I will not be frequenting this forum any more. I feel that the discussions are petty, unintelligent, and uninformative. I need a forum where I can ask a question and people will answer it, not one where it will turn into "you should do Muay Thai". I quite frankly am sick of the members who post the same thing over and over again (BJJ/rules, kata is crap etc), but I am also sick of the comparative styles forum. This seems to be the place for someone who has no idea about the martial arts to ask if Muay Thai can beat Tae Kwon Do - and guess what, the loop returns (see previous sentence).

I have been told that we are moving on to me learning this Shihohai Kata because it is impressive if done correctly and therefore wins tournements.

Unfortunately, thats what happens in kata competitions nowadays - it depends on the kata, not the person.

No, might be, might not be. Politics has nothing to do with it. Providing they teach good material associations are irrelevant.

I too find eurpean swords fascinating. Personnally, I am a fan of the so called Victorian 'Gentleman' swords.

Unfortunately, I only have a french shortsword in my collection. Oh well....time will change that

I used to be a Shotokan man, and asked myself these questions many times. You have to bear in mind, however, that kata is just the building blocks of a fight, and should not be thought off as the *exact* techniques.

In Pinan Sandan (I did it as Heian), the opening manoeuvres can be thought of as many things - blocks against double punches (would the opponent juts stand there after you have blocked him?) - double arm break (maybe, but arms don't break easily, and chances are u can do as much damage to yourself as you do to the opponent)

I like to think of it as a hammerlock technique, with a headbutt to finish them off.

I can't help you with any of the other katas.

An ex-karateka/friend I knew took up Aikijutsu at a good club. I know its not the same as Jiu-Jitsu, but it might be what you are looking for.

But, being the blinkered type, I don't know much about other clubs in the area. Take a trip to 'Eddies' (Leeds Martial Arts shop) and have a look at the flyers. There are plenty of Jiu-jitsu clubs there.

But beware, better is the man who takes 2 years in an art than 6 months in 4

Does it concern me? To an extent yes. However, when I carry around my weapons, I usually have my karate bag inc. gi, obe, register, licence, induction manuals.........with me.

I think that that would make the cops believe I'm training with them.

out of curiousity, are there restrictions on martial arts equipment in england? weapons seem to be frowned on over there, and I was wondering what happens when you get pulled over, and have a staff in your car, or a sword and nunchaku in the boot?

Dunno, never had it happen to me. Can make an educated guess though

Quite ironically, a lad who attending my class yesterday asked these questions - and I had also asked they class if they knew what a manriki is.

He also practices Thai Boxing. Hm..........are u the same blokie?

If not then you can come and attend my classes in Leeds, if you are interested in Okinawan Kobudo.

For the prices, take a trip to 'Eddies' - Leeds Martial Art Shoppie Place. However, if you join my school they will be cheaper.

I train/teach Okinawan Kobudo (Matayoshi/Shinken lineage), and we just do weapons.

Some schools will teach weapons and call it their 'kobudo' syllabus.

1) get a good facial scrub (body shop) and use daily

 

2) Spend some money on a decent moisturiser such as Oil of Ulay etc.

 

3) Use a facial cleanser such as Oxy10 to remove spots

 

4) Smoke and drink less as this affects your skin too

Many many many Jiu-jitsu clubs teach weapons.

Problem is many of the schools think they are teaching 'real' nunchaku, yet decide to bounce the weapon of their own feet (!?!?!!?)

How about "Mr Reece and the Gentleman"

Oh wait I forgot, ure not called Mr Reece.......thats me. Oh well, back to the drawing board
