  1. He is not over rated at all really. I used to think this too but then I stopped to think about how he was "rated" so to speak. I think his single most notable act was not that of beating people up or even training some of todays greats but it was the act of going against all of his tradition and showing Kung Fu styles to the "enemy" (Americans). I do not know how good he was as a fighter as I never saw him fight myself but I understand that he participated in kung fu fights on roof tops on hong kong with no glits or glamour LONG before he was a star. Was he the best fighter ever? Probably not. Was he VERY good? YES! It all depends on how you are thinking he is over rated. What are you basing this opinion on? And as far as your o so loved Chuck Noris ummm last time I checked he was doing the horrid show known by the name of walker texas ranger. I stopped on it once to see what it was like and he was using some device to focus his "chi" to stop an air plane that was trying to run him over HAHA So in my mind not only was Bruce a better fighter he was a better movie star as well And last time I checked Chuck Norris has not openly defied his government or any secret organizations to teach martial arts to those they did not see fit. On a side note all the championships that Norris has won were POINT bases (NOT REAL) (NOT STREET WORTHY). Bruce fought with no rules and no pads and won much of the time. Just a few thoughts!
  2. Yeah she may have mentioned one of those arts you named and said that kodenken was just anotehr way to say it or a more common or locall name I cannot remember. Would you be interested in calling the school andaskingfor a breif history and liniage and then telling me what you think? To me she sounded legit but like I said I havnt been able to observe a class as I don't live there yet. This is a direct link to the name of the sensei and the address phone number and email of the school. I hope I am not crossing any lines by posting this info here but it is on the web so already open to the public right? I would just appriciate someone informed like yourself or anyone here to talk to her directly and tell me your take on it. http://chicokodenkan.com/contact.html Thanks guys and girls
  3. Thank you for the reply Kyle-san. It is VERY inspiring! I am leaning HEAVILY towards the jujitsu.
  4. Hey Everyone! I was looking into Aikido as some of you may remember and also Kuk Sul Do. I am now leanign towards Kodenkan Jujitsu because they do full sparring and they claim to have all the join locks and throws of aikido and alot of striking as well. They say Aikido stems from this art. The woman I talked to seemed VERY informed and nothing she said sounded at all made up or false. I still havnt moved yet so i havnt been able to observe a class but I was just curious on everyones thoughts. If you had the option of Aikido, Kuk Sul Do, or Kodenkan Jujitsu which of these would you recamend for my needs? I want to learn how to defend myself. I realize MAs are life time commitments but I would like to use what i learn fairly quickly like be somewhat usable on the street in the first year. I REALLY WANT TO LEARN JOINT LOCKS AND TAKE DOWNS so I am thinking the Juhitsu would be super cool. And the real world wrestlign sparring sessions. Here is the link to the site for the dojo. Please let me know what you guys think. They also teach acupuncter that is cool. And Weapons also. Check the link and let me know what ya think. http://chicokodenkan.com/ Thanks
  5. I have had blood work done to see if I have any hyper or underactive thyroid problems because I have high anxiety but they came out fine. I also have a post going about howw I feel sick or exsuasusted if I weight lift. I do not know why really. I am trying to ease into it as slowly as possible but it is hard when you feel like crap every time you do it
  6. Thanks Kick Chick! I will try all of those ideas! Yeah I try to work out first thing in the AM because I like to get a shower early in the day and also I didn't want to get cleaned up then get sweaty again. I guess I will just start waking up and eating a good well rounded breakfast then wait an hour to digest a bit then do my work out and just take a shower around 11 or so. That is not so bad. I will try that tomorrow or the next day and let you know how it goes. Thanks again for the great info! Take care!
  7. Hey everyone! When I was a kid I would play basket ball, foot ball, baseball, skateboard and everything else and always feel fine but all my life if I try to weight lift I feel sick after wards. I am 24 now and in terrible shape. I am not over wieght or anything. I am about 6 foot 1 inch tall and onyl weigh about 145 lbs. I have nto worked out in a long long time. My only exercise i have gotten in the past 3 years is skateing but i keep twisting ankles and breakign stuff so I stopped that. Anyway I am now trying to get into at least half way decent shape because I will be starting Kodenkan Jujitsu soon and do not want to look foolish. I am only working out like 10 minutes each morning doign jumping jacks, sit ups, pushups, and soem rapid fast punching. I am not sure if it is the cardio vascular aspect that is making me feel ill or the straining of pushups. I think it is the pushups because on days I skip them I feel fine or at least better. How should I start to train? If I keep feeling sick like this I will not stick with it. Is being sick just something I need to stick out until ti goes away or should I work out a little less? Like I said I am only trying 10 minutes each morning. I do not have any heart trouble to my knowledge but I have just always felt sick when lifting. How can I ease into pushups without feeling so crappy? man all my posts end up being so long! I am sorry guys and gals. Any advice would be great THANKS!
  8. Hey everyone! Let me just say that I am 24 years old and about 6 foot tall. (maybe slightly taller actually) Anyway I once weighed as much as like 175 lbs with steel toe boots on But now I am down to 145 lbs! I have like anxiety and stress alot but I EAT A TON! I eat so much I would have thought I would be gaining like mad. But I think I am so nervous and gittery that I burn all my calories worrying or something. Can anyone recammend some sort of diet to gain wieght? I do not need to be a muscle man or anything but 180-200 lbs is the range I would like to be in. I think at my height and body structure that 185-200 would be an optimal range for muscle withotu sacraficing any quickness. I have searched on the wbe but all I get is link to buy books on the subject. Should I eat a ton of eggs, meat, and potatoes or what? Thanks guys and gals!
  9. Thanks for all that great info Jacob! IT gave me a lot to think about and set my mind at ease about many aspects of th whole thing. I think I have found the art I will start with and it is Kodenkan Jujitsu. I spoke with the instructor on the phone and she said it has all the joint locks and take downs of aikido but it does not specialize in it. It also has all the Grapple and groudn work of BJJ but liekwise does not specialize in it. She said it is the art which BJJ and Aikido and kenp all stemed from. She seemed to know her stuff. Any thoughts on this particular art? So now I am thinking most likely Kodenkan Jujitsu then I also am considering Kuk Sul Do and Aikido still Thoughts are always great! O and welcoem to this board! I LOVE IT SO FAR! everyone is so helpful and respectful it is outstanding!
  10. I thinkI have settled on Kodenkan Jujitsu. Sounds like the perfect ma for me. Thus far anyway. I cannot check out the classes until I get up there though
  11. I just talked to a place that teaches Kodenkan Jujitsu. I talked to a woman that I beleive is the head instructor. She has been in the art for 25 years and is a black belt of some kind but I forgot what dan. All my knowlege thus far on Jui Jitsu has been from BJJ and the gracies. It was my understanding that there was no striking trained in jui jitsu but she explained that traditionaly there are! She explained how when Jui jitsu was taken to Brazil they only tought to a cetain level then the gracies took the grapplign and perfected it but they did not learn past that. She seemed very informed on martial arts and basically all asian culter and history. It sounds great and I think I will be trying it. She said that Aikido stems directly from Jui Jitsu and that all the joint locks and take downs come from jui jitso. Does this sound right? They do full sparring like BJJ. They do not have single person Katas which I am happy about. It sounds VERY well rounded and not too rooted in Ki or Chi. Any thoughts or experience with this art? I will be checkingit out. The only reason I ask all this is because I do not livei n the area yet and am only going on phoen conversations with the people
  12. my 5 goals and reasons for taking a martial art are as follows. #1 obtain a practicle means of self defence usefull in all most any situation. #2 Reduce Anxiety and Panic (learn to relax and breath right and get good work out) #3 build self confidence #4 I want an art that would not hand me a black belt in under 2 years. I want to REALLY have to work to acheive my goal. #5 NO or as little to do with training chi or ki You see guys and gals it is odd. I was raised highly Christian and I know that martial arts do not go against it. I know for a fact BUT when people start debating like that one thread where some guy was listing links to some pastor saying all MA were evil it scares me. Logicly I know that this is just a man saying things that he has no proff of and I do not beleive that god has any objection to me learnign self defence but like I said I was raised so obssesivly Religous that like to even be in or around a debate like that one threat adds great anxiety for me. At this point I am not sure what I want. In the Chico Ca area I am moving to They do have a Kuk Sul Do School that I was very interested in. I do like that it is a hard soft style consiting of breaking and power as well as relaxing soft movment. Here Guys I will post a link to the list of schools in the area I am moving and you guys letm e know your thoughts. I am mainly considering Judo/jui jitsu, Aikido, Kuk Sul Do. http://yp110.superpages.com/listings.phtml?CID=7999EF231C2&AL=&C=martial+arts&T=chico&PG=L&STYPE=S&R=N&SRC=altavista&S=CA&NA=&PM=0008412e&LC=15&PI=1&MC=1&CB=&PP= This link will show you all schools I have the choice of. Thansk everyone!
  13. I under stand. See I was raised highly Christian and the thing is I know that like alot of MA practisioners are christian it is still just a little weird for me when tryign to develope chi and all that. It just is not for me. I love the way Aikido moves are performed btu I understand that Aikido is HEAVY on tradition (a tradition that is not mine) and I just dont feel comfortable in a lot of those atmospheres. See I want something that is SOmewhat liek a martial sport but not Tae Kwon do or anything like that. I want somethign legit but streight forward physical training. I do not like Katas of any kind or forms. I do not need or want to train my chi to preform feets of stregth either I do not need any deep profound reason to do a MA other than self confidence and to be able to lay someone out if I need too. I know it sounds shallow but I have tried the rest now I just want practice stuff I am thinking Judo is the way to go. or Jui Jitsu whatever. I am moving to the Chico Ca area soon and I looked in the phone book there. There is 2 judo places. I Will call them tomorrow and ask what the classes are like. I would like Boxing or kick boxing but i think getting punched in the head sparring non stop would be brutal on my head. yeah Judo or Aikido Hmmm proly Judo
  14. Well what I meant by Sparring is the hands on aspect of training all the various moves such as joint locks and throws with a partner. I also know that in Aikido most schools have a belt test where multiple attacks come at you one right after the other and you have to deflect all thei attacks by throwing each one or something like that. I realize that Aikido does not have sparriing per say but they do really drill the techniques in hard byt repeating them over and over with partners. Yeah I had thought about BJJ also. I just am not sure. I have bounced around too much I want this next art to be something I can really stick with. Hmmmm One thing I would like about BJJ is the fact that it is not into all that mistic style stuff that the majority of the asian martial arts are right? I mean I know that jui jitsu orignates from asia ( I think ) but I do not think the gracies incorprate any kidn of meditations or spiritual journy do they in their teaching? BJJ is more of a martial sport with real life practicle applications right?
  15. Hello everyone. To make a long story short I have been looking for the right martial art for me all my life and think I have found it with Aikido. Just curious if there is anything special I should know before persuing this. When I was a child I did American Karate which felt liek a joke really. I have heard of people getting black belts in under 2 years which is just terible. I was interested in chinese arts such as tai chi and northern 5 animal kung fo styles but everywhere that teaches them will not do any sparing with the cop out of "our techniques are so deadly they cannot be sparred or you might kil your sparring partner" HAHA To me one cannot hone ones skills without tryingthem on a resisting opponent. Anyway I am leaning now more towards Japanese styles for the hard fast hands on approach. I like the looks of Aikido. I love the throws and Joint locks! I like that you can take down an opponent and hold them in a controlled joint lock if you do not want to seriously hurt them. To me it seems it gives the option to hold the attacked until police arrive or something like that and at the same time if they are still a threat just break their arm and move on So it is my understanding that traditional Aikido has no striking at all or if it does it is maybe just a few well placed punches or close line type movves right? No kicks at all? I think what I like most is the full on sparring that will prepare the student for real life situations. What is everyones opinion on Aikido as a stand alone art? Once I get well rooted liek 2 years into Aikido should I take up something such as kick boxing or something for striking as well? This is my first post. Nice meeting everyone! Take care!
