Instructor Who Lives An Alternate Lifestyle
madtanker replied to sensei8's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
As, 1) Parent... I would not worry about lifestyle except for the one on the storefront, and in the dojo. I want to know whether the instructor is professional, whether he or she was knowledgeable, and I would want to know that they conducted themselves with decorum 2) Student. I would want to learn the art for the reasons established. I would want ot be fit, confident, and knowledgeable in my art. I would not care if you were married, single, or in any of many alternative lifestyles. I would want to know that you could teach what I could learn. 3) Administrator. Of what, I have to ask? If it were a school or a department where alternative lifestyles were restricted, I would remind THEM that it was illegal to discriminate against it. I would want a teacher with knowledge to pass, and the ability to teach. If I were your Grandmaster and you were my sub teacher, or subordinate, then what would matter is what happens on the mat, not in the bedroom. In short, as long as the lifestyle itself is not interfering with the teaching, then I would not worry about the choices the person makes outside the dojo... unless they violated law, or morality (stealing even if you get away with it, lying and being corrupt)... I want the teacher to teach, regardless of their personal, legal, and (even in their eyes) ethical choices. I am not alternative; however, I have many friends that are, and it is like anything else... knowledge of the subject is power! -
Without the hips as a tool, one CAN fight from a sitting position, still using the ground as the focus of the power they have. Now, saying we were locked from the hips, a lot of lateral, as well as forward techniques would be terribly restricted. Takedowns would be less effective, and kicks (except from the floor or as a stiff body) would be all but inneffective. Hip rotation also allows one to change stances at will, whether for necessity to perform the next move, or to defend one's self. The hips could be worked around, but it would be tricky to say the least... But remember, 100 years ago people lived without computers, and 200 years ago, without telephones... Humans are built to adapt, survive, and overcome obstacles. It is our adaptability that saves us from our own selves and each other in the first place...

What an interesting afternoon!
madtanker replied to DoctorQui's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
That was outstanding! It is amazing how many people refuse to get involved, and it is scary some times when you do. I have almost gotten in trouble for a similar situation. I saw a man wrestling with another man in a K-Mart parking lot. When I drove up I asked if there was a problem, determined to call 911 from a distance; however, the larger of the two (the aggressor) was also winning the fight. I had to get out and took the man down with a wristlock and held him for the police. When they got there, they admonished me for 'taking the law into my own hands'; meanwhile the security officer and manager from K-Mart were thanking me. The man had a U-Haul full of merchandise, and was ready to hurt the security guard... Just be careful, sometimes no good deed goes unpunished... All the same, congrats, just be careful. -
Good luck and welcome!

Fang, remember me... I would love to pick your brain sometime... (I am beginnng Tang Soo Do myself)!

I am 38 and just starting myself (after suffering a bad back injury, my doctors wanted me to take something to strengthen my core, and pace myself doing so...). Good luck and be safe!

Oh, and when you do form the organization, let me know and if it works, I will study from you!

My teacher has learned to blend two martial arts and has given his a new name. I do not know if I can post his info here, but if I ask and can, I will follow it up with the right info; however, nobody knew a move until someone in a cave somewhere threw a punch. Get ambitious, and try to take the best of both, and create! I think if you have the drive to match the ambition, we will see the International 'Art Of Dave' Foundation in the near future!!

Hello and thanks for having me!

Hello! -
Hello everyone, I am not new to the martial arts, although I am new to formal study. I have had military hand-to-hand training, and some training from one of the trainers of the Atlanta Police Department while working in security enforcement (which is different from the average 'flashlight cop' in that we actually were a 'police' force (although unsworn) for the Atlanta Housing Authority). I am getting ready to study Tang Soo Do (which I find fascinating for two reasons) 1) The founder came to MA the same way that I did... roundabout and with little help until he found a way 2) The founder also set up a midnight blue belt as opposed to black (or rather in addition to it), to determine and spell out the significance that nobody is ever truly at the end of their journey... I am also going to incorporate Hapkido, which interests me because it lends more to my style of defense; holds, locks, and getting someone to a point where they can no longer pursue an assault. Hello again to everyone!

I never knew much about hapkido myself, but I have just learned some of the moves are things that I had to learn in LEO training, and some just look very intriguing. I am studying hapkido and Tang Soo Do myself, and am at the very beginning now... I am very excited to see where I can go! Welcome and good luck!

Welcome... I wish that my tiny lil' hometown had programs like that. Good luck on 3Dan and school!

The Intrepid AASM is also very interesting, although I can only imagine that modern carriers are larger than those from the 30's and 40's...

Dissapointment with grading results
madtanker replied to TheHighlander's topic in Share Your Testing, Grading, or Promotion
I know for my part I will remember that... I am just starting out myself, so I know that I cannot carry a bias if I am tested... We may feel that we are doing everything right, but some people have many years on us, and can see in a flash, something that we have been doing 'right' for a while... -
'Madtanker' comes from when I was driving a bulk (tanker) truck for a living. It was based on my free-thinking, and the fact that when my opinion is offered, and/or asked for, I give it with whatever vigor is necessary to get the point across... so hence, I was a Mad Tanker...lol.

I was going to do a monopoly theme for this halloween (2012). My roomate's dad looks JUST like Rich Uncle Pennybags from Monopoly (except that he smokes...lol) and my roomate is about to have a child so we were going to dress up as properties, and attach small buildings to our costumes, while dressing the baby as the 'dog' complete with silver outfit, and have 'dad' dress up in a tuxedo and a monacle.

Scrubs, NCIS (Naval Criminal Investigative Service) American Dad! Family Guy Futurama (especially since they now have new ones!!!) Jeopardy! Bully Beatdown (but 'Mayhem' needs to get it together after that tragic loss to Michael Bisping) Psych The Weather Channel... (My roomate made me put that one on here!!!) and I will watch a few others... but in reality, I am trying to cut back on TV.

A Very Bad Idea (Shoplifter Castrated By Lobster.
madtanker replied to Naked Snake's topic in General Chat
Now that is one way to prevent criminals from creating MORE criminals...lol. Another way to put it, he definitely saved thousands keeping his bloodline from infecting the world... or finally... If he was dumb enough to stick a LOBSTER down his pants, do we WANT him breeding???
