Yeah it is really a shame what has happened to martial arts over the past 20 years. I guess that's the way in this country. They look at Karate as great for TV but not for fighting. Also a lot of people tried to capitalize on the popularity of Karate due to movies and put Karate on the front of all the store fronts. Some were some were not like I know of 3 TKD places and they say Karate so does a JKD place by me. Also Tiger Showmans however he spells it went from TKD to Karate to MMA in my life time. At no point did those schools teach anything that was a true art and it has really hurt Karate as a whole in this area.

Another problem you have is many "fans" of MMA hate traditional arts now and only believe MMA is the right way to fight. I think both sides of this argument needs to chill out a lot.

The New Karate Kid Movie
Taiikuka replied to ichigotora's topic in Martial Arts Gaming, Movies, TV, and Entertainment
They may not own the rights to "Kung Fu" but the rights to "Kung Fu Kid" as it may in fact be a movie they plan to make or they just don't want something selling off their movie. Because they can't possibly own "Kung Fu" by law or pure rationalization tells you to many things on TV and movie have already had Kung Fu in or as the title. -
I hope your right but i think those days are gone and we will see more and more MMA style until there is no other arts involved.

It will come to a time where you stop letting yourself get hit in the head. Remember even if it doesn't "hurt" you to bad it is still doing damage to your brain so try and not let it keep happening needlessly.

I think we are saying the same thing in many ways just saying them a little different. My point is MMA is a style all its own now because it is so new no one wants to admit it but it is pretty much a way of training and a set of moves. Yeah people have their own "base" style but really most of that does get thrown out when you get really involved with high end MMA like the UFC. Like Karate was adapted off of Kung Fu for the people of Japan so to is MMA for fighters today.

The fact is under the current rules being on the mat is the best way to win because you get a ton of points by take-downs. In the old days (I know Gracie won the 1st 3 but that was because he was so good not his style was superior) you fought to a win no rounds no points it lended itself to having multiple arts fight its just not as true anymore.

Welcome to the board I am a new member as well. Good to see this board is active and getting new members

No that isn't what I ment. I mean if your club is affiliated with one governing body and another club is part of a different one like say mine is S.K.I.F and yours was the JKA would we still do the same Katas because in tae kwon do you don't each governing body has its own forums and that was a bit annoying.

My Jeet Kune Do response would be simple and yet the response for just about any move you can think up. If a Right punch of any kind is thrown you throw a straight punch off the left hand. The idea here is yours come out just in front of the other cutting it off and landing a blow to the head first. In Jeet Kune do you do not block. I thought this was a little odd when i first started training but Bruce Lee felt it was a waste of energy to block when you can have the same effect with a punch of your own. Even if you opponent was able to keep from getting hit by blocking or moving his head you now have both his hands tied up in a move while you can go for a second attack w3ith the other hand. As far as kicks it is pretty much the same a Front kick or if in close enough a jab will do since your front side is your strong side in JKD when landing the blow it is a very hard and effective hit.

I had the same problem as you did never did find a good drill to fix that problem. What did finally fix that problem was someone cleaned my clock once with a hit to the chin. I hope you can fix that problem the easy way.

I would be careful about how you go about doing that as well. Some people may take your offering of the bruises info as a way of covering for someone. Just let everyone know that you take Karate as the convo goes on talk about how you say TV shows and never thought it would be this physically demanding. They should be able to put one and one together on their own.

To answer that they are improving faster then you ever did. Training has been influenced so much more by science now. Also there is more stuff in our food to help you grown stronger if you work out and not just sit on the couch. Another big thing is the way in which we workout outside the gym now a days is so much different in the last 20 years. It's like when people argue baseball players. Today players are just flat out better athletes because of their gym time and supplements Mickey Mantle was great and maybe he would have benefited from the work out programs of today but he just wasn't as strong or fast or able to bounce back from injury like guys today can.

Kettle Worx put out a DVD set for a 6 week program to burn fat and build muscle. I use it and it is great. An awesome workout to be honest. I started with a lighter weight to get used to using it but i have to tell you it is a true full body workout and has really helped me.

I was in Tae Kwon Do and in that art they have 2 major groups. the WTF and the ITA now if you study at a school depending on who they are with you will get different sets to learn is that the same in Shotokan or do you learn primarily the same no matter what your club is part of.

The guy who lives across the street from me was going into the UFC a few years back he was a boxer who trained in JKD I believe not sure but either way someone scouted him for MMA and they completely changed his style mad him turn around his fighting stance so his strong side was back again (The reason i think it was JKD since strong side is forward and I don't believe any other art does that) He was taken to a training facility out on long island somewhere. They trained him for a few months (girl i worked with was dating him at the time so i got more info then i really even cared about... lol) After all the training they sent him out for his first match and he had no clue how to fight again. You could see he had to think every move out for a second to long so he got pounded it was really a shame because he worked so hard for it and really was a smart fighter before but they just put to much on him in to little of a time.

I did Kendo in the 3rd grade and had to leave but when I went back to Martial Arts I went on to do Jeet Kune Do. I much different style. I to was WAY out of shape for it at first but it only took a month or two to get back into the swing of things. Your muscles will get their flexibility back soon enough. I know what you mean about having to grade all the way back to Brown. The reason my wife and I are not going back for Tae Kwon Do (Besides the fact that I like traditional Karate better) is that she got to an orange belt(not to far into the program but still) and the school we went to said she keeps the belt but has to do the promotion tests again. I feel it is just a way of them making even more money off of us and that isn't right. Now i did say "Traditional Karate" for a reason there are far to many watered down schools in my area that call themselves Karate and are a mix of some Karate Tae Kwon Do MMA style that like to call themselves Karate and use a belt system to justify it but I really feel this is hurting Karate and many people only feel like Jujitsu and Kung Fu are true arts now.

Hey I am going to add you to my Wii. The wife and I LOVE mario kart so we will be willing to play from time to time.

MMA is no longer really MMA everyone does a jujitsu/muay thai type of training. Even if you have trained in something your entire life you are then trained for the MMA style of fighting.

What is the reason why you joined the Martial Arts?
Taiikuka replied to Adonis's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I was originally enrolled in Kendo because I was getting picked on in school. I was a big kid so it was odd that they would pick me back in the 3rd grade but I wouldn't fight back at all. Not 20 years later it is about staying in shape. I played baseball my whole life as a 1st basemen or a catcher. Now i can't even walk a day after a game. My flexibility is shot and I hurt all the time. I also like the competition not that I want to go around beating people up I just like to see where I stand with my peers and to my understanding the tournaments in my area are run very well with good fun competition so i hope to enjoy that aspect of the "sport" side of it soon. -
A Black Belt being an ultimate goal for someone isn't the worst thing in the world. I have noticed that people who talk about wanting to get their black belt are some what looked down on, on all the sites I have been reading. For some this is the ultimate goal because they have earned something not just anyone can accomplish They worked hard for a number of years and now the reward is a black belt. With that said I have studied many arts and for one reason or another have not gotten to gain such a rank in any of the arts I have tried. Kendo (Parents ran into money trouble, Jeet Kune Do The school closed, Tae Kwon Do Wife and I were starting our family. As far as our new endevor into Shotokan I doi hope to one day gain a black belt and help teach at a school. The main reason for this is I would like to see my son learn the art as well and would want to be one of the influences in his teaching.

Thanks for the Help guys. Hope to be on my way to getting that training I have always wanted since i was a boy and one day when my son is old enough he to will train with my wife and I since it is a good bonding experience

You can't watch Videos of a type of Art and say hey that one always wins it must be best. Muay Thai gets it clocked cleaned a lot in the UFC by Jujitsu guys. Chuck Lindel who was light Heavyweight Champ did Karate and learned most of his Striking (For which he is known) from Kendo. I comes down to how hard you train and what you like to do. I have done many arts over the years. Jeet Kune Do imo the best for fighting in the street but the UFC has proved an entirly different animal for the art of JKD. Do I think it is the art that is the problem or just the fact that not enought people who practice it go into MMA with the same heart as the other arts. I would think it is the second option. Think about how many schools in your area teach some of these arts. Then look at the teachers and find out which ones have watered it down to where you gain "black Belt" in 2 years and also have mixed in so many other arts to "make it better" For some that is ok for me I like traditional Training.
