  1. I get looks because of my accent! It is a mix of Westerner and Canadian(my dad was raised in Wisconsin and for some reason has a Canadian accent??????) People have no idea where I am from..they just say"You're not from around here are you!". As for "supper" I have to confess, being that my dad grew up in Wisconsin, that I say it. Dinner is lunch...supper is the evening meal. They pretty much get used interchangeably around the house though. Oddly enough, my hubby was raised back east and doesn't use the term (?????)...maybe he spent too much time in California!!! We also sat on a Davenport and wore dungarees...which gets you teased alot when you live in a rodeo town in Colorado! But...we never said "pop"!!! Where the heck.....?????
  2. Puts things into perspective doesn't it.
  3. What's a hoagie?"Subs" on the West Coast baby! At least these New Yorkers have their food right!!!!! How about "pop"? We call it "soda" where I'm from (West Coast)...the kids went crazy over that one for a while when we first moved here!! And people here (NY) go "up to the store/school/Joe's/etc instead of "down to the store/school/Joes/etc. What's up with that!! And speaking of "UP", it drives me crazy when I hear people say " We were up to Bob's yesterday." Does any body in this state use the word "at"?!!!! I'm done.....for now!
  4. It was many years ago and I thought I got benefit from it...stronger fingers, etc., but now I have arthritis on both my hands and wrists from many years of use and abuse and really don't know how much that training contributed to it or delayed it's occurance.
  5. I've had Hawaiian , Japanese, Chinese, Phillipino, and American. They all had something valuable to give and were excellent teachers of their arts.
  6. I have used a bucket of sand in the past. Also a bag filled with shot and hung from the ceiling.
  7. I was always taught "relaxation-explosion" which involves the entire body and serves to channel kime. Of course, I am still working on it!
  8. Welcome! I am getting ready to start a program out of the local community center. Maybe we can share some ideas!!!
  9. A majority of my training has been on the West Coast but I now have re-located to the East Coast. My observation is that martial arts are less popular back East and that there are less schools/styles to choose from.
  10. I am in the process of setting up a program through the local Youth Center (Grades 7-12) as our school district is VERY RESISTANT to any outside or non-traditional programs. I would love to get into the school itself...maybe this will be a foot in the door for me. I have already been approached by a neighboring school district to come into pre-K classes....which, time permitting, may be a great "commercial" for my program. I agree that community service is what it is all about.
  11. Heian Nidan may be a bit basic for your belt level but.....if you execute it with the speed and power a red belt should possess you will do well. Remember to visualize the intent of the form and be true to it.
  12. Sounds like a great program that is needed in many schools! How did you go about approaching the administration to get such a program started? Are there special certifications required by your distrtict, etc.? I am really interested in your proram!
  13. WTF sanctioned tournaments usually only allow WTF forms but if it is indeed open you should be able to do whatever you want. I believe that a Heian was performed by an instructor we both know at this tournament last year (I may be mistaken though) Just remember the pattern itself is not as important as the techniques involved.
  14. What about boating, boating at night, and almost getting killed boating at night?
  15. I'd like to say something smart but my mind is boggled at the moment by that story...unbelieveable!!
  16. Will be moving this to Health, Training. & Fitness.
  17. I can say that about a few of the boys at my school .
  18. Injury induced arthritis is a direct result of what you do to your joints. It is not hereditary. Improper technique, repetitive motion, and acute injury can all cause minute or large scale cartilidge damage which results in cartilidge loss and bone on bone contact. Inflammatory arthirits (rhuematoid) can be hereditary and/or brought on by infection or other medical condition. The inflammation causes cartilidge death and deformity which results in bone on bone contact and/or deformed joints.
