  1. What's your ultimate goal? Do you want to become an MA instructor, or a trainer? I ask because from an employment point of view, if you have a long period of time where you're not in school or in work you may find it difficult to get started on an employment path if it doesn't involve professional MA.
  2. Here's the Wiki on it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sh%C5%ABd%C5%8Dkan I don't know much about how it differs from other styles, as I only started last month, but my sensai trained under Sensai Morris Mack who is mentioned in the Wiki. I gather from comparisons with Youtube videos that some of the katas are different. Kihon Kata Ichi is the same as others but Pinan Nidan is different.
  3. Is there anything like that for Shudokan? It's the style taught here and I am learning that it's a very small subset with few outside resources.
  4. Thank you! My sensei said I'm coming along very quickly yesterday, and the other sensei/owner said my Pinan Nidan was looking good
  5. And here too! Shizentai, I hope you are still visiting this thread - I can't PM yet. The "buy comic" link on your webcomic page isn't working.
  6. Hello, I'm studying Shudokan karate which I gather is a relatively small branch of karate. I would like to find some reference materials (books, dvds) to help me with kata, stances and so forth but I don't want to learn the "wrong style". Are there any reference materials that would be suitable for me? So far all I can do is look on Youtube after I have already seen the kata, so I know that it's the right one. I'm currently learning Pinan Nidan but have only seen the first third so far. Thanks!
  7. Have you watched the cartoon version ("Avatar: The Last Airbender")? It's really fantastic. The creators are martial artists and drew upon MA cultures and techniques a lot, including getting advice from their own instructors. I've decided not to watch the live action movie (at least not any year soon) because there's really no way they could take a full season of the show and compress it into a movie without losing a great deal of crucial story. The cartoon was three seasons long and based on the movie trailers I'm pretty sure they're planning a trilogy of movies - the trailers don't cover anything past the end of Season 1.
  8. Hello, my name is Elizabeth and I have recently restarted Karate after a hiatus of many years. I took Isshin-Ryu in college and got to yellow belt before academic pressures forced me to stop. Now I am a white belt in Shudokan karate. So...hello!
