Does anyone else do this? My karate school I attend (shotokan), the sensei is teaching me to rotate on the heal of my foot, instead of the balls...not for kicking, but for evasive foot work like stepping and pivoting...does anyone else do this particually? Is there any pros/cons as compared to the balls of the feet?

The Perception Of Effectiveness!!
chrissyp replied to sensei8's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Love this topic! I feel that everything, can be effective, it's just learning the how, when, and why to use it. some techniques aren't as cut as others. Some trial and error itself, beyond just being taught it to grasp some techniques. You have the right mindset, ALWAYS keep an open mind. As my coach would say "try to understand the method behind the madness" -
My senseis/ Kru have mostly been amazing. Teaching wise, i've got some of the best intstuction I've had, and i've trained a lot. Not just as a teacher, but they've became good friends. Now, i've trained at some places, I could "replace" do to crappy teaching and training.

Wow! :o Good luck in all your goals! Thank you sir! I should change winning the Muay Thai Classic, to just competing in it. I've dreamed of this tournament for the last 4 years, and never had a means to get there to fight.

I have never heard of this style! And this is almost exactly what i'm thinking, except i'd prefer no equipment other than a mouth piece and cup. I'd also have sweeps like in shotokan and add leg kicks, though leg kicks would not score any points. Do you know anything about this style other than the rules?
-
Pretty close to what I was thinking actually!

I was wondering, if there is a competition rules set out there of what I'd call "knock out point fighting" where its stop and go, like Shotokan point fighting, but you can win via KO? If anyone remembers my older post about "full contact Shotokan", I'm starting to think that this would be the best way to do it, as it keeps with the "one shot, one kill" philosophy of Shotokan.

have my first MMA fight in 3-4 years...win the 2015 Muay thai classic in iowa, drop 50lbs, do my first Karate tournament!

Thank you. I needed to hear that. Means a lot.

So, long story short, I ended up in a situation where I had to engage in self defense against being sucked punched by a drunken family member. I'm not proud of this, nor is that the point of this post. i'm posting this, because I learned through this conflict, what it means to be a martial artist, or something; I held back, I didn't hurt him like I could have, I picked and choose my shots. Even though I was very emotionally hurt, I had concern for his safety, and only did what was nessesary to end it, and avoided really hurting the guy. Before martial arts, I would have just hurt him...maybe it means I've learned compassion for my fellow man? I'm also been hard on myself, from a training POV, because it felt like I threw technique out the window at first, until I collected my cool, and then I could apply what I've learned. But is it also one of those things you can't really train for? How do you prepare for such a thing?

For me, its been my back. I've got pretty bad degenerative disk disease, which has caused significant weight gain not being able to work out, and i've not been able to fight for hte last 3 years because i've not properlly trained like I should... So that's my story... What's stopped you? Distance? Price of training? Injury?

I finally found a Kyokushin/ Mas Oyama karate school in my area, and I noticed they teach Kudo.... Can someone who's trained this style enlighten me on it? Is it more than just a MMA variant with a Kyokushin base and helmets? I'm gonna go to trial class, and i'm just wondering if I should expect anything different compared to any other MMA school/system.

OMG!! YAY ME!!!! -
I think Shotokan might actually be what tore my meniscus. It only gave me problems doing kata until it eventually popped.

Congrats to you good sir! You've always been full of GREAT advice, I had no idea you had such an extensive martial arts history. Most impressed! keep it up!

Just want to know who's done this and their experience...i'm planning on a trip to Thailand sometime next year hopefully, and i was wondering who's done something similar... Was the training worth it? What did you get the most out of it? Any advice or suggestions? I'm not doing this just for training, but as a way to broaden my horizons, and experience life, see the world.

Same thing every night, I dream about glory...just getting back in the ring and competing... it's been 3-4 long years out of the ring, I just turned 30, and I'm hell bent on achieving something before it's all said and done. But every night, I stay awake just dreaming and thinking about when it's gonna be my time.

So I was wondering...for those who are teachers of a particular style, how do you go about teaching your art in your school, and continuing to learn and advance in your own personal growth? Here's my situation. I've contemplated starting a martial arts club, something semi formal, but completely free where like minded stylest come to spar and exchange knowledge. This would essentially be my first step to becoming a teacher in muay thai one day. Meanwhile though, I still want to continue learning thai boxing under my instructor, but i'm afraid this would be a conflict of interest upon his part, and I don't wanna step on his toes/ barred from the gym....but at the same time, i'm not trying to make money of his knowledge...idk. Thoughts and advice?

Shotokan! Though I would LOVE to learn Enshin/ Ashihara (sp?) but there is ZERO Oyama karate of any sorts in my area

This is a hard one to answer I think...Confidence and sometimes be borderline cockyness. I'm gonna go with practice on this one, though having the confidence to use you ability can limit fear and make your skills applied more efficently, enough practice should also build the confidence to do so also. One leads into the other I think.

According to that website, they teach Krav Maga and Al Tracy's method of American Kenpo. You will find this to be vastly different from Shotokan, and while some of its techniques can be found in Shorin-Ryu, the way they move is different. That's just from my observations, though. Im sorry, wrong website! My bad! https://www.karatecincinnati.com I hate it backwards.
