  1. I only know a few shotokan kata (the Heian series, tekki shodan, chinte and bassai dai) but my favourite one I'm learning is empi. because of my background in shotokan/kyokai, my shito-ryu instructor is going to be teaching me the other advanced katas. I really look forward to seeing the differences in the two bassai's and jion.
  2. I've had a simmilar problem with this...You have to hate drywall. What I did was just take any peices I could find of the hole, use some wood glue and place it all back together (fill the rest with masking tape) This actually fooled my parents for a few months. keep in mind, this is for a white wall.
  3. Man, I'd have to say Capoeira! that just looks so COOL!!
  4. Yeah...I keep thinking that if I ever broke my arm, I'd continue to train in a cast, using just the good arm.
  5. Hey Kyle, I need to know of a good shotokan dojo I can go to in Edmonton, since I'm there usually a week in the summer. Does that Arashi do place do it?
  6. I'm just going to say, I'm a karate student that has been training for two years, and I'd have to agree that BJJ is more likely to severely beat a stand up art like karate than vice versa. To be able to defend against grappling, the karateka should cross train. I'm doing jiujutsu right now to supplement my training in karate. Now about grapplings flaws... Having been in a few street fights involving gangs, grappling is like commiting suicide. I mean absolutely no offense to any grapplers here, but if you are in a fight with 2 or more people, you simply have no time to get someone to the ground and apply a lock or a choke, when his buddy is right there ready to slap a bat in your head. If you've got the gift of speed and are strong enough to snap one guys arm and move on to the next guy, great! but this isn't the greatest strategy. You'll want to get out of there as fast as you can. Again, I'm not bashing grappling, if I was, then why the hell would I be doing it?
  7. Hmm, like bannock, I like the good ol' reverse punch. I'm currently trying to do a stepping gyaku tsuki, but perhaps I should work on my normal one first eh?
  8. Ath the local JKA dojo we all wear white. I don't understand the need to wear coloured uniforms. It is not neccessary. However, in my jiujutsu class, we must wear a black gi. (Oh, and I wear Mikado gi's)
  9. Hi, I'm new here and am a 4th kyu in shotokan, testing in a few days for me 3rd kyu. I've been reading the threads the past few days and would like to say I hope to be a frequent visitor. Any tips from other shotoscrubs for the Tekki Shodan Kata?
