  1. One point I haven't seen mentioned (unless I've missed it - sorry) skill with a partner. It's all well and good performing techniques solo. It's a whole different ball game with a partner !

But that isn't the central issue. He has not gone through the training process of that school, that teacher. How can he ask for validation from them ?

  2. We have recently been discussing toe kicks (a small-surface strike) here at KF, and then someone asked me, on YouTube, about another small-surface strike (the extended-single-knuckle fist). It seems to be the in-thing right now! I'm curious as to what types of small-surface strikes you all practice/use, outside of the toe kick, and how to train them?

For a bit of clarity, a "small-surface strike" is pretty much any strike that utilizes a very small striking area. Some examples, other than the ones above, would be oyayubi-uchi (thumb knuckle strike), washide-uchi (beak hand strike), and nukite-tsuki (spear hand thrust). Ryan Parker Sensei wrote a great blog post about small-surface strikes, if you're unfamiliar with them: http://ryukyuma.blogspot.com/2013/04/small-surface-strikes-structurally.html

Some interesting points. A key thing with this form of striking, is what he has done - hit things with them ! I'm really surprised at how at few martial artists I meet who do this. Especially the supposed followers of kyusho. My only issue is with the article is nakadaka ken. I use the 'useless' method, following bag work practice. Nakadaka ken done in the 'useless' manner doesn't collapse - pop open and collapse on impact, like say ippon ken, but the middle finger is just pushed back into the fist for a still semi-effective punch. Also the optimal hand forms shown are like mine, non-text book and slightly untidy. It worried me when attending a kyusho course, I was corrected to use text book hand form. To me , that equals the guy running the course has never practiced striking bags or makiwara etc with these strikes. I found that worrying !

  3. Hello and welcome to the forum. All the advice above is good, I would also add, get a book on Yoga. Simply start a little routine of stretching daily and expand from there, as you feel the areas you need to work at more.

  4. Personally I regard Seko Higa as the second headmaster of Goju Ryu - but that's just me.

i cant really find too much on him besides the same thing thts everywhere - trained with kanyro, trained with miyago, some say he was kicked out. - thats it.

    did he teach?

    As I said :

In my view he's been rather 'air-brushed' from Goju Ryu's history.

It's very hard to find info on him. A line here , a paragraph there....How important was he ? He was one of only two of Miyagi's students EVER given permission by Miyagi, and in Miyagi's life time to open up a Dojo teaching Goju Ryu.

This blog, by Sanzinsoo is a good starting point :

  5. As to the succession of leadership, following Chojun Miyagi's death. Yamaguchi named himself Miyagi's successor, and leadership of Goju Ryu in Japan (rather than Okinawa). If anything Miyagi's successor would have been Seko Higa. The senior surviving student upon Miyagia's death. In my veiw he's been rather 'air-brushed' from Goju Ryu's history. Following Higa's death we had a age dominated by four masters, each putting a case, but none establishing control. Yamaguchi, in Japan. Yagi, Toguchi and Miyazato, on Okinawa.

  6. At its core Goju Ryu contains twelve Kata, ten original Kata of Chinese origin plus the Gekisai pair of basic Kata. These were added to the original Kata in the 1940s .

This is the core on which all branches of Goju Ryu agree, and a sizeable proportion use purely these twelve Kata. Beyond this , some branches, associations, groups or schools have added more .

Goju Kai ; the Japanese branch, originally headed by Gogen Yamaguchi (1909-1989). He added a set of five Taikyoku Kata. These are introductory Kata, taught ahead of the Gekisai pair. Though they use the same name, and even Kanji (symbols) as Shotokan’s Karate’s Taikyoku Kata , they are unrelated. Plus he also devised an advanced Kata, Genkaku, which was added to Goju Kai’s syllabus.

The Shoreikan branch, founded by Seikichi Toguchi (1917-1998), added two Hookiyu Kata, again ahead of Gekisai . He also added a third version of Gekisai ( Dai San) . Along with two more pairs of Kata that follow on from Gekisai : Gekiha 1 and 2 and Kakuha 1 and 2 .

The Ishikawa branch added the advanced Kata, Tsuru-te, following the core Kata.

This leads us to the unfortunately named Fukyu group of Kata. Again these are introductory Kata taught ahead of the Gekisai pair of Kata. There are up to five of them used by differing branches. Some branches use just the first, or the first two of the set. The Meibukan branch is to my knowledge, the only one that uses all five. Meibukan, headed by the Yagi family, have also developed an additional five advanced Kata added to the core Kata syllabus . Uniquely, Meibukan have also maintained the practise of Naihanchi Kata.

  7. Following on from what Spartacus Maximus has already said depending on what your parents and sensei say, you guys may also want to inform the police. In some areas, threats via sites like facebook are a criminal offence. For example...

    http://tbo.com/news/crime/florida-court-threats-via-facebook-are-crimes-b82466165z1

    http://www.wigantoday.net/news/local/death-threats-via-facebook-1-6583728

It's not nice to be bullied, considering that - as you have said - he already tried to attack you, so you used self-defence to protect yourself.

I repeat DO NOT meet him or go looking for him. Ignore him unless he is in your personal space and about to attack you. Otherwise it will not be self defense but a fight.
    So true!

On a trivial side note, wagnerk you posted something from my home town I hadn't picked up on. I'm from Wigan.

  8. now acording to his facebook he and 5 friends are going to find me on my way home and beat me up.

Save the facebook, screen shot or what ever ! Other than that, follow the advice of the other posters. Report, build the evidence. Then if , IF, you have to physically deal with him, the evidence proves your self defense and the source of the trouble.

  9. Only with children...which is how she is behaving. Children were given a chance, then told not to return. She obviously doesn't understand the etiquette of the martial arts. She needs to be told in no uncertain terms, the what and why of it. If that makes no difference, then it's time for her to leave.
