  1. Endurance. In a sport fight you need the gas to continue the fight. On the street you need the gas for the escape (outnumbered, cops, etc).
  2. When hiking, which involved a little climbing, have a light bruise on my ankle and have a blister on a big toe. Haven't gone out to the woods in a while.
  3. Actually having many small meals is more important for fat loss than you think. Yes having many meals will boost your metabolism, but it will also keep your body burning those calories. If you eat say, three meals a day, then your body has more time to convert calories to fat, than say six meals a day.
  4. Wrap hands and use gloves. I don't want to take the chance of down time. It doens't matter which gloves, but padding is great.
  5. The only people I have 'trouble' with are the ones that aren't in full control of their faculties. Talking them down is like speaking another language. I never have to practice this funny conflict resolution business. My advice, look big but not too big, tough but not too tough. You look like a challenge but not so much that their pride/ego makes you a target.
  6. Maybe physics is different in other countries... In my part of the woods velocity is displacement in a given time. Displacement is the change in position with a direction, basically a vector, which is why velocity can be represented by a vector. Vectors aren't solely used in math because displacement, velocity, acceleration, and many more, can all be represented by vectors. If went about applying physics to MA I might start at forces or energy, momentum, and impulses. If you want to hurt somebody you want to put a maximal force in the least time, without increasing momentum if possible. In english, you want to hit the punching bag as hard and quick as possible and having the bag bend instead of swing away.
  7. I suggest you do some searches on the subject. For one, strength can be broken down to maybe 8 sub categories, some of which include endurance, speed, power. You might want to check out books by Zatsiorsky, and Poliquin, and the latest edition of Supertraining.
  8. It's probably best that you take one week, every one to two months, to train light. It will give your body some time to recover, which is especially true when you lift weights and train. Just cut the workload in half, and don't eat like a pig.
  9. Exactly, her point was that most physics equations are based on velocity not speed.
  10. Sorry, I meant MT gym. But I haven't had any weight related injuries.
  11. $60 - $65 / month (Canadian) - Unlimited classes Mon - Sat. - Free weights available in the back (benches, power rack, heavy dbs, etc.) - If there isn't a class going on you can come in and do whatever, with a trainer most of the time. Gotta love my new gym.
  12. Nicely written. However for the average person I still believe that strength training to be more effective. Only when said person has reached a certain level of strength will dynamic strength training and plyometrics help them reach their next level.
  13. You forgot looks. That's important, right?
  14. Just changed gyms recently, and have to cut back on the weights to adjust to the heavier work load. Added neck training, more endurance core work, and tripled rope work. I feel like I'm going to tip over if I try to deadlift.
  15. Sweet! I have enough fries for a month now.
  16. About $65 a month for MT. About $70 a month for Karate. About $30 a month for the gym. All are go anytime, and the gym is never closed. When I 'finish' with karate I'll get some grappling in there, because if I add that now my GF will... well let's just say I won't smiling for a long time.
  17. Do a search for dynamic stretching.
  18. I don't even remember if I posted on this topic before, and my opinion is probably different. Anyway, anything you put into the olympics is going to become a sport and not traditional. TKD, Judo, Boxing, Wrestling, are all 'watered down' in the olympics.
  19. Somebody mentioned fries. Can I get fries? Fries? Oh yeah, can I learn to harness my ki into a deadly force that can knock people out from a distance? But can I get fries with that?
  20. If you opt for the weight training I suggest you do a full body routine each day, and not a split. It will help with regards to your MA training. Keep your reps in the 10-15 range for few months to learn the technique properly.
  21. Muscle imbalance can cause bad posture. Follow Rich's advice but remember to keep it balanced. ie. over developed abs and a weak back can lead to slouching forward.
  22. That leg and lower back work is all isometric though. IMO push-ups are the same as the bench press, neither is of huge importance to MA or MMA. I would still lean towards the bench press though, because you can get endurance work and technical work at the same time with a punching bag, or sparring, or pad drills, or...
  23. Rest, rest, and more rest for that sprained ankle. Don't spar unless it's in in a video game...
  24. So you want to lose 10 pounds of fat per month over then next three months. I would go to a local gym and get a physical assessment, and a personal trainer to show you the proper form. If they're good they'll talk about your eating habits as well. And if you're really interested in the MAs then just start ASAP. It will hurt at first, more than you might think, but your body will adapt in time. Just keep at it and the hard work will pay off.
