Wing Chun Vs. Boxing
Stold replied to Stold's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
Wow...Look at all the good replies. I haven't been here in quite a while, so I'm a bit behind. I dont have a lotta time right now so I'll make this short. I've already overcome the hook problem. ^______^ Whenever I am in hook range I constantly apply the forward pressure that is intended when attacking. I'm not sure why it works, but it works. The forward pressure seems to stop the hooks. Maybe it's because straight punches really do beat curved ones. -
Well, the way I see it.... An experienced karateka's punch was clocked, using a strobe light, at roughly 14 meters/second. That converts to about 50 KPH. Combined with a smaller, sharper surface area of the first two knuckled and the weight of the karateka behind it, I'm fairly sure that a well aimed shot would require hospitalization. Of course there are other factors....The throat is one of the most well protected spots on the body by both location and reflex. Chances are you aren't going to land a dead on shot. If you feel threatened, do what you gotta do. Nuff said.

Hm, in every dojo I've ever attended had full contact sparring...Hell, my first dojo was a TKD dojo. When we sparred we'd put on chest protectors and go full contact with TKD kicks. I had huge ugly bruises on my arms from absorbing kicks from a 7th dan blackbelt.

I don't really travel to tampa at all. It's not that far, just no reason to.. I've always been interested in QiGong, especially after seeing those guys cut red brick with their hands. HAAA *break* Maybe you could just tell us what you would tell a beginner?

Now, I know half of the forum population is going to scream "YOU CANNOT BECOME A GOOD FIGHTER JUST BY DOING KATAS!" But then the other half will say "KATAS PERFECT TECHNIQUES AND ARE A CONSTANT NECESSITY!" Well, now I am curious. How much is too much. If a dojo devotes 4 out of 5 classes a week to Kata practice, are you really learning out to fight and defend yourself?

For what reasons do people fight?
Stold replied to WadoGuy's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Mr BoxerGrappler is right, everyone has something that lights their fuse. Mine tends to be people not taking me seriously... -
*raises hand* So, basically, demonstrational wushu practitioners should be the best fighters?
-
You are left with one arm to defend yourself with from frontal attacks without shifting stance.

Is Reality fighting a true martial art?
Stold replied to isshinryu kid's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
If you consider Martial Arts to be some sort of spiritual, beautiful flowery way of life crap, then no, most MMA fighters are not martial artists by your definition. But if you consider Martial Arts the way MOST were considered upon conception, then yes, they would be Martial Artists. Very few fighting methods in the world were developed for defending yourself or just enhancing your health. They were developed to fight, maim and kill. Or they were developed for sport...... I have gone full contact plenty of times with sparring partners, and...What do you know, I am still alive. Alll you need are some NHB gloves, closed cell head gear, some neck padding, a mouthguard and maybe a cup. Cup can get you careless about defending your jewels though, and I don't think anybody has ever died from being punched in the balls. Don't forget to pay attention when your opponent taps out either. -
I have punched to the third eye in combat...Works very well with a rolling backfist. Good stun attack that prepares for the chain punches. Jerry, I live in Tarpon Springs florida.... Chances are everybody feels their ki, especially when they are younger. I mean really young. I did, my friends did, we just didn't know what it was back then. Hell I am only 17 right now...But from what I understand the three main ways your body absorb Ki is through your feet, which flows through your body to the top of your head. Through your breath, which is stored in the dan tian. And the third is...Through your pores--Or something like that. I can feel the first two, but not the pore stuff...

Learning martial arts from a book is the same as learning a foreign language from tapes. It can work, but it takes a lot of discipline. If I were you, I would invest in a full length mirror before hand.

Well, if the best way for you to learn is to bash your limbs against hard objects karate kid style and see if you go "Ow" afterwards, by all means, knock yourself out! -

Correct me if I'm wrong, but couldn't you have been spared the trouble of a bruised wrist if an instructor had just pointed out the problem? I see what you're saying, but still, I don't see the why you have to learn by bashing your limbs against hard objects to see if it hurts or not. -

Perfecting a technique? I'd have to disagree. Unless you break a couple hundred boards a week. I'd say it's more of a demonstration of how effective your technique has become(if you consider bashing your limbs against hard objects an effective to way display your level of technique.) -

Wow Kick Chick. I admit, breaking is damn cool. But you think they learned to break those boards by breaking other boards? No way. Board breaking is good for looking cool and boosting ego. But like I've said before, I'd rather have my student's ego's boosted from kicking the shit out of their sparring partner. -
How to Start Trouble in a Martial Art Forum

I especially dislike the "BROOCE LEE WOULD KILL U ALL EASY WITH JEAT KOON DOE" posts. -
So far, every person that isn't twice my size who has attempted to knee me has been hip thrown to the ground and mounted. ^______^

How is breaking most important to you
Stold replied to SaiFightsMS's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
TKD sparring? Please, never compare TKD sparring to UFC again. I once put a man in a stretcher sparring with TKD rules. In a real fight, with TKD rules, I would be the one in the stretcher. Collar bone was probably a bad example as it's one of the easiest to break, especially with an axe kick. Of course, what happens when someone tries to axe kick you in a real fight?
