I dont personally like the website, it reminds me too much of those bodybuilding scam sites from the layout, however the facility looks very swanky Like DWx says check it out and see if you like it, the logo reminds me of the Kobra-Kai from The Karate Kid so maybe thats where you remember it from If they're worth their salt they'll offer a free taster session, check them out and see what you think And welcome to KF!

I'm 5'9", it hasnt hampered me at all, i mean give or take 2 inches both ways and you have the average height of most males, i dont see as though it would pose a particular problem, we have a 5'4" guy in our dojo and he's one of the best fighters among us

do you tell people that you do martial arts
StrangeBacon replied to shotokan-ste's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I dont tell certain people, like i'll try to explain away alot of my bruises, mainly because people give me weird looks thinking i get enjoyment out of being hurt, to a certain extent i do, but because im always improving because of it, i see it as character building and a nessessary thing in martial arts. I'll tell friends and people who bring it up in conversation since they seem genuinely interested but usually back off alot of the in depth details and save those for closer friends and family Regarding the ninja costume, go for it i'd have jumped at the chance to go to a fancy dress as a ninja, best i could do was a pirate when i was 16 -
Since you're using the tricks tutorials site anyway, the videos dont seem to work, but type Jujimufu dynamic stretches into youtube and you should get a playlist of videos of him demoing all the stretches he talks about on the site with a few reps of each one. Hope this helps you

I feel honored that a discussion has been started from one of my Sensei's many quotes! Thank you Sensei8! I personally agree very strongly with this, i've studied many styles before my current one, however i have attained a black belt in only one. I have been asked many times if this bothers me or if it makes me feel less complete as a martial artist and everytime i answer no, the colour of my belt means little to me, it doesnt change the fact that i've had over half my life involved in the martial arts, and plan to attain my dan grades in this particular style having found it to suit me down to the ground, not only the style but the people involved in it. Its a crying shame but theres alot of people out there that concentrate so much on the destination they miss the journey there, i mean one of the best things about going abroad on holiday is the flight on the plane, but maybe thats just me

If you was to fight today?
StrangeBacon replied to Throwdown0850's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
We'll do a fair bit of training while yelling at each other and making agressive behavior so that if we did have to fight at a certain moment especially in a mugging the idea would be to be more used to that bodily reaction of freezing up when confronted with an attacker yelling at you and getting in your face, and being able to more effectively deal with that threat. -
Even if the broken finger doesnt stop them they're going to loosen the grip and give you some room to work with. Its similar with wrist locks, if you cant get the lock grab a thumb or pinky, and assuming the assailant isnt on any kind of pain supressing drugs its going to hurt a great deal, my sensei has dragged me around the dojo by my pinky before and i can tell you there's very little you can do when you're on your stomach at the mercy of someone else

karate girls with great show
StrangeBacon replied to shadowarrior's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Most of them are trained in martial arts as a base, some people just do the basic tricking, i saw one of Chloe Bruce's Team Fusion UK students at the Martial Arts Show in Birmingham, she was VERY good with a Bo Staff, not in the traditional fighting sense but very impessive nontheless -
I'm with Sensei8 on this one, wow....seriously braver man than me it probably turns out you'd have done more damage cutting your own foot open

karate girls with great show
StrangeBacon replied to shadowarrior's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
It does look a bit like XMA you're right, shes impressively flexible though, loved the scorpion kick in the middle -
The main thing seperating pro wrestlers with martial artists, is that wrestlers train mainly for showmanship, both men will help in a lift ect i can see where Sensei8 is coming from, by the same token i dont dispute the average MAist being "manhandled" but the OP mentioned 5th dan+ usually signifying a great deal of experience, and results will differ greatly depending on the type of training the MAist has undergone. MMA_Jim, you have some very valid points, but the wall of muscles arguments will only hold sway over an inexperienced MAist, no matter how much muscle you have your joints will be hard pressed to take the pressure of someone striking them with full force. It's not how much training you've had but the type like i said, wrestlers dont train with intent to harm whereas a self defence practitioner does just that and someone with Sensei8's experience isnt going to be a pushover for any man, its as much mental as it is physical, someone trained to defend themselves in potentially life threatening situations is a very dangerous opponant indeed.

Breaking up is hard to do...new style or not?
StrangeBacon replied to Spodo Komodo's topic in Karate
Sounds to me like he should pay more mind to his own training and give his peers the respect they deserve, you earned that belt in the first place, no one can realistically expect you to perform to the same standard instantly after such an injury, these things take time. Martial Arts above all else is a learning experience, you never stop learning no matter what grade you hold, and as long as you train hard and give it your all you cant ask for any more than that -
The legendary Jujimufu!

I generally call any instructor "Sen" its well accepted in our style and it feels odd calling them by their names, if there's more than one in the room or im trying to get ones attention i'll say ____-san.

mixing shotokan with street fighting for protection..
StrangeBacon replied to mbt9000's topic in Karate
This. Also be wary of the "kill or disable" statements, theres alot of grey areas in the law and level of acceptable forces comes into it alot. However your training seems to suit you and the way you talk you seem to like it and have clicked with him, regarding the styles and which is best alot of it is going to depend on the individual, we can all do alot of training but how each person reacts to a given situation is always going to be different. The type of training you're doing will certainly make you hardy if nothing else! keep at it! -
Breaking up is hard to do...new style or not?
StrangeBacon replied to Spodo Komodo's topic in Karate
I was out for about 18 months, just ringing my sensei and telling him i was still alive was possibly the most nerve wracking thing i've done since i had made these weird things up in my head he'd be angry with me for just leaving (it was a money issue and having moved house) i'd realised this was a stupid reason since he'd ripped up one of my payments once to show how little the money ment to him. The thing im trying to get across is you'll feel like you let them down and that you needed to maintain a certain level to fit in again, but as previous people have mentioned as a shodan you'll have had the time to hopefully bond with these people and they wont turn you away as easily as that, neither should they a fresh kohai, part of the martial arts that first attracted me was how friendly and open minded everyone was. If you're thinking about this then these people obviously mean a great deal to you, go back and make up the time, you wont regret it -
I've always been taught to turn the head and change the focal point before the legs move "still when moving, moving when still" ect not only because it looks better when the kata is performed but also as many have said, i'd much rather be looking at the person attacking me. Theres also the not so obvious in that looking directly at your attacker in the eyes is psychological fighting in a sense, the eyes give alot away, one thing that always struck me about my sensei was that he could always discourage you with his laser like focus almost making you feel like you had already lost before you'd even made a move.

Passing The Applegate Test!
StrangeBacon replied to sensei8's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Personally having a kickboxing background before i started studying karate, i feel alot more comfortable with kicks, i've got long flexible legs and have been in situations where i've had to stop someone hurting me, one of which was resolved with a mae geri to the lower abdomen and the other with a kakato geri to the shin. As to whether those would have been the best techniques to use, i dont know, they're just what came out and what felt right, the mae geri to me is a very comfortable kick and easy to fire off nice and fast -
As a general rule stretch dynamically after a warm up doing moves such as front and side lifts as well as trunk rotations. Avoid static stretching until the end unless its static active stretching (holding a fully extended kick for a period for example) not that it can make you looser but they actually have a calming effect on the body, not the desired feeling before a good workout or training session. Maintaining flexibility usually only requires an hour or so per week (spread out) whereas gaining requires a flexibility specific program and a good 5-6 hours per week to advance at a solid rate. Hope this helps
