help chosing a martial art
jmy77 replied to King of Fighters's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
You say you have 10 months. I don't know how old you are but why not get a job or start earning some money(somehow) to pay for it on your own. If you show your parents how much it means to you they may be willing to pay again AND it would help if you could take on some of the cost. If you like MT that much - work for it. -
Ko man, we have rules about style bashing. Care to back up your statement that Aikido is "utter rubbish" with some reasons why you feel this way? Dustin, The only way to figure what you like and are more comfortable with is to go to a few classes like most have said. It may turn out to be worth it for you to just remain with TJJ and suck up the commute.

Vale Tudo?
jmy77 replied to Anzie's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
Go to sherdog.com and download Vanderlei Silva's HL vid. He is a Vale Tudo Fighter. Vale Tudo, MMA and Shooto (Shootfighting) are all very similar. In my opinion they are the closest organized training styles to Bruce Lee's Jeet Kun Do philosphy as I have heard of. -
Anybody know where you can download an Andy Hug Highlight vid? I didn't see any on sherdog.

I agree some are easier to learn then others but all are limitless. Boxing, by itself only has a set number of punches but the combinations and other little things such double pumping your shoulder and a head fake or changing the direction of the strike in mid throw etc... these are where boxing is limitless there are as many sets of combinations as your can dream up...

Effectiveness of a martial art is dependent on the user. MA, and this includes boxing, is a tool. Boxing like any MA can be either extremely effetive or absolutely useless. It depends on the quality and desire of the person using it. Ghost, Though this thread is good - you are going to get a lot of the - your MA sux my MA is the best. a few months ago, when I joined this forum, it was a few MT guys absolutely bashing karate. That, thankfully has seemed to fade out. There are too many people who either fail to see or open their eyes enough to realize that anything can be effective. Boxing is a great art - how can it not be? It teaches the most basic techinque - Punching! If you can't punch you are in trouble. SO what it has holes - name one MA that doesn't. Even MAs that are hybrid and mixed are missing something somewhere, everything in this world can be improved upon. All MAs have their merits. This art bashing is garbage.

Dangerous Techniques
jmy77 replied to JohnnyS's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
If a person already has an arm bar on you... you're pretty much done. Like treebranch said - the object is to not get caught in the first place. -
You need to set parameters. Top Ten MA styles for sport? For Law Enforcement? For Self Defense? And also define what in the above catergory would make an art effective or ineffective.... Since I have only taken Wrestling and am now in Kenpo, I don't really feel I can help. You would have to find someone who has trained in many arts and can be objective in ranking them within your setof guidelines. Also there are some many styles and hybrid styles you would not be able to fairly include them all. Good Luck with your research.

Winning a streetfight, curious?
jmy77 replied to Kaju_influenced's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I agree - straight strikes: Stay inside, most people use the flailing limbs style of fighting, unless they are trained (and trained well) in some discipline. Never "let" them have the first strike - you don't wanna get caught. Be ruthless - there is no rule book to a street fight, unorthodox means are acceptable (ie. if some one puts you in a collar tie-up - i think that's what it is called in Greco wrestling- lick the side of their face takes their mind off of kicking your ass - even for a second - and exploit that let up by them.) Fight up close and personal - I'm talking inches away - fighting that close throws a lot of people off. Again these tactics may not work well against a trained fighter unless you are very good at in-close fighting. -
http://www.bullshido.com/article_read.asp?id=42 Someone wrote a review about bloosport - it funny to read but be warned this person thrashes the movie. Bloodsport was cool when I was younger - now that I am in martial arts some of these martial arts movies just seem funny now.

Karate is a general statement there are many types of karate: Shotokan, Goju, Kenpo/Kempo, Kyokushin and many others. The type of karate that is taught in TSK, as it was told to me, is a blend of Shotokan and Kyokushin.
-
A friend of my father-in-law was a second dan and instructor in TSK. He said it is a combination of Kyokushin, Shotokan various styles of grappling.

Cut the distance. Step into the kicker (Not the kick). Or the exact opposite step out (away from the kicker). If the kick is so fast that you cannot step into the kicker your not gonna get your arm in time either. And blocking with your elbow is not blocking with your forearm and/or wrist.

One of my favorite all time movies is Field of Dreams (I also like the movie about the Black Sox), but I have to say (even being a die hard Mets fan) 64* is awesome. I have yet to see a football film that can be watched without being so bad you have to laugh. Most Martial arts films are so unrealistic they border the comic book level and hockey - the best hockey movie is Slap Shot (btw - great flick). I am open to all your critismisms and suggestions. I also have to put in Caddy Shack - Happy Gilmore is good but Caddy Shack is teh Original.

Judo without Gi?
jmy77 replied to Venezolano's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
To expand on the question... Can't judo throws (with Gi) be applied to anyone wearing a jacket or shirt? Or are Judo throws that specific to person wearing something as strong as a gi? -
Chi, beneficial to the growth of a MA?
jmy77 replied to Kaju_influenced's topic in Health and Fitness
Does it help the Martial Arts grow Yes. Why? Because it is a positive aspect and that will attract people. Is it essential to the growth of MAs - in my humble opinion - No. -
I didn't read all of the posts because i am half in the bag right now (that means I'm Half Drunk to the unintitiated and underaged, c'mon it 2 am on a friday night and i just got home). Just keep this in mind. But in my dojo we are taught blocks in the begining and later we are taught that that blocks are actually strikes. So, yes it remains true - there are no initial offensive strikes in (my style of) kenpo - on the flip side of the same coin - even our defense is offense. ponder that. The single bone block concentrates force to a smaller surface area (one Bone) - hence can inflict much more damage than a double bone block which would absorb more force (two bones). Now, I ask would you actually ever try and block a kick with your arm? The leg is much more powerful and resilient then the arm - ask anyone who has tried to block a kick with their arm. I did that in a slow strike drill and my sensei explined that the shin kick would have shattered my arm. anyway before i start rambling (probably too late) this is my point: Do not waste your time blocking kicks with your arms - you arm will always give before someones leg. And if you throw a punch you are throwing it straight (even a hook or round house is straight compared to an outside block) and the block is coming from a perpendicular angle - there is not much reason to absord - more of a reason to strike - and the more focused the power the more devastaing the blow. With That, I bid you all Goood Night!

I saw a few comments about this in another thread so I did a quick search in google and came across this article. http://www.shotokankata.com/Articles/Jutsu.htm It's a good read. What do you think? What are your feelings about do and jutsu and how they relate?

try pyramiding your push ups... something like pyramid to 5 and back. 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 30 second rest between each set. after you do five take a minute rest and go back down, 5 - 4 - 3 - 2 - 1. If you accomplish that you just did 30 push ups. here is a website tha has some good exercises: http://www.trainforstrength.com/workouts.shtml
