  1. If your hitting a heavy bag without gloves, especially often your just going to damage your hands. I understand the conditioning reason, reality need to practive this way. I just don't think its great for long term well being.
  2. I was maybe 15 testing for my Brown Belt and got paired with a man to sparr - he didn't beat me so bad I was tired and probably quite emotional because of this afterwards. A year or so later I think I got my own back on more than one occasion! Oh got my nose busted in a training session sparring with a guy maybe 3 stones heavier.
  3. Fear from respect is good - fear from intimidation is not. I always hate practioners that don't use control when sparring with a lesser opponent. Unless the lesser person get a little too excited and needs a little reminder!
  4. I don't believe this is a martial art. Free running is a little like xma in that it can be seen as good for demo's. Unless someon uses flips to land on their opponents, bounce off walls and into someone. Wait Jackie Chan already does this!

  7. I would say you can get pretty good at something training a couple of times a week for 18-24 months - then you can move onto something else - but you'll need to train your previous stuff at least 1-2 per week to maintain your level.
  8. Yep you'd want to either train all 3 together for at least 18 months - 24 months. Or train one - 3 times per week then reduce to two after 6 months and add a second system and so on. You can't learn much in a few months and you will not retain the skills.

The internet has become very important for attracting new students, because it's cheap and everyone uses the net to find stuff these days....the problem is most ma sites are not set up to do the job their designed for - to create new students. Many websites are just a school brochures and give too much information and leave a potential student with too many decisions instead of getting them to pick up the phone and make an appointment and visit the school. Which as a school owners is what you want - you cant sell what you do online but you can convince someone just enough that you are what they are looking for and then convince them to come in. A nice free trial form on your landing page and learning seo will do wonders.

  11. Yes if you don't have forward pressure you must cover, and regain the initiative as quickly as possible. In sport this is possible or open space but in a bar or crowded area its not going to be so effective being the counter puncher.

  13. Best thing is to find who is the best and to achieve the standard you want - learn from them and copy what they do to achieve similiar results! Training, how they think, eat - everything.
  14. I don't think you can add new techniques but you can improve your strategy and sparring. Keep changing your approach until you get the right results. See how your opponent reacts each time and then adjust. In one month to go lots of sparring - ease up the week of the fight. Start focusing on visualisation maybe get a book on training your mind.
  15. Some good examples of isolating skills their yamesu. Another good one is fighting open stance v close stance. and mixing it up. This type of drill shows a few tweaks to your strategy can completely take away someones strengths.
  16. A good rule of thumb for carbs is to eat no more than the palm of your hand thay way you'll burn it off and not store and turn it to fat. There is allot of free stuff online or programs - I did the Bill Phillips "Body For Life" book program years ago and got major ripped with it. Its knowledge and staying disciplined to it!

  18. Yoga is awesome and I believe essential for martial artists to cross train - strength and flexibility, balance and mind training rolled into one. If you have had injuries or want to retain your skills and mobility later in life Yoga will help you - I see people in my class in their 60-70s and they are the fittest for their age I have ever seen. Try it!
  19. Agreed Tay is a more comfortable counter fighter but attacks with reall skill when required. He wins is the easiest way which isn't always the most entertaining. I think Roy Jones jnr would be a comparison in boxing - people lost interested because he won too easily.
  20. my job does and has for 15 years - being a pro instructor! Keeping your learn on is essential for remaining passionate about the arts!
  21. Always teach using public priase private reprimand - never infront of a class this is small.
  22. Training with people who have allot of experience are the best to seek out. As they say experience is life best teachers. Your right fighters rarely make good coaches - too much ego etc. I have recently been in the company of Lance Lewis, Bob Sykes and John Dawson proper martial combat men who have over 100 years between them you can tell they have the experience and mastered the skills they practice. Defining who is the best for you is better.
  23. allot spend way too much time of the technique without developing the distance and timing. You don't see a tennis player practicing in front of a mirror for hours. You can teach the technique for 2 mins and have people training the skills from the get go - like hitting a tennis ball. The issue is the partner - do they have control of force and speed required to develop a skill. They practive live and thats what you need motion, resistance (slowly built up) and timing.
  24. The backfist lends itself to being side on and pushing off covering more ground for points fighting. I also think you can perform the back fist faster to and its a little harder to see coming from the side. You can land a jab with much more force - one of the 4 types of jab is the "ram" afterall. Just got back into points fighting last 3 weeks - my backfist was a big weapon for me - although I present my mind if faster than my body!
