  1. i don't think they'er to fussed in australia, for the comp i entered peeps had their ankles, wrists, shoulders, toes strapped with multiple layers
  2. so theres a zen do ryu dojo down the road from me and befor i go have a look, is there anyone on here that has/does practiced zen do ryu and can tell me anything about it and what to expect? i will still go to my other dojo but i feel i need another outlet for the rest of my energy that doesn't get used. i find i'm getting frustrated with the fact i get stuct with those that don't have a clue what they're doing and yet i can tag a black belt and wind a 2nd dan (i used a sweep and nukite) would just like to know more about it before i go. much appreciated guys, thanks.
  3. Heian shodan Heian nidan Heian sandan ** Tekki shodan Hangetsu and the 26th kata in TSKF...i'll be a green belt in august as i'll be missing my grading coz im going to melbourne. if only i could trade sandan for hangetsu for my grading kata, i don't even have to think about it
  4. its about technique for some of it. most of the bruises i get are because i may not be concentrating or have had a seizure during training and have had to do milisecond blocks, you get use to it and your body toughens to it, all it is is a tiny burst blood vessel nothing major
  5. yeah i know but 5 step sparring and 1 step sparring?? i'm more of a go get em' girl. sounds weird but i'm one of the most competitive females in my dojo at 7th kyu level..actually im the only female at 7th kyu level. and at one training night a black belt and myself sparred off against eachother...i copped her a beauty on the chin. one of the sempai's has said i have some of the fastest reflexes he's seen in a long time. nailed a cocky 2nd dan in the ribs 2weeks ago he wasn't very happy about that!
  6. so i'm getting here is that you're not sure if you could defend yourself if you were attacked am i right? if i'm right, easy a kazami to the person's jaw and run like bloody mary!!! i have only had to do this once in my life since starting karate and i to practice shotokan. i was on a train and a guy that i knew who was a known rapist was following me everywhere and right infront of the train security guard touched me so i broke his jaw and ran! i had already told the security guy the situation and he never stopped me!
  7. Pick a kata, any kata. Do it 10 times when you wake. Then at night about an hour from your bed time, do it again 10 times. In about 2 weeks, your legs will be strong enough for regular training. Your instructor will also be impressed with your progress. well if he/she has only had two training seshs, unless they're a fast learner heian Shodan won't have all movement's picked up in two lessons. and especially for an ungraded white belt (unless brickshooter comes from another style of course) let alone attempting to do Heian Sandan or bassai sho or Tekki shodan!!!! Brickshooter: my best advice would be to focus on Heian Shodan which is your grading kata (i train Tradition shotokan). this is a excellent demonstration of the kata from all angles and speeds as for basics kibadachi is really painful and i hate it but stand in that stance in your room and practice chudan and jodan punches at night. then when your legs get so unbearably painful stop go have a nice hot shower to relieve the tension in your muscles and go to bed. this is the technique that i used to strengthen my hamstrings as i use to wobble as well.i also do it for backstance. it sounds a little extreme but once you get past the initial pain factor your ok it's only the lactic acid build up in your muscles. you do get sore legs though and sleep helps but doing this is training your muscles just like training your brain to get in a pattern.
  8. yeah, will definitely be entering more comps. maybe nationals in a few years.
  9. for me, my focus comes from the type of week i've had. great week = stunning focus shi-ite week= equals stunning focus both for different reasons: 1. if i have a great week i have a great mental mind so i'm prepared for anything thrown at me and i do it with full gusto. 2. if i have a bad week i have so much to focus on like stance, executing my techniques correctly etc that i don't have time to think about how bad my week has been. i go full gusto at it and am 'in the zone' i train with black belts mostly and i have nailed Tekki Shodan perfectly on one of my worst days ever....then i don't remember how to do it because i was so focussed. after those days i'm so tired when i get home from training i just flop. so maybe just use the type of week you have.
  10. Thanks guys! i think the only thing i was disappointed in was Team Kata. But that was probaby because i'm an epileptic and i have a feeling i had a seizure. I kinda stood there and looked like a dickweed..bit embarassing more than disappointing coz i kinda just stood there for 10 seconds.
  11. Definately!!!! but i think i'll stick with Kumite in the future though and i've also figured out that i'm only 2 and a bit years off my black belt if all goes accordingly!!! I think now that i've got a taste there's no going back but before i even have a go at nationals i want to get to a better belt; blue or purple maybe even brown. that way i know i'm ready! i have a very competitive streak in me so it works well.
  12. so ladies and gents yesterday i had my first comp, albeit a interclub one and theres about 5 TSKF clubs in South australia. Anyway, i went in with the attitude of 'It doesn't matter if i don't place it's all about charater building and it's also about experience.' well was i surprised when i placed 3rd in the 10th-7th Kyu Open seniors Kata!!!!!! I hate Kata because i just don't do it well at all and trying to remember all the movements gets me baffled. then came team kata. no placing for that but it was definately an experience. Kumite was my last event for the day 10th-7th Kyu open seniors kumite 5 Step Sparring. i get up for my first round and the first round was a draw so we went again and that was a draw to but i got the point and won that round, sat out for the fight for 3rd and when the fight for 1st and 2nd was up it was the guy that i train with at the dojo and myself....at the end of that it was another draw but my partner won and i placed 2nd! it was amazing best experience of my life so far...next is to get the Dojo Kun tattooed on my arm!
  13. my friend in sydney is a wreastler and when she was down in adelaide we had a play fight i got her good, she was also a BB so it was a good fight.
  14. whoah! new discovery *hehehehehe*
  15. fave combo for kumite: attacking kazami, gi acke zuki, mai washa geri, shiri geri Defense: agi uke, gidambri, sotsu uki

  17. in traditional shotokan karate, there is no grappling.
  18. so i had my 2nd shihan grading last night and passed. i'm now one dojo grading away from orange i'm just pumped i made it to yellow. there have been times i wanted to chuck it in soooo much because i wasnt grasping concepts but i looked around and though ' hang on everyone here was like me at some point'

  20. you should feel proud to wear a black belt with your name on it, dont let it gather dust. our black belts are bought over from japan by shihan takahashi when the 6mths is up.
  21. haha i have collapsed arches coz of flat feet, an i to struggle with this stance
  22. well my yellow belt grading is 3weeks away and we spent 6hrs training on a saturday. i'm finally confident in heian nidan and know most of heian sandan. apparently shihan takahashi murdered the queensland 1st dans and put them through 3hrs of testing im glad i did the 6hrs he must have been in a bad mood.
  23. almost cotton yellow belt in shotokan, budo way
