  1. I think you've got to instill the self discipline and desire in students from day one, focus on the attitudes as much as the technique - building a black belt. The more parents are involved and interested in their childs progress the better. But you've got to trust the child to do it themselves but pre-frame parents and students whats required and what they need to do in terms of home practice and prepare for gradings.
  2. First drillls that isolate skills i.e - Specific Attack and Counter. Then integrate with other attacks and counters in freeplay. Building to limited sparring to the body only.
  3. Yes the upside down method more of a looping mexican hook. I think the big difference in the hook is the way people use their hips from example the Kronk gym really go for double/triple hooks like my good friend Lance Lewis. One of my coaches Jarrod old school british boxing would throw the hook really short without his elbow leaving his side and forearm very close to his chest. Perfect when you use head movement to get close and land that sort devastating shot! I love watching the different style and the way people throw techniques!
  4. Yes Hagler was mine too...he was a better boxing than people gave him credit but a very tough man! Roy Jones probably the most gifted of all time.
  5. The person who applies more constant forward pressure wins in a real right so the puncher wins in most cases as counter punching in a real fight is difficult when you take away the room required to counter.
  6. Based on mma most practice muay thai as their all round striking art. We've seen a few elite fighters get an even bigger edge with pro boxing skills. Dos Santos and GSP. I think today is about strengths and weaknesses as oppose to styles. Talking away the opponents strenghts...like Dos Santos did we Carwin beating him up with a superior jab. But this is at elite level.
  7. I injured my wrist and it took me a year its still weak for uppercuts and hooks. I went to several physio's - it mostly came down to stretching exercises. and not building strength like many suggested. Its worth getting proper advice these things can linger around forever if you don't get the right treatment and recovery.
  8. Agreed Kickboxing is a combination of Karate and Boxing. Kickboxing employ side kicks. Muay Thai don't but allow Knees & Elbows and low kicks within certain rules.
  9. You'll lose more weight with weight training or resistance training this speed the fat burning process much faster than cardio. You could do: 1 cardio - 1 weight session and 1 circuit. Lee
  10. Boxing is an awesome workout - you'll also be bringing serious heat to your TKD bouts with these skills. I would add a circuit or some weights in between this will give you better balance and faster progress in buring fat and building lean muscle.
  11. I think you'll see a big surge in boxing skills in the next 12 months. Look at Dos Santos and GSP destroyed their last opponents with better boxing skills.
  12. Black belt is really only important to people that want to achieve it, its a yard stick that motivates them. 3-4 years in most systems is adequate with good coaching. Black Belt is the beginning of someone training not the end as in many cases. Its the person behind the belt that counts as they say!
