  1. Very well done Fang! Man, I really need to make a video, but I really want to wait until I get my white jacket and embroidered belt... bah, we'll see, maybe I'll just do one real quick before they arrive.
  2. Wow, that's kind of extremist. You should never jeopardize your job for a martial art, especially if you like it. Kuma said it the best
  3. They were asking a hypothetical question. I would teach them too. As long as they are respectable and not disruptive, of course. I would also ask them to wear a rank appropriate for their skill level. If they moved like white belts, that's the rank I would give them.
  4. Well said and thanks for the input. Yeah, I think the guys I grappled with were Japanese Jujutsu. That could explain why we were rather equal in ground fighting.
  5. 18-1 actually. His only defeat was by disqualification. At leas that's what the wiki page says.
  6. You can also try light sneakers. That's what I use when I train outdoors.
  7. This is not me, obviously, but this is the first one we get - I'll make a video once my embroidered belt arrives.
  8. Holy crap Zoodles! You are a wealth of knowledge!
  9. Welcome! That camp should be a blast! Have fun!
  10. Very well said and points taken! I might give it a try if I can justify spending the money on it. I've just found out that one of the BJJ places I contacted have a Judo instructor who is currently at the Olympics: Alexandre Edmon It would be awesome to train with an Olympic athlete. I'm not dismissing BJJ yet. It is a powerful style and, as you said, will compliment my Kempo. Thanks for all the tips, I really do appreciate it
  11. It's not based on any real facts. Obviously it is a martial art. Why I think it's lame? It just never grabbed me. Never enjoyed watching it. Never enjoyed taking part in it. Just stupid personal bias towards it, which I know is unjust to the sport. It's like music, I guess. Some like one style, some hate another.
  12. You may think so now, but when you train with an instructor, I think you'll find that you hadn't taught yourself anything at all.
  13. Very similar to mine (but seeing you're doing Chinese Kempo Karate, then we're probably VERY similar.) We have white gi until purple, black after that. Black belts get white top, black pants. 3rd dan is black top, white pants, 4th dan is red top, 7th dan is purple top.
  14. Thats the annoying thing, yes I do all the time as well attend training 3-4 times per week! Its just recently, being at such an advanced point, that my technique seems to be going off! Most of the time I can notice my own mistakes and correct them. Its when I get pulled up and the whole class has to start again because of me, it just shatters my concentration and focus and I find it really really hard to get it back in that session! I suppose, we are our own worst critics! If it makes you feel better, I have to break 7 years of instinctual movements to adjust them to a new dojo. Little things in DM's, Katas, Pinans, and a whole new set of Kempos and Knife and Club techniques.
  15. Here's a badass that is never really considered a badass - Jean-Claude Van Damme - the muscles from Brussels. He's got an impressive career before becoming a movie star. 18-9 career in full contact Karate/Kickboxing. 44-4 career in light-semi contact karate. European Champion a bunch of times. Plus he's slated to fight Somluk Kamsing in December of this year. Should be fairly interesting
  16. We have spear katas in Shaolin Kempo. They are more Kung-fu-ey because of their origins, but are a blast to watch. Here's one
  17. Impeccably said. Every art is worthy of respect... well... everything except Ameri-do-te. That style is just TOO DEADLY.
  18. I also agree. Tell your instructor.
  19. I have gone up against good grapplers. Sometimes they beat me, sometimes I beat them. I think I might just not be a grappler. It doesn't feel natural to me. My wife will be joining me in Aikido, and I will continue towards my 2nd Dan in Kempo. I'll never stop Kempo, that style. Thanks for all your input guys!
  20. Learned a new black belt technique today. It's a Kempo based on the Monkey style. Very very very cool. Fast, intricate, but devastating. LOVE IT!
  21. I'll just quickly chime in to reinforce what everyone has said... Don't try to self-teach yourself any martial art. It's a bad idea.
