We use oss in our shotokan dojo but only when recieving instruction from our Sensei or higher ranking student,I've always been under the impression it is to acknowledge that you have understood the request

Congratulations on your grading I myself when I started karate was 15stone and I'm now alot healthier at 13.5 stone I wouldn't say It was all down to karate but I can't do me any harm can it

Had a busy life these last 6months so not been on here for a while another reason I dropped my laptop lol,but one thing that I didn't let slip was my karate,so last weekend was our dojos grading night and I'm proud to say I've got my brown belt ,hardest point of the 1 and a half hours was the kumite line up with the higher grades to cut the story short Ive got a few cuts and bruises for my efforts here's to a very long road ahead

well we cant beat mother nature,can we lol,and its looking like the snow is here for another week so im thinking its going to be the new year before our next grading but i am using the time to practise

well i was looking forward to my grading tomorrow 19th dec but due to a few snow flakes landing on the united kingdom its been cancelled

i think i wrote the original post about the filming in the far east the film was translated to the kung fu kid but the uk and other countries it was given the arate kid to try and get an interest from the original titles, as i see the film on its own merits it was a decent film ,but to much wire work in the fighting scences,as id already commented people are going to join a dojo and except themselfves to be doing spinning flips after 3 weeks ,comparing to the originals it doesnt get anywhere near the atmosphere of them,but i did like some of the similarites of the originals(the catching of the fly with chopsticks,jackie gave up and used a fly squater lol,wax on wax off(jacket on jacket off)the list goes on

it seems like a few that already have posted,i started later on in life i was 37 when i started last october and now im currently a 5th kyu going for my 4th kyu grading jan 2011,i may not be as physically fit as some 18/20 yr old but id say i put more effort into my training to compensate entered a tournament last month and came 2nd in my class 10th kyu to 4th kyu every opponent i faced was alot younger so id say theres life in the old dog yet lol

ive ordered my costume should be with me by wednesday/thursday of next week ive gone for the black ninja outfit by blitz(uk martial arts supplier)so good quality is guaranteed

who the heck is darkwing duck gather he's an american charachter,ive looked at the predator costume also still tempted to go as a ninja because they were hero's are villans depending how you look at it

ok guys and girls ive been invited to a fancy dress party in decemberand the theme are super hero's super villians ,so i need idea's but i think batman,spiderman,superman,hulk will all be done so im after originality,did think of a predators costume from aliens movies so any advice will be welcome cheers steve

slightly odd topic but couple of weeks ago i entered a nationals tournament in the kumite granted i was in a category from 10th kyu to 4th kyu (in a 5th kyu)the guy i lost to in the finals was a 4th kyu and had been that rank for over a year,however the 2nd class gets much tougher 3rd kyu through to all dan grades one of our guys is a first kyu and his semi final match was against a black belt so u would think slightly better advantage to the black belt well our guy won but it was only after our sensei told our guy he was a 5th dan,now i can look at this in 2 ways a,the 5th dan thought fighting a 1st kyu was an easy win(similar to the white belt Vs black belt)and underestimated his opponentand finally mentally our brown belt diddnt feel under pressure just because his opponent was on apperance 1 grade higher

my first grading was 13th december 2009,had my mock exam 2 weeks before and got the pass slip which alone was a relief(atleast i knew i was on the right track)turned up on the sunday not knowing what to expect and most students were very quiet nerves kicking in i expect anyway lessons started in grading order 10thkyu at the front with dan grades at the back,did my basic moves kion kata and set 1 after 10 mins it was done i was asked to stay on the floor while all the other white belts left the floor,i hadnt a clue what i had done anyway i carried on with set 1, shodan kata etc after that i was asked to leave grading carried on until all students had completed and at the end i was awarded my 8th kyu which i had double graded which doesnt happen often so i was told ,my next grading is in mid december for my 4th kyu(purple white stripe)

as for my own personnel commitiment ,well thats suffering at the moment not because of dedication,goals achieved or financial,its my working life every day i am expected to do longer hours working days off i am only able to attend lessons on sundays at the moment because its my contracted day off,plus im finding less and less spare time for myself ,so if a younger student is looking to be dropped off by a parent in the same situation as me there going to struggle

i go every sunday and tuesday 7-9

thanks for the messages guys,ive been given the video of my finals match,not wanting to moan because i am so chuffed that A, i had an amazing day B to go get 4 trophies from the 4 catogories i entered,but it looks like my finals opponent was given either 4 or 5 warnings for illegal striking what are your thoughts ps only ust got tonight so not asked my sensei and pps i bet someone posts..should not have got punched lol

well people ive had an amazing day,really enjoyed the team spirit that our dojo displayed,and ill be honest i never even thought id win a trophy,i just wanted to compete, learn from our experienced students and have a great time , i entered all 4 catogories and came 2nd in individual kata,2nd in individual kumite 4th in team kata and 4th in team kumite

thanks guys,had a shock on sunday night,ive been entered into individual kata(heian nidan and yodan if a tie)team kata,individual kumite im in senior mens 10th kyu-4th kyu and now team kumite which is open grade last year a fellow 5th kyu got drawn against a 5th dan black belt so if i do get drawn against a higher grade ill hopefully last a few seconds lol

tournaments this sunday 17th october,and im not that nervous...............who am i kidding im .......
