  1. yes i agree here, get someone to hold a focus pad to their chest and do a few punches and a few nukite...see which they feel more....people often feel my nukite more
  2. but this isn't a MA injury... this has been accumulating over a period of 1-2yrs. its just frustrating because if i had an off day, i could take it out at the dojo, now if i had an off day it gets bottled up and my fury is released on some poor soul like my dad or my sister and then depression sets in and then more tests need to be done then headaches come and i have to go into hospital...
  3. Thanks guys and gurls! i thinks the most frustrating part is that if they do the surgery, i can't go to nationals to support my dojo, and the vision loss makes things alot harder even though its just peripherial. and family are making it even harder by not wanting it being talked about.
  4. i'm going spare....i haven't even been able to do my katas 'tai chi' style because of a neurological condition....i have raised intracranial pressures and have had 2 lumbar punctures in the past 3wks... now they're thinking surgery and thats another 6mths on bloodthinners... i've gone from total badcore karate kid to nothing... i'd give a kidney, liver lobe, spline and bone marrow to get out on the floor again...... i am just so darn frustrated...and worst off is i'm afraid because i can't practice my katas...i'll forget them
  5. i call it slammin sam!! mine fought back one day and got my nose, guess my block wasn't quick enough
  6. shihan takahashi is an 8th dan OAM and absolutely hilarious!!! i've had 3 gradings with him and although awkward as i'm generally the only female grading he can see how awkward i feel and says 'say kiyai!' so i say it he's like 'no no no, spirit feeling now say kiyai' he's like my own little mr.miyagi....i told him that and he grinned, but i get hit alot with his stick he's always like 'make longer stance rhi' hes very encougraging, especially since he knows my limits and me being an epileptic (not always there in the brain)
  7. takahashi brings back belts for us with our name, system and a parchment for framing, hand written by takahashi himself. we pay something like $US250 and it must be in US dollars. my dad gets his embroided belt in august!!
  8. No idea of your grade, but if you can see, try this. When it's your turn to attack, move from outside distance, in two beats. First by minuscule movement, then when you see a reaction, and can guess where they will be, move to where they are going. Don't hit anyone if you can do this, it's bad manners. Good luck. Btw, this is a technique to hone your "eye", you have to be especially good to make it work in real match. Shizentai, don't get me started about my daughter........ i am a green belt at the moment grading in august to blue. do you have a video or images of this so i can see how it's done and practice?
  9. i am over weight but thats a side effect of my meds. i wear a size 7 belt and the length is perfectomundo but am hopeing to lose about 40kgs
  10. i love ippon kihon kumite! for that exact reason, try the best block that works for me and hone it, plus it gives me a chance to practice other moves as well like nukite, yoko empi etc.
  11. nope, i take anything and face it, fear is what holds you back when learning, you cant progress without facing your fears.
  12. that'll learn yah!!!
  13. fro my understanding shotokan is the melding of both Shuri-te and Naha-te. shotokan foundered by GICHIN FUNAKOSHI in 1922 Naha-te foundered by Kanryo Higaonna (Higashionna was the original Okinawan pronunciation) in 1881 Shorin-Ryu foundered by Choshin Chibana in 1933 Shuri-te foundered by Sakukawa_Kanga pre WW2 Uechi-Ryu foundered by Kanbun_Uechi (date not available) Goju-Ryu foundered by Chojun Miyagi (date not available) Tomari-te (founder and date not available)
  14. What style do you train in? Traditional Shotokan What rank are you? 6th Kyu (Green Belt) How many day and times a day do you train? 4 days a week, 2 times a day. i've recently gone back after having lots of migraines and some other issues at the dojo...all is resolved. i could be a 5th kyu but because of the duration of time i was absent i didn't grade, will in august though along with the club comp.
  15. far out! i was complemented on my sparring by a black belt...i'm at that level but only a green belt, i can keep up and tag the best BB i've met, your heart and soul should go into the style you practice and not to see that would break my heart
  16. sometimes we just gotta drink a cup of concrete and let it set... i get paired with a girl i can't stand training with but i'm the only one who has enough patience to help her learn....granted she has disabilities but it's how she acts. i want to improve my karate but she is a person to so i help her. the kid you speak of is obviously arrogant and should receive some sort of official warning that if he doesn't pull his head in there will be disciplinary action taken
  17. shotokan (depending on where) is basically one hit to kill so unlike many other styles full on contact is not allowed. think of the paperwork! there are 26 kata and you only need 1 to defend yourself. remember, your sensei is still on his journey...you haven't even started it yet.
  18. i personally thought it was rubbish. i watched the juniors and part of the seniors and the only hint of shotokan was belt ranking style. because i practise TSKF, of course i expected differences but not to this extent..and as far as it being family friendly it was far from that. also the parents would just talk and talk and talk with the juniors i very politely told them to be quiet and allow their kids to train...probably over stepping the mark since its not my dojo but parents don't stick around and watch at our dojo so if they wanna watch, do it quietly. so im now named the girl who grew balls!!! technique wise i think its more TKD than anything and no effort is made to correct errors. but this is only a dojo near me and how i saw it after being trained by JKA students
  19. ok, i don't agree with numerous footface plantings but as an orange belt in TSKF i never got any guidance and had to figure it out for my self and ask questions, sometimes thats the way it goes, especially with a larger sized dojo.
  20. going to check it out on tuesday...they wear black gis!!! and this is the website..http://www.nationalkarate.com.au/
  21. one thing about karate: if your afraid to hurt someone then you shouldn't be doing it. i was told this by a well respected karateka and its what i live by. if the kid was dumb enough to move the kick bag then hes tough enough to suck up a kick or 5! at my dojo we have 8-10 year olds that in comps get kicked in the face and they get back up and take it over and over. this type of kid wont learn from mistakes and personally i dont think he should train if hes not willing to listen and learn.
  22. do you not practice jiyu ippon ? this is what you will be doing at the tournement for your grade. its from free stance.
  23. i don't pull my toes back at all on washi geri! my feet are naturally strong but i can't kick washi geri because of my hips so when i do do it i prefer to use the top of my foot.
  24. theres a zen do kai dojo near me as well.
  25. get your dad or older siblings (if you have them) to stand in front of you and punch Choku-zuki and never lift your eyes from them, you'll see a twitch or a blink when they punch which will give away when they're going to do it. try that
