In that case it wouldn't be considered out of control if you have the same level of control during both emotions or all emotions. I have also seen on the net various sites praising positive anger and the advantages of using it, a good case is sensei8's son. You seem to have very good control over your emotions, but there are those who dont and I think there could be bad consequences if anger is used. I'm sure these people would know what their level of control is and wouldn't attempt to use anger in a dojo setting, but you never know By meanig hitting a wall, you dont mean punch a hole in it do you? Fixing holes is quite expensive

Thats true, but anger is a differant emotion from fear. I can only go by what I have read and i wasn't there when great masters did actually the things they did. Will be more mindful next time

sorry this is just a view from my own struggle to control my emotions. The level of control over emotions would definately vary from individual to individual. Would there be less chance of hitting a wall if you werent angry? bushido_man96 - you've got me thinking bout this one, i'll see if i can find some studies about anger rage and emotional control... I'm thinking back to past incidents where I have "raged" and caused damage to myself and the environment around me but I have never hurt anyone - could this be a certain level of control? hmmm very interesting.

I am a 6th kyu and have been training on and off for four years. I have already found the posts from other members very insightful on this forum and it is interesting to know some of the ranks of other members.

for kata, bunkai is an interesting thing. Only recently have I been realised that there are multitudes of bunkai applications for each move in kata. Maybe I wasn't thinking to deeply about it or just wasn't listening but it really opened my eyes when my senior instructor said for homework we were to come up with five unknown bunkai for our grading kata. A world of possibilities...

Grimmjow vs kurosaki ichigo in episodes 166 & 167 of bleach season 8. More sword play than real ma, but this fight is amazing for anime. There others but not sure if everyone likes anime. For movies I would have to say the fight between bruce lee and chuck norris in the coloseum, was that game of death?

Unfortunately a lot of powerful people around the world do not follow this simple saying. If only there was more accountability and less fear.

Channeling anger is a very dangerous prospect, especially if you dont have a good grip on anger control. It is healthy to let out your anger or it will engulf you and lead to rage. I have a problem with this myself and if i get angry it quickly spirals out of control... No one can control rage. I do feel though that anger has no place at all in the dojo for good or bad reasons due to angers ability to quickly spread to everyone around you through your actions. Higher energy levels and intensity can be achieved through application, technique and breathing. If the great masters can achieve mighty feats without anger, why cant we?

I totally agree with bushido_man 96, I have completed well over 300 reps over the years of one particular kata. But only in the last 30 times have begun to really learn about the various aspects - bunkai, the individual moves involved, breathing, stances... etc. On the more advanced katas the minimum time should be 6 months or at least 10 -20 times a week. But it can be said that sometimes, the more time spent doing kata can cause you to lose focus and just run by the numbers.

They will get theirs, and the pain they have inflicted on others will come back to them tenfold.

what kind of surface does everyone usaully run on? And does it make any difference to the effort put in and the time of the run?
-
wish i could run but my knees cant handle the impact, so i walk. I walk between 10-15 km's a day with a 6km uphill hike on the weekend.

You will get better, like everyone has said pick something you want to improve and focus on it. But better still pick an attacking move and a defensive move to focus on. As kumite contains both attack and defense searching for an opening is only half of the battle, not presnting an opening to your opponent is the other half. Also relax, work on movement - forward and backward, also side to side. Another good thing to do is spar against higher grades, I have found every fight to be a valuable learning experience

Did a class where we shadow boxed to techno, we had to throw combinations to the beat. that was the first time i had trained with music on, it was very interesting. I dont train by myself with music on, I find it distracting from the silence working out produces.

So why did you start training - what keeps you going?

Thanks all. Theres a big difference between seeing the path and walking it. But once you start walking the path anything is possible for anyone no matter who you are -
I'm a big fan of normal pushups but on fists instead of palms, but with one variation. When you lower yourself to the ground remain about two inches off the ground for a minute then push back up. Its a great exercise to strengthen your core muscles, after two weeks of this I was able to take a fairly hard mae geri to the midsection without flinching I've also started doing hindu pushups, very hard workout.

I'm very impressed with the breaking of burning bricks! Eyebrows are overrated anyway

Sorry to hear bout the incident Kez, its not pleasant, I have been king hit a few times before as well. It sounds you have a great dojo and a caring and understanding sensei, which would be the best place to get back on your feet. If you train hard, focus on your training you will not be able to think about what happened that night. your life may seem pretty dark right now, but martial arts will make it much more bearable.

push ups/press ups are great for your upper body muscles but also for joints and cartilage in your shoulders and spine. I know you can do push ups on your fists and fingertips with benefits for those immediate area's. Any other varients on the push up?

Another thing that has helped me is as soon as you get out of the shower and begin to dry yourself with the towel, stand on one leg and close your eyes. Swap legs as you dry differant body parts, just make sure you have enough room and are in private. Doing this each time you have a shower will ensure your balance gets better because you'll be doing it at least once a day and you have to put in no extra effort.

I am also 6' 4', I find that kicks are the best for attack, but you have to keep moving to counter smaller opponents trying to get in close. Remember you probably also have long arms as well so use that reach. Even if you punch a smaller opponent they can counter but will have to work harder from a distance. I am yet to find a simple way of stopping smaller opponents from getting in close apart from quick footwork backwards or sideways and that doesn't make for very good fights. If anyone has any suggestions for all of us tall people it would be much appreciated.

When I started karate I had a huge problem with alcohol and marajuana. While I was training I felt like i somehow overcome my addictions but as soon as class was over I would start drinking again or have a smoke. I struggled like this for four years training on and off and never really kicking the drinking. It was only in November last year where I made the decision after a few trips to AA to stop drinking to fous on living a more productive and purposeful life. I am now healthy, fit and feel really good about where I am headed. -
bastich the best way to regain flexibility is to do a light warm up (walk or light jog for bout 10 minutes), perform dynamic stretches on both legs to the front and then the side (10 to 20 each leg). Then do the normal static stretches (hamstring, calf, thigh, glutes), this is the part that will make you more flexible, but it will take time. Give yourself two to three months to see improvement, but I do this set of exercises twice a day with a walk to a park near my house, do my stretches then walk back home.

My school is uses the following belt ranks; White White w/yellow stripe Yellow Yellow w/Orange stripe Orange Green Blue Red Brown (1,2,3) Black provisioval - shodan-ho Black When I train at home I wear my original white belt, its four years old and it has never been washed. Looks a little like the colour of bleached bone. Thats after training outside most of the time, gonna take a long time to get to that dirty brown black colour!
