  1. This happens in some traditional japanese schools. Tests are impromtu to separate those that give it all every class, not just "when it counts" for a test.
  2. Teaching your own kids is definitely a challenge ( I've been through 4)!!! If you must, stick to the basics and try to keep it generic or the TKD instructor will be hearing "But my dad said.....", etc. Your son will probably "drive you crazy" all your life so get used to it!
  3. Shotokan Karate or JuJitsu complement your body shape/type well. Muay tai may also be a good choice.
  4. Handwashing is the key to staying healthy in an environment were there are lot of germs-especially kids classes at the dojo!! We always kept hand sanitizer at the instructors desk for those times when you got snot blown on you and couldn't leave the floor. Any regular physical activity and a healthy diet should keep your immune system in good shape and help bolster your resistance.
  5. Then why are you lurking around with us old farts???? Trying to learn our secrets, impressed with our wisdom, looking for tips on better living after 40 through chemicals?
  6. I have the same "fetish" as monkeygirl-ends of the belt MUST BE EVEN!!!!(which goes along with my peeve about students who can't seem to tie their belts properly, time after time after time after time after time....AAAGGGHHHH!!!!!)
  7. Try cardio-kickboxing. Great aerobics and works kicking and punching muscles too! I used to teach 3 classes a day...and never had to run (yuck!) or do any other conditioning to stay in top shape.
  8. broccoli, kale, tofu, enriched soy milks, tums (especially after those particularly spicey meals )!!
  9. FYI:Shotokan has different sounding kiaps for different situations in their kata. JuJitsu has silent kiaps at certain levels.
  10. You have no idea how easy it really is and how fearless one can be when they feel good all the time. I don't calculate my intake or worry that I don't get enough of anything except rest! It just like any other thing...you get used to it and your body tells you what it needs. And about that lamb thing....never under estimate your opponent !!
  11. Ephedrine taken over a long period of time can damage your heart so I wouldn't worry if you only took it a few times. I wouldn't get too worried until after the Holter and echo and discuss your concerns with the doctor then. It may be a simple rhythm problem, too much caffiene, not enough fluids, anxiety, etc. BTW, I think it is great that you have lost 70 lbs and it sounds like you are on the right track here. Keep us posted if you don't mind!
  12. Judging by your size I would say that you definitely need to eat more calories dude!!!!!
  13. Vegetarians eat no meat at all (yes chicken is considered a meat in the veggie world ) , some do not eat eggs but do eat dairy products. Pure vegetarians (vegans) eat absolutely no animal products whatseoever. I have been a vegetarian for many years, a vegan for 4...and my health has greatly improved since dropping dairy and eggs. Some lactose intolerant people actually have systemic intolerances (allergies) that cause not only bloating but joint swelling, headaches, etc. Protein is not a problem as long as you are educated and eat a balanced diet. Where do you think cows get all the protein and calcium they need to grow as big as they do and produce the milk they do.....grass and grains!!! Veggie diets are also high in omega 3 oils and other good fats which improves overall health and helps with flexibility, and complex carbs give you tremendous glycogen stores for those killer tests! Several veggie sites on the net have links to veggie athletic sites...even some vegan ones. Check them out...they have a lot of good info and support for those wanting to "try it out"!!!!
  14. Tang soo do was the name by which the Oh Do Kwan of Tae kwon do was known prior to the late 1950's/early 1960's. This kwan was brought to the Korean military by General Choi and other members of the Chung DO kwan. This history implies that the two were synonymous. There are a total of 9 kwans under the umbrella of TKD-all have similarities and differences and have borrowed heavily from each other.
  15. Delta is right. Tarsal bones are easily fractured so you may want to see a doctor. 3-5 days is a good guage of when an injury should start to improve...if longer you should have it checked out!
