  1. We taught Mr. Doyle's program in my former school. I have read his books too. My new school does not use his material but does teach/encourage peaceful conflict resolution.
  2. Congratulations...a good choice! As far as credentials go you can check with the association itself and he should be forth coming with the information about kung fu-I say just ask.
  3. You are psyching yourself out. I deal with this everyday and it is often quite the challenge to convince someone to swallow a pill. There is no real thrick, you just have to decide to do it. One thing I try on kids is ask them if they can swallow big 'ol hunks of MacDonalds hamburgers (they always say yes). Then I point out that the pill is so tiny compared to that burger....just pretend it's the burger. It usually works...on kids. Adults are harder because they have convinced themselves for years that they CAN'T do it... and there's too much thinking about it. You have to convince yourself that you can. Good luck!
  4. Because of our association with Ernie Reyes. His schools are quite a talent pool for that kind of stuff. Don't know about the "cheese" though.
  5. Not yet. Although I have seen a group of 20 blue belts fail...they had to return the next day at 6am to re-test. Caused quite a stir!
  6. Definitely a good choice for building stamina and strength. It does depend on how much you do but I would think any amount would be beneficial in some way.
  7. I found that my a base in traditional throwing arts was a great advantage when I studied BJJ. Made getting to the ground a whole lot easier and much more enjoyable
  8. I had to break bricks for all my dan tests. 1 brick, 2 bricks, 3 bricks.
  9. A bit heavier than the kwan dao wouldn't you say!
  10. You don't see the naginata much these days. Glad to see someone out there is still using one.
  11. Why they encourage it? The goal of the program is to teach school owners to bring those character building elements & programs to their own schools by experiencing/living them first. The test itself is a personal challenge, not for everyone...but the information is for everyone who is interested in building their school and developing/challenging students in different ways. Visitors to the site are instructed to implement any of the test requirements they see fit and/or sign-up.
  12. Good luck. It definitely is not the most enjoyable experience but I hope to return to my previous level of activity....otherwise I wouldn't have gone through it.
  13. I train in Penn Yan & Canandaigua. Don't have my own club yet....working on building up the Penn Yan school first. At present I am only teaching as I am recovering from knee surgery and can't actively train.
  14. My gut tells me that the Olympics should stick to sports, otherwise you risk changing the nature of the art....and it could have negative effects on the art as a whole. Just look at TKD. Olympic Style is a sport but traditional TKD gets compared to it and it's reputation suffers. Personally, I don't care what peole say about the art but it can cause rather heated debates and incidences of bashing . On the other hand, I would love to see some high-end grappling that isn't associated with the UFC (or other NHB type scenario). I think it would be awesome!
