How is judging expected to change next year? I haven't followed wkf to closely but will be taking a few students to some of the Midwest competitions. Are the changes on usankf yet? Thank you. 7 judges. Separate scores for technical and athletic performance (the flag system will be gone). It will be in effect from Jan 1 2019 and introduced at the Paris Open in Jan. . The Chairs of the five continental referees commissions will attend a briefing at that event. What will be interesting is how regional events implement it. Hmm, so back to something similar to the old scoring system. Head to head scoring or total scoring in a group? I haven't check the wkf or usankf sites yet but are the rules now published there? Thank you. It’s not on the WKF site yet. I had this appear on my newsfeed less than an hour ago so I’ve just taken my first look at it. https://karateyalgomas.com/2018/11/16/kata-and-kumite-competition-rules-for-2019/ In a lot of ways in operation it’s going to be similar to the old system.

There were still plenty of Unsu and Superimpi. Just not in the finals. Shimizu from Japan did Shitoryu throughout the rounds and in the final. However she also did Team kata and they did Shotokan kata throughout. Some Shotokan stylists seems to have picked up the kata Seisan from GenseiRyu. Things may change again when the judging system for kata changes next year.

I just returned home from the WKF World Championships. I would estimate that Shito Ryu kata comprised 70 to 80 % of the Kata performed in the individual divisions. All four finalists (Male and Female) performed Shito Ryu. In the women’s final both did Chatanyara Kushanku. The Men’s were one Annan Dai and i think the other was also Chatanyara. There was far more Shotokan in the team events.

I think it’s likely to hold its place for Paris 2024. WKF Karate is massive in France. They have a strong team that is fully funded and events get wide TV covered. However LA2028 and it is almost certainly gone.

The Olympic program includes kata. A more relevant question would be whether the Incluson of karate in the Olympics will lead to some WKF based schools to become more sport focused. I have no doubt the answer is Yes.

I have all of the Arawza gis you mentioned. The Onyx Evloution is 7oz which the Air is 6 and the Zero Gravity is 5. It depends on what you want them for. I probably wear the Evolution the most. The Air and the Zero Gravity are paper thin compared to the Evolution. I wasn't a huge fan of the Air but the Zero Gravity is great. It has that similar smooth fabric feel on the surface that the Evolution has. My son who competes has worn the Zero Gravity almost exclusively in competition since he got it this time last year.

Existing in a karate club when I'm opposed to sports karate.

Its not a demonstration sport. The medals will be bona fide Olympic medals. Changes to the selection process for Olympic sports werre made a year or two ago. There are now 25 Core Sports. Other sports such as Golf, Rugby and Karate are subject to approval for each subsequent games. -
Yeah - looked a tough division. Looks like your club did pretty well.

How did you go. Saw your face across the other side of the competition area but was so busy I didn't get the chance to say Hi.

I've never seen the white ones apart from those photos. They certainly look the same and the current model. The Red and Blue ones are WKF approved and they would not make specific WKF approved white ones. WKF changed there style about two years ago and all WKF gloves became more curved to offer more protection. Compare the Red and blue ones on that site to the white ones.

Kata will be included in Tokyo along with Kumite. The divisons will be Male kata Female kata Male kumite - 3 weight categories. Female kumite - 3 weight categories. 10 competitors per division. No team kata? That's my favorite division to watch! Mine also - esp at World level - but no Team kata. The reason Karate and the other new sports got the opportunity to be included was they changed the Rules for inclusion from Maximum number of sports to maximum number of athletes allowed at the games. All of the new sports except baseball/softball have been accepted based on submissions that included 80 athletes. I guess Team kata would have meant another 30 competitors and jeapordised our inclusion.

> How did you first become interested in martial arts? A school was opening nearby and a friend asked my brother and I to come along with him. This was 1978 and my brother and I are still involved along with 2 others who also started on that very first day. 2> What discipline did you decide to practice? Shotokan 3> Why did you choose that specific discipline over the other disciplines? Proximity – It was the only school in the area. 4> What is your skill level within your martial arts discipline? Yondan. 5> What other things do you like to do? (When you're not in the gym/dojo, what else do you like to do with your time? This can be physical or nonphysical pass times) I have very little free time. I like to spend what I have with my family. I love to travel – mostly karate related. 6> What are the first 3 martial arts related brands that come to your mind. (FIRST, not BEST). Arawaza Tokaido Shureido 7> How do you decide what martial arts gear/equipment to get? (How do you select one type or brand over another?) Comfort and quality. I spend many many hours in a gi. 8> Roughly how often to you buy new martial arts equipment? For myself never. For the club – maybe fortnightly. 9> Where do you get your equipment from? Is there a reason for this? Z sportwear. They have been excellent to deal with.

The above is correct how please consider if this response you are describing is something new and not your body's normal reaction to intense exercise. If so please see a Doctor.

Martial arts mentality to fight cancer!
wayneshin replied to Luther unleashed's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Such devastating news for your family. From first hand I ca say your daughters karate will help her be strong and battle through it. As it will help you be strong for your family. My daughter was diagnosed with a brain tumour when she was 8. By 10 she had 4 major brain surgeries. By 12 she had returned to training to get her black belt win a National kumite title and represent Australia. Her tumour has returned a number of times. She has been through 2 rounds of chemo at 15 and 18 and missed three quarters of her schooling. But she is strong. Now 19 again in remission she has enrolled in a diploma course and gets on the train a couple of times a week to meet me for lunch. I bring my focus pads, we head to a nearby park and she trains. And I cherish every hit on those pads. I hope all goes well with your daughter. There are constant breakthroughs and new treatments with cancer. -
the WKF Senior World championships in 2012 in Paris. The 16000 seat stadium was sold out for all 4 days six months in advance. (2014 worlds were also sold out months in advance) All 4 finals sessions can be found in full on YouTube. This one features Female Team kata then the Men's Team kumite between France and Turkey) Hope the link works. If not search 2012 WKF world Paris afternoon.

We had him out for a week a few years back and he was great. Its a long wait till 2017 but he seems to be booked out that far in advance.

We had Jesse over at our dojo on Saturday evening. Good session primarily on biomechanics. He certainly knows his stuff. We are having Iian Abernethy out again in early 2017. If your interested I'll keep you posted.

Great clip Joe. Saw this floating around Facebook on the lead up to the Jnr Worlds. Great editing. Lot of work. Looks like a couple of years worth of footage you squeezed in?

Nidan Grading soon

All the best mate. I'm sure you will smash it. -
This seems to get raised every so often and I am going to put forward the same point of view I always do. Very few people are completely ambidextrous. This means if you are right handed and you switch to southpaw you will be less effective. Tennis players do not change hands, cricketers do not and at Elite level in combat sports most fighters do not. There can of course be advantages but it is more important to practise against both sides than to try to develop both sides.
