  1. Hey all, I'm getting bored of doing my regular workouts and there are certain Bodyweight movements id like to get the hang of, specifically handstand Pushups. Anyway, there's an outdoor fitness park near me and I'd like to try Bodyweight training only for a little while. I was thinking I'd organize each workout with 2 leg exercises, 2 back exercises, 2 Chest exercises, 1 Abdominal Circuit and 1 Shoulder Exercise, with dynamic warm up and static stretching for a cool down. Everything would consist of 3 sets, with one minute of rest between sets. I already have a list of leg exercises, back exercises, chest exercises, abdominal variation and shoulder exercises, each ordered from easiest to hardest. I figured lots of variation would be best with a calisthenic workout I'd just pick and choose off the lists each workout. If anyone has any suggestions or is willing to critique my workout, I would really appreciate it! Thank you in advance.
  2. Kanku65 same here!! I'm so easily entertained by martial arts movies. I'd like to see more that use Okinawan Karate accurately because it's fun seeing something that I know, or seeing something I just recently learned put into action on a movie screen. However, I enjoy Kung fu movies for the same reasons. I can keep a completely open mind to what theyre doing.

  4. So I love both Matsubayashi Shorin Ryu and Gracie Jiu Jitsu. There's a gym near me that teaches TaiJitsu Karate (no kata, all Kumite practice) and Jiu Jitsu. My Sensei of Shorin Ryu lives in another state, so testing with him is rare and I have to practice by myself. My plan, when I get through usmc boot camp and mtb was to sign up at this place, continue jiu Jitsu and practice shorin ryu on my own with testing every year or two. However, I love stand up fighting as well. I'm wondering if I sign up for the Taijitsu as well, would it effect my shorin ryu at all? Any and all advice is greatly appreciated.
  5. I've heard that Shoshin Nagamine has said that Shima, or Okinawan Sumo, came from tegumi. For those that practice Karate, you've probably heard of Tegumi. I just discovered Shima and I'm so interested for some reason. Does anyone have any info on this? Does anyone know if this art would be beneficial to Karate or my style of Matsubayashi Ryu? How does it compare to Judo? Thanks in advance!
  6. My Sensei always tells us to work on control with our kicks. I'd work on setting up a kick to the head or wherever, kick fast and just tap your opponent and return. Try to make it look like you could have dropped him, but you chose to tap and return to your guard instead.

  8. When I was doing Muay Thai, my kru would have us drop down and do leg raises at random times. For every rep, our partner would have to smack our Abs with a thai pad. It felt like it was knocking the wind out of me! Eventually my body adapted to it and I got stronger. So I wouldn't recommend targeting areas like your liver... Getting hit there can really hurt you long term. You can have someone do lots of punches on your Abs really fast but not as hard (it'll hurt eventually anyway). But I really love what my Kru did. Lots of different abdominal exercises!

  11. I love doing this! I leave my house feeling like I just left my dojo, and that's always a great feeling. I'll usually practice all the kata I know 2-3 times and practice some Kihon.

  14. Kata is definitely my favorite part of Karate. My Sensei Is very big on what your second paragraph explains. Just doing Kata alone is my favorite activity. I'll exhaust myself doing them before even thinking of playing video games like the rest of my friends. By the way. I'm quoting you: "If you study Kata seriously you will discover within it a wealth of techniques, theory, and knowledge."
  15. So for Fukyugata Ichi and Ni, I end the Kata with my feet about where they were when I began. For Pinan Shodan, I usually end up a little more to the left. And for Pinan Nidan, I usually end up a little to the right. A fellow Karateka and I were going over Pinan Nidan and he said my feet should be a little more spread apart (bigger steps) when in my natural stance. This did help, but I fear there could be something else, if anyone has any pointers for me? As for Pinan Shodan, I have no clue. Any pointers or suggestions would be awesome! Thank you.
  16. Thanks a lot everyone! I really appreciate all of your inputs and advice. I'll definitely pick a few tournaments each year and try to use periodical ion for my training. As for the Kata/Kumite, I'll pretty much train for Kumite and use Kata as my warm up and cool down for every workout. I can also set aside time in the dojo or another time of day focus entirely on Kata. Id train in Karate 24/7 if it was humanly possible! Thanks again.
  17. DWx that's a great idea with the hat! It's so simple yet so great lol. I feel as though my workouts for the ret of my life will be put together just like that. Wayneshin, that's very true as well! Just because I jumped real far, it doesn't mean the rep is over. The landing is most definitely just as important. Thanks for all the help guys
  18. What are some thoughts on circuit training? Typically, I first think of randy coutures barbell grappling circuit. Doing one exercise after another without dropping your barbell/dumbells/Kettlebells. I also love it!
  19. Back when I did crossfit, I had a one on one with my coach one night. I walk into the middle of the gym where she's standing, and she says "alright, give me 50 Burpees." I didn't think she was serious, as I consider Burpees to be a workout and not a warm up. So I did them, it sucked, and then I did the rest of my warm up before doing my strength session and the WOD. Burpees are everyone's weakness.

  22. Hey everyone! Because I'm in such a good mood, I have to say this first: tonight was my first night back at my dojo in 2 years! It felt so great. Anyway, I was planning some workouts because that's just what I do, and I had an "off season" workout that keeps me in shape, focuses on strength, etc. I do have everything organized for a workout during competition season, if there even is one. Or, if there really isnt, would it just be better to train for one tournament at a time, like 2 months prior? With that said, if there tends to be a chain of tournaments within 2 months of each other (no more), I'd consider that a competition season Thanks in advance!
  23. Thanks a lot! And What I usually do are Plyometric circuits. For example: - 20 squat jumps - 10 Chinups - 20 vertical jumps - 10 pike Pushups - 20 8 count bodybuilders - 20 Clap Ups Anything that isn't explosive, I just added to work more muscle groups. I tried making other routines based on the harder/easier variations of each exercise. For example, 2 levels down from this routine, squat jumps would be regular air squats. Basically, I'm trying to make as many workouts as I can that are similar to this one, but different enough so that I won't just be doing the same thing every time I go to workout! I'd really rather stick to bodyweight exercises for easy access!
