Ive been reading a lot lately about how essential it is to learn some type of ground fighting because "nearly all fights end up on the ground". Now Ive done Judo a bit and loved it, Im not trashing Jui Jitsu, but I think that in the street you would never take the fight to ground, and if you got knocked down the object would be to get to your feet as quick as humanly possible whilst not getting the you-know-what kicked out of you. Luckily I have never taken this type of kicking, unfortunatly friends of mine have.In all cases they were already outnumbered. Getting up on their feet, keeping moving and making sure they didnt go down again saved them, and stand up fighting skills would have helped. I realise there is a lot more to Jiu Jitsu and Judo than groundwork. What do you people think?

I did judo with my younger brother for a few years at a local club, it was great fun, never got to compete though, at that age I was a bit light I think. Learning to dive roll is up there with the most important skills I have ever learnt. Saved my neck (and other bits) in a motercycle accident a year ago. I got to orange belt and then left a did a bit of Katate. Judo ended up being better. -
Hi Owthathurts! Im not sure about the kick backwards thing, I started doing these stretches because I was waking up with a sore back and neck, pulling musles in my sleep somehow, and also hurting myself after using weights. I havnt had any problems since, I highly recommend yoga. It will increase range of movement gradually so I guess it will help in kicking, and leaning backwards, (is that for dodging and weaving?) that will improve as well.

Kung Fu styles..

Ive seen mention of San Shou, from what I gather it is a Kung Fu style. What would I expect from learning this? The thing I most want to do is spar under some good teachers, I currently do Muay Thai. How would that and San Shou go together for cross training? Are there any/many forms in San Shou? -
Say there was a theoretical guy and a girl who were the same weight, height, and had the same strength, speed, flexibility, etc. training, so that physically they were as close to an even match as possible. The quailites that one would need to beat the other now become intellectual, the "smartest" fighter is going to win. Now imagine that she's had a bad day. Just kidding!!

I just thought that this was a General Karate and Martial Arts Discussion. When I said "no offence" thats exactly what I meant. Dont get me wrong, chivalry is a great quality, but in a martial arts context, I think it is acceptable to overlook it for the purposes of discussion. I have no interest at all in attacking you or anyone here, with all due respect. In fact, I think you just need a hug!

I think that yoga is the best flexibility exercise I have ever seen. I do a simple "salute to the sun" (or surya namaskars if you want to do a search for it) slowly about 3-4 times and have improved noticeably. One called the dog pose, (my dog does this every day without fail!!) is an overall stretch for shoulders, upper back and heels. It starts from a pushup position and you just stick your ass up in the air, straight legs, make your body into an inverted V. Hold it and breathe normally. It will take a while before your feet will be flat on the floor. The cobra, or bhujangasana, is lying on your stomach, tops of feet on the floor, hands under shoulders and push your upper body off the floor. The hips should stay on the floor. Lean back as much as you can (be gentle!) and look up at the roof. Dont hunch the shoulders.Breathe. Its a great stretch. I swear by it. Keep in mind I am an amatuer, and it would pay to find more information elsewhere if you plan to follow this up. After all, you hardly know me!!

Backyard Sparring

Had a night of sparring for the first time tonight at Muay Thai, now Ive got a good idea of what gear I need. I cant imagine why anyone wants to roll bottles on their shins when all they need is light sparring, block a few kicks and you can feel it alright! So shin pads are close to the top of the list with gloves. There was a tall guy who liked to kick, some frount kicks were getting a bit low, he didnt keep his guard up very well Ill try to punch him next time. I got a few hits on my nose from the more experianced guys, I think they were going easy as well!! I think with some practice Ill be pretty damn good!! Thank for the advice guys -

You've probably had the experience of queuing in the bank for a few minutes, but it seems like ages. Time hasn't slowed down, but your perception of time has. I simply teach some sports people how to slow down time in their mind so they can move faster in the real world. That way they have more time to anticipate their opponent, hit the ball, or just make a decision. The racing drive Jackie Stewart once said that he only ever drove fast twice in his life and both times it scared him. Of course, at the end of the day, hypnosis is no substitute for discipline, education and taught training in all areas. All hypnosis can do is help any sportsman achieve his very best. It can help put somebody into the best state of mind for an event and if you add this to the best state of body it is an overpowering combination. Of course it doesn't go down well with everyone. Chris Eubank called for an inquiry into the use of hypnosis in boxing after losing his title to Steve Collins, who had admitted a hypnotist had helped him in the run up to the fight. Eubank called hypnosis legal cheating, but the governing board of boxing thought differently and after an investigation they gave it the green light. How about the big low kicks they do? Obviously they hurt like hell, and after a while the leg cant be used, but what is physically happening to the leg, and where exactly do they aim? -
Ever since Ive found internat, watching tv just annoys me. Im on the net every evening almost, and I do have a life as well! And there are a few of us who aren't American, but if it was sparring partners you wanted, or maybe you were having a party, well Im still pretty far away!!

Hey how do i make my shins harder and what kinds of medicine

Do hundreds or even thousands of kicks on a heavy bag or pads. That way you develop power, speed, endurance and balance while your shins get tough. Not sure about the medicine though, once I went to a Kung Fu class with a guy I worked with, we did some palm toughening work, basically just get someone to give big killer slaps on your palms, and after the class had some ointment to put on, there were two types, one was penetrating, for deeper bruising, the other was more for skin. It went something like that it was ages ago, sorry! -

I think I'de better have at least a no groin hits rule! Do you think head protection is a must, how many of you people use it? Bear in mind that the guys interested that Ive talked to mostly have little or no martial arts formal training, so Im expecting some unorthodox styles! Personally Ide like to keep it light to develop timing and correct technique, and work on power after that. I appreciate the comments, keep 'em coming! -

I would like to comment on a bit of culture I saw on TV the other night, is was a WWF fight, witch has anough of a following in NZ to be aired fairly regularly. It started with a couple of lads, not sure of names, (I dont usually watch it I was channel surfing) doing the "Im gonna kick you into next week" etc etc, when one guy gave his mates ringside the nod, and 3 of them jumped in the ring, put the guy on the floor and kicked and stomped his head and body for a while. The crowd loved it, thats what they paid to see. We all know thats it a load of bollox, some of us know that a 3 on 1 stomping can kill someone. How many kids (The target audience) know what can kill a man? Is there an age you reach where you realise the behaviour of these role models will have fatel and/or legal consequences if preformed in real life? How many of you people know kids that have imitated WWF moves in the playground? My opinion: I would never want my children to watch this entertainment. Instead, I would encourage them to learn martial arts, where they would learn respect for people and life, controll over thier emotions, and humility. They would learn that voilence is a last resort, to protect themself and the innocent, and in the ring there are rules that govern conduct of fighters.(See "Tenants of TaoKwon Do" in TDK thread) Shame, shame on you WWF!! Thai Boxing

The biggest difference's between the Karate and the Muay Thai that Ive been taught are: Muay Thai roundhouse kicks dont "snap" at the target, they really drive or plow through it, striking with the shin instead of the foot. A Thai kick, if it misses, by its nature will spin your body 360 degrees, momenterily your back is exposed to your opponant. Sometimes followed by a backfist on the way round. Frount kicks are also less snap, more push. Punches are more boxing style, jabs, uppercuts and crosses, hands are protecting the chin all the time, never coming from around the hips. Stance is about a 50/50 wieght dist., with your strong leg slightly behind, no low stances with a straight leg. I know you asked about kickboxing, but oh well!! And keep in mind Im no expert just a student, Im sure if Im wrong Ill be corrected pretty quick! -
Anyone mind if I boast about my new belt for a while? Well it was hard work but I tell ya it was worth it. Yeah its a jungle and only the tough survive. Ide like to thank everyone. My plans for the future? Im glad you asked. Ill be focusing on the next belt. You'll be seeing quite a bit more of me in the future. I think it'll be OK, its not untill I get closer to black belt I have to show a bit more humility!!
