It would be a long, narrowish room with mirrors on one of the short ends and storage on the other. Aside from that, everything would be matted: the walls, the floor, the storage cabinets, probably even the mirrors. I enjoy few things more than running people into walls and abusing them: this sort of layout would afford me that opportunity.

Bujin Student Handbook
Liver Punch replied to tallgeese's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
But I "Train UFC". I've got the Orange/Pink Covered handbook that emerged from the original AAWAA meeting, as well as a copy of the old booklet that touched on women's self-defense seminars and some other things - basically the precursor to the AAWAA booklet. I'm an advocate of all of our videos and photos being on DVD/Digital format. The same goes for all of our stuff in print. I think having sections written by elder students on different and specific topics would be a great thing to have in writing. Perhaps a group-wide whip-cracking could lead toward this sort of thing? -
My only thoughts in a self-defense situation are in regards to stopping the attack with the appropriate amount of force. If I follow this rule, then the consequences are already taken care of.

What is important in a Woman's Self Defense siminar?

I like to send them home deathly afraid of two things: Significant others and box vans. -
Well, that makes this an early post of the month candidate. I'm not sure about Karate, but there's a decent chance that a whole lot of boxing actually will make you dumb.

The complete obliviousness to the fact that he's clearing a room with rifle/crutch is pretty hard to top. http://youtu.be/AF1gakfiEyA http://youtu.be/P8kjBDTbJcg I'm glad we worked in all the stuff that I don't like. And let me just go on record as saying that it's not a matter of men to seeing merit in it, nor is it a matter of me viewing it as useless. I'd teach this stuff to anyone - I just prefer "hulk smash". Oh, and uniforms - I hate uniforms. http://youtu.be/ou1EdOdKgBg http://youtu.be/4pI-hPSR7BE Edit: More http://youtu.be/62PfQxl6zWA http://youtu.be/EaLV0PSSSYk http://youtu.be/bBgzPsTt0Vg

I've got no complaints with it at all. It's very direct, scientific, and to the point. It's been used by military, civilians, women, and children. I like about 99% of everything they do. That, however, isn't to say that all instruction and instructors are capable of teaching it, regardless of their claims. Anything that's profitable has imitators, frauds, and liars riding its coattails.

Ok, I just realized that the map on the beginning shows them coming to where I am. This place is Crussemeyer's Martial Arts in Elkhart, IN. http://crussemeyerma.com/ I'm going to check them out tonight...I guess we'll see.

As for the groin shots, I think it's a whole lot easier to learn how to block that sort of shot...there's probably less pain involved too. The shots to the body aren't anything beyond what a lot of people take in sparring or toughness drills, and if you breathe with it, it's really not that horrible. We take throat strikes, and tightening and breathing out is the best way to do it - the physiology is such as it prevents injury. I'm not sure what they're saying in the video, or if they're claiming that this is all possible as a result of sheer internal energy, but it seems to be a group of martial artists who perform the proper biological responses to specific attacks.

I do remember taking a great deal of pleasure in over-filling everyone's bucket while their head was turned the other direction. Edit: The Suffering Continues. I don't think our sprints were caught on tape, but...they were most unwelcome. http://youtu.be/o7w0-mk5RAc http://youtu.be/RJW6qCiNhT4 http://youtu.be/7N-zxALdA8g

I'll be posting a good portion of what was my black belt test, Groin Strike's 2nd Brown Belt Test, and another Student's 1st Brown Belt Test (3rd Kyu). I'm working on uploading the video, so most - if not all of it - will be posted by midnight. This is from October of 2010, and was about 8 hours long. Tallgeese was on the testing board along with Master Pain, who participated in the test for the fun of it. We started off in the morning by unloading a trailer full of gravel with shovels and buckets. This led into an obstacle course, which was followed up with finishing the gravel unload. We were then challenged to put on and take off the gate of the trailer. Groinstrike had a particularly good time with this. We then broke for lunch and got back to the gym. I led the class through drills for what seemed like forever, and then we did a little bit of weapon stuff, grappling, and sparring. We've got a huge chunk of everything on film and it's pretty good entertainment in my opinion. I'm uploading everything to my computer as we speak. Edit: Here are all the videos for those of you who don't want to dig through this entire thread. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MLDZ4glbO8k http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RnDgh6mhusg http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2O4QHJR7Xv8 http://youtu.be/MpnM9sVrkiQ http://youtu.be/E4EJ1uuWW44 http://youtu.be/o7w0-mk5RAc http://youtu.be/RJW6qCiNhT4 http://youtu.be/7N-zxALdA8g http://youtu.be/CSiIv0YfvaE http://youtu.be/n_rXa-62fmA http://youtu.be/AF1gakfiEyA http://youtu.be/P8kjBDTbJcg http://youtu.be/ou1EdOdKgBg http://youtu.be/4pI-hPSR7BE http://youtu.be/62PfQxl6zWA http://youtu.be/EaLV0PSSSYk http://youtu.be/bBgzPsTt0Vg http://youtu.be/l15R8abq4og http://youtu.be/32ismWy6rmg http://youtu.be/vhZihG0kF6o http://youtu.be/VffjDTfyhcg http://youtu.be/DJzGK44NkdU

I'll agree with situational awareness 110%. Statistics are a good wake-up for a lot of them. Teaching them a little bit of paranoia and a whole lot of assertiveness are the next building blocks in my opinion. -
Best Christmas present for a martial artists?

When I took that machete out of its packaging, I got the heck out of my finger. Let that be a lesson on one of the reasons that you shouldn't open sharp objects while driving a car with a manual transmission. Edit: Cut...i cut the heck out of my finger. Now I look foolish in front of the entire internets. -
These tests are a heck of a lot of fun. I've been kicking around ideas for your next test. I mean, at this point, I think we just as well make it harder and harder. (By which I mean more fun of course) Congrats on that extra black piece of electrical tape - its value in dollars may be less than 1/3 of one cent, but all of us who have earned one know that it comes at a tremendous cost. As for you next test, I've been thinking about proposing something that's a mix between Spetznaz training, and the Eco Challenge...with a little running of the bulls thrown in for good measure - and then concluding with what would basically amount to a real life version of a Game of Death.

Without having read this entire thread for a week or two, I can tell you one thing. It's always a good idea to hit them with your Buick. Automobiles - particularly those favored by the elderly, have a very high force multiplication level.

Is "how much force to use" the wrong question?
Liver Punch replied to Liver Punch's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I'm not hurling myself toward anything. I'm standing at a safe distance with a weapon pointed toward a threat shouting instructions to them to stay in a non-threatening position. I'm not attacking them - I've already defended myself, I'm keeping them neutralized. Of course, I could take the word of someone who's obviously under the influence of alcohol and in a state where they are prepared to hurt or kill another human being. Why wouldn't I assume that they're a threat to themselves or others? I'm not taking anything this person says as the truth. Why did I defend myself to start with? Shouldn't the people with badges take care of that? Why do I have a 1911 on my person? It's not a hunting gun..its purpose is defense. That's the job of the police. In fact, I'm doing the police's job if I take any sort of action in this situation. I should probably throw away my first aid kit and fire extinguisher because that's EMS and the Fire Fighter's job. As a citizen with a concealed carry permit, my state has deemed it legal for me to carry and use a firearm in the defense of myself and others. So, once I've created space, and given myself enough time to draw my weapon, the number of things that can happen decrease substantially. The payoff is that I don't run inside and loose control of a situation that had seconds earlier been much less dangerous. If you want to run inside and watch an armed and dangerous person roam your neighborhood, be my guest. My obligation is a moral one - I don't want my neighbors and random passer-by's to be stabbed. Just because we CAN stand by and let bad things happen doesn't make a good idea. -

Controlling the knife would be step number one. After that, I'd want to control it and remove it if possible. The next best option would be to push her and the weapon as far away as possible, knocking her down if possible. If the knife is secure, I'd control her physically and yell my lungs raw for help to arrive. If the knife isn't secure, I'd draw my pistol, put myself between her and the door, and start negotiating at gunpoint (while making a 911 call). If I'm secure, and my home is secure, I've got to make sure she isn't a harm to anyone else. In short, my number one concern is controlling this person. This is to a)protect my family, b) to protect myself, and c) to protect the general public. If I'm at all capable, I have to protect everyone from this threat - I think it's my responsibility.
