thinking about taking either Shotokan Karate, Hapkido or Taekwondo but I can't decide which one would work for me. If you think you can help me please look at the address here to find my other posts concerning the topic of me choosing a style. It's nice to meet you all and I hope to grow to know some of you guys better. I guess it's bye for now then..... http://www.karateforums.com/viewtopic.php?p=74311#74311[/url]

First of all I would like to thank all the people here for taking the time out of thier lives to help me try and decide on a style. This weekend I'm going to revisit all of the places that I am thinking about going and see if they offer the things like you guys said. I was also wondering if Shotokan is one of those arts where you can practice by yourself and not with a partner. Like after practices late at night or early int the mornings. I wanted a style where I could just got through the motions in my spare times and perfect them without having to physically hit some one.

I was planning to get into Martial arts for more than just self defense MuayThai Fighter. That was one of those things that I was hoping to acheive in the future, it isn't the main goal I am striving for. I am looking more for a art that provides self satisfaction. I know that some of those style you listed could actually help me in self defense, but I'm looking toward traditional arts to find that sense of self disipline. Thatks for the imput though, I'll take it into consideration. I know I'm a little new to the martial arts scene, but isn't it kinda harsh relating traditional styles like karate and taekwondo to ballet? Well I think I understand that they are all use movements that are more inspoirational to watch then other styles, but don't they deserve more credit than that? Or maybe I'm wrong. I dunno... Well if I am they "sorry,my bad"

Sorry chh but I"m not located around San Diego. I"m more around the Ventura county area which is between Los Angeles and Santa Barbara. Thanks for the help though. Also, does anyone here have an idea of what kind of martial art that I would best suit me. What I am looking for and what my abilities/body type is listed above somewhere in past posts. The places that are near me that are my top choices are Shotokan Karate, American Hapkido, Taekwondo, and Tang Soo Do. Can someone please help me?

Thanks for the help guys, but I'm still a little iffy. The shotokan place here has been highly recommended from the people that I have spoken with. My uncle has even taken classes there and says it is the best he's even been to. Also they have a sort of reputation for being good, many people who have studied martial arts there have won trophies. I have been to a class once but that was along time ago. My dad wanted me to get into the martial arts when I was younger, but I knew that I wasn't mentally ready yet. Now I beliecve that I am ready for the commitment. What kind of styles are Goju and Isshinryu anyway? I've never really heard of them before. I was looking for an art that was more involved in striking, but also had a good and efficient system of grappling or locks. Then Again I was thinking about getting into one art first then taking the other at the side in a couple of years, but the question there is which one should I do first Hapkido or Karate. Oh yea, and the Taekwondo place that I was looking at is located down my street. It is a very clean and well maintained place, it is supposedly part of this blackbeltusa thing. You can check out more about it on https://www.blackbeltusa.com. There was also a hapkido calss offered there too, but the one that I was looking at was a fully dedicated hapkido place. I hope this helps.

I wanted to get into martial arts for some self satisfaction. I want to train at something and become the best of my abilities. I want to learn more about the history and ways of old asia. I know this may sound corny right now but I just can't really explain why I want to join in. In the futrue I am looking for self disipline, self respect, self confidence, and maybe a sort of self defense. I'm not really expecting to get the things that I want, but I am willing to try and strive for those goals. Martial arts may help me or not, but I'm still gonna try. If you need to know anything else just ask and I"ll tell you. I hope that this is enough info for now. If not just drop me a little reply.
