How do you deal w/ disabled People
TKDLadyInSC replied to tkdgirl30616's topic in Instructors and School Owners
karatekid1975 We have a student who does the same thing with forms. He can walk, but can't kick due to total hip replacement. I had knee surgery in June, and still have lots of trouble with it. Currently it takes about 2 weeks to recover from 1 class, so i am on a hiatus from class right now. It annoys me. -
How do you deal w/ disabled People
TKDLadyInSC replied to tkdgirl30616's topic in Instructors and School Owners
tkdgirl30616 Did you attend the seminar on ADHD Mr. Wiley Robinson gave at Black Belt Camp this summer? He focused on that. He has a lot of medical knowledge on it and has it. If you missed the seminar, ask Mr. Newton about it, they were going to make a print version of it available to the instructors. As far as disabilities, do bad knees count? -
Look at them very sympathetically and say "I'm sorry". They will usually ask, "What for?". You respond "This". Then knock them around. I even had my instructor grinning when I did this to a friend of mine.

washing of dobok
TKDLadyInSC replied to NightShade_UK's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Very few questions are dumb, and this is not a dumb one. 1. wash uniform after every workout 2. wash uniform in cold water (prevents shrinking) 3. do not dry in the dryer 4. do not use chlorine bleach (will make yellow) 5. pretreat problem spots (under arms) Number 5 is important. Sweat and deodorant tend to collect here (especially for guys). By the time you see the stain, it's too late to fix. There are pretreaters in stores made just for sweat/deodorant stains, use them. Hope this is helpful! -

Why do forms/katas begin with left movements?
TKDLadyInSC replied to TKDLadyInSC's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Yes, I have. Perhaps this shows we should use our art in defense, not to dominate. Never, I am a sponge. More info and opinions please. I don't think I am going to find a black & white answer, but with many other people's thoughts, I can form my own opinion. We do occasionally practise forms on the opposite side, but most of our forms up to black belt are symmetrical. -
Any time Cyberclown. This is why I learn something from everyone I train with; old, young, large, small, white belt or black belt. Every person has something to teach me, and I love to learn.

Noticed a pattern the other day. Up to my current rank, all the forms I have learned have begun with a movement to the left or with the left hand or foot. Asked my Instructor, and instead of just telling me the answer, he told me to research it... learn more that way. Searched the web, best I could find is the superstition that it's lucky to enter a house left foot first, and in Islam, you are supposed to enter the house of worship left foot first. Anybody have any ideas?

Being overweight, I can tell you, it's not a matter of stiffness. It's a matter of fat. The fat is between your chest and your legs. With your legs together and straight in front of you, you feel no stretch. It's just squishing fat. The muscles are no where near their maximum flexibility. So, I have found stretches on the floor best done legs out in a V, for me .

WHat do feel is a Good Contract ?
TKDLadyInSC replied to Shihan's topic in Instructors and School Owners
No, the contract is paid on a month to month basis. If you are unable to continue for one of the allowed reasons, then your payments stop then. I guess if you paid in full before the contract year and this happened, then it would be. -
WHat do feel is a Good Contract ?
TKDLadyInSC replied to Shihan's topic in Instructors and School Owners
My instructor offers an 8 week introductory offer that includes 1 uniform. This lets them get the feel for it and see if it's something they want to do. Then if it's for you, you sign a one year or two year contract. The contract can be broken for medical reasons or if you move. -
Ahhh. Should you have the blueberry pancakes, the strawberry pancakes or the plain pancakes. As with food, it's a personal decision. What are you looking to gain from the martial art? What are your goals? How old are you? Do you want a martial sport (one that leans towards competition) or a martial art (one that tends to place more emphasis on the history and tradition)? Personally being a Taekwondo artist, I couldn't think of picking another style now . But answer these questions and we may be able to better help you. And personally, I like blueberry pancakes .

The best way to teach little kids?
TKDLadyInSC replied to Black Dragon's topic in Instructors and School Owners
Two Word: Coat Hooks Put coat hooks on the wall around the school. At the beginning of class hang all the children on a hook by their belt. Take them down one at a time and work with them, then put them back up there and take another one. Seriously, I also struggle with this. -
I couldn't agree more. It's not that I don't value relationships. It's the opposite. In my opinion, you should value your relationship with your instructor too much to risk losing it to hormones. But, if you really think it's right, give up your training. Stop studying and date. Then you would be just two people dating, not an instructor and student dating. Way down the road if you get married, have a few future blackbelts running around , and want to train again it would not be as risque.

Finally!!! I'm not the only one who has that problem . Couple of ideas: Use a wall. Sit on the floor, feet towards the wall, with your legs out in a V. Keep scooting closer to the wall, allowing the wall to push your legs wider. Use a partner. #1 Grab on to a bar, counter or back of a chair. Have your partner squat down. Get into a side kick position with your ankle resting on your partner's shoulder. Have them slowly rise until you are at your limit. Hold it for 20 seconds. Then squeeze down for 20 seconds like you are trying to push them to the floor. The relax at that height for 20 seconds. That is one. Then have them slowly go a little higher. You let them know where to stop. Repeat. Do this for 3-5 minutes. #2 Sit on the floor facing your partner, both of your legs out in a V. Your partner will put their feet on the inside of your calves. They will grab your arms and pull you forward. Do this for 3-5 minutes. If you do this 3-4 times a week, should improve a lot. Buy a commercial stretcher. You can get a good one for about $200.00. The one I want is $299.00. This isn't cheap, but if you don't have someone who can stretch with you on a regular basis, it would be a wise investment.

Many running shoes have a thicker sole. That is the good thing about martial art shoes. The sole is very thin and the shoe completely conforms to the foot. I also prefer the low profile of the martial art shoe. Most of the wrestling shoes are hi-tops. They provide excellent ankle support, but can inhibit ankle flex in certain moves. We don't wear MA shoes in class. We have jigsaw mats. But, when we go to camp and are working out outside, they are great. No stickers or thorns . I finally wore out my Adidas 2000. Just ordered Adidas's new one. http://www.centuryfitness.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10051&storeId=10051&productId=11805&langId=-1&categoryId=10007&parent_category_rn=13501 I am sure the less expensive ones work just as well, but these look good.

Many paints can cause the material to break down. This could make the gear unsafe. As far as the warrior gear, I like the design, think it is cool. I asked my instructor if we would eventually change to that. He likes the look, but said he would not change to it because the back part is cut high. It leaves the base of the head exposed. A little less safe than the traditional Macho gear that comes lower, so I abide by his decision. Your instructor may want you to have the same gear as everyone else for a similar reason, Or for uniformity.

If it does it every time you go through that motion, I would see a doctor. An occasional popping can be similar to cracking your knuckles. My hips will do it usually once a day if i'm kicking, so when i'm warming up and stretching before class I usually go ahead and get it to pop. If it is persistent or accompanied by pain I would recommend getting it checked. Better safe than sorry.

I was taught that showing the top of the head is considered disrespectful in Korean culture which is why we look at the person we are bowing to.

Unconventional breaks
TKDLadyInSC replied to Black Dragon's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Upset Ridge Hand. When I did it, a 3rd degree commented that he would have to try that. -
Do you want to continue your studies? If so, no. If she says no, things will be akward. More than likely you will end up quitting. If she says yes, it is very hard to keep the two relationships (teacher/student,girlfriend/boyfriend) seperate. Any highs or lows in the relationship will affect training.
