  2. Welcome!
  3. Welcome to KF!
  4. Sounds like some chest pounding on the other guy's part.....talk to sensei and give it a go.
  5. I have studied several different styles, including some BJJ, and while I do have my favorites I respect each style and its players equally. I agree that there are those who ego driven and give their style a bad name...unfortunately this is not unique to BJJ by any means.
  6. Well said!!! Sounds like you have a good start in the martial arts and have your head in the right place.
  7. Welcome to KF-great intro!
  8. Welcome!
  9. SO true! Used as a training tool they are very effective at developing skills...and they look cool, however, while learning to execute such kicks develops balance, timing, strength, coordination, and speed they are not practical in most, if not all, situations.
  10. We have very strict etiquette at our school-Sifu insists that his lineage be honored in this way and I don' t mind at all! Bow when ...you enter the school ...when you enter the training area ...when you cross in front of the system flags ....when you cross in front of sifu or a higher ranking bb teaching class ...before you approach sifu ...before you leave sifu (this include backing away/not turning your back) ...greeting parents and fellow students ...turning from the front of the training hall ...turning to the front of the training hall ...you begin partner drills and end partner drills ...when you change directions or move forward/back from a line ...you greet each other socially out side the school We also have etiquette for meals and meetings with each other: ...senior sits to sifus left ...no one sits before sifu does ...no one eats before sifu does ...no one leaves before sifu does When sifu is not present these rules apply to the senior ranking black belt.

    Hello!

Welcome to KF! You never know if you will like it or not until you try it!
  13. I would rather do it myself than have to be at the mercy of someone else's bad day!
  14. Welcome and congratulations on starting martial arts-you'll love it!!!
  15. You must be 16 to hold full dan ranking and to become a certified instructor in our system. The process of becoming an instructor however begins when they tie that white belt on-no matter their age.
  16. I believe you need to be 13 to start their Instructor Certification Program so....? Any ATA people out there have any input on this?
  17. A good principle but "coordinated" does not necessarily mean "simultaneous". Is the intention of the creator of this principle to mean "simultaneous" or is it meant to have a more holistic application?
  18. Welcome to KF!
  19. Great topic-here's my 2 cents: Head turning has been taught to me in all styles I have studied, for all the reasons described above....but let me take it further. I teach the head turn as not only a visual targeting system but as an adjunct to the technique itself (usually a block, sometimes a strike) in that the head turn initiates the shoulder turn, which facilitates the chamber and creates tension in the hips which allows for generation of more speed/power. The same "theory" applies when teaching spinning kicks-especially wheel kick (reverse turning kick, spinning hook kick-whatever you choose to call it) and 360 round house. I relate this to the initiating head spin when throwing a 360 on a snowboard-without it you are not able to generate enough rotation (and hence speed/power) to land it properly. What does snowboarding have to do with martial arts you ask? Everything...its all kung fu (and physics of course)!!!
