Today Sept. 2, 2002 is .... Labor Day, legal holiday celebrated on the first Monday in September in the United States, Puerto Rico, the Canal Zone, and the Virgin Islands. The celebration of Labor Day, in honor of the working class, was initiated in the U.S. in 1882 by the Knights of Labor, who held a large parade in New York City. In 1884 the group held a parade on the first Monday of September and passed a resolution to hold all future parades on that day and to designate the day as Labor Day. Subsequently other worker organizations began to agitate for state legislatures to declare the day a legal holiday. In March 1887, the first law to that effect was passed in Colorado, followed by New York, Massachusetts, and New Jersey. In 1894 the U.S. Congress made the day a legal holiday. Parades, and speeches by labor leaders and political figures, mark Labor Day celebrations. Labor Day is celebrated in Canada on the first Monday in September. The first parades and rallies to honor workers were held in 1872 in Ottawa and Toronto, and the September date was officially recognized by Parliament in 1894.

Help!!
KickChick replied to Kajukenbofighter's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
Well (someone I know will correct me if I'm wrong) ... Ninjutsu (martial art of the ninja)seems to be a mostly striking art with some takedowns and "secret moves" whereas Jiu-Jitsu practitioners practice striking along with choke holds, joint locks, and throws. Seems capoeira is the martial art that goes well with "breakdancing". -

Prevention of Long term injury to joints
KickChick replied to Eye of the Tiger's topic in Health and Fitness
It is a common practice in most hard style martial arts to fully extend the leg in a snapping motion while executing front kicks. This causes a couple of problems. The first being that it will eventually wear out the knee joint. It may even cause an immediate hyperextension of the knee. The other problem is that it will generally pull the hamstring. This can be very painful and will also keep you from training. First rule. When your foot leaves the ground it pushes. You will want to pull your kicks but really they must be pushed. Concentrate on using your calf muscle as your foot leaves the ground. Your toes should give a final push also. This will tuck the lower leg in nice and tight which will allow the kick to snap out on execution. Second. The knee must continue to rise throughout the kick. If the knee stops it will hyperextend, causing problems. If the knee were to straighten completely as the kick rises, this is called ballistic motion. It pulls against the hamstring and could cause injury. However if the knee continues to rise throughout the motion of the kick and never goes more than 3/4 extension, the knee and hamstring will not be in jeopordy. The other benefit is that to keep the knee rising you must use the supporting leg. The supporting leg must be slightly bent to allow the hips to rock into the kick. This will focus on the thigh and calf muscle of the supporting leg. -

True, Matt is a BIG man... not bodybuilding huge... but a solid man with muscles. ....there are "pumped" bulky muscles, such as a bodybuilders which are created through a process called sacroplasmic hypertrophy. Muscles such as those of Furey who does more functional training get stronger through myofibrillar hypertrophy or actual muscular fiber growth. I believe you bulk up more by adding more than your bodyweight with actual weights for resistance which mobilizes more muscle mass ... just try doing those hindu squats with added weights if you really want to bulk up more.

EndZone Freestyle Fighting System
KickChick replied to EndZone Freestylist's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Welcome to KarateForums ... very interesting ecclectic style this "endzone freestyle fighting system"... do you have any "formal" martial art training in any of those disciplines ... just wondering. Is it just you and this instructor training together or is there a "place" you train. How long have you both been "developing" this fighting style blend and have you found any outside interest from individuals wanting to train in this new system. -
NOPE .... "You can bodybuild without adding bulk .... as in Furey's Combat Conditioning .... yes, bodybuild using your body... no weight except bodyweight!
-
.... have a shot??? They are going to win the World Series in 2002! (... hopefully I can refer back to this post in a few to say I told you so! )
-
The whole theory behind Matt's Combat Conditioning is bodyweight conditioning and muscular endurance! Not just calisthenics ... they are body weight exercises that make the body more efficient and strong without getting bulky. You're confused I'm afraid ... you can build the body in many ways. Matt's combat conditioning is bodybuilding .... plain and simple really without conventional "weights" providing only the weight of one's own body to achieve muscular endurance, strength and providing the same benefits of fat loss.

thought I'd share this .... do you find the humor in it?? Since September 11, 2001, Americans have come together as never before in our generation. We have banded together to overcome tremendous adversity. We have weathered direct attacks on our own soil, wars overseas, corporate scandal, layoffs, unemployment, stock price plunges, droughts, fires, and a myriad economic and physical disasters both great and small. But now, we must come together once again to overcome our greatest challenge yet. Hundreds of Major League Baseball players in our very own nation are living at, just below, or in most cases far above the seven-figure salary level. And, as if that weren't bad enough, they could be deprived of their life-giving pay for several months, possibly longer, as a result of the upcoming strike situation. But you can help! For only $20,835 a month, about $694.50 a day (that's less than the cost of a large screen projection TV) you can help a MLB player remain economically viable during his time of need. This contribution by no means solves the problem as it barely covers the annual minimum salary, but it's a start, and every little bit will help! Although $700 may not seem like a lot of money to you, to a baseball player it could mean the difference between spending the strike golfing in Florida or on a Mediterranean cruise. For you, seven hundred dollars is nothing more than a month's rent, half a mortgage payment, two unemployment checks, or a month of medical insurance with COBRA, but to a baseball player, $700 will partially replace his daily salary. Your commitment of less than $700 a day will enable a player to buy that home entertainment center, trade in the year-old Lexus for a new Ferrari, or enjoy a weekend in Rio. HOW WILL I KNOW I'M HELPING? Each month, you will receive a complete financial report on the player you sponsor. Detailed information about his stocks, bonds, 401(k), real estate, and other investment holdings will be mailed to your home. Plus, upon signing up for this program, you will receive an unsigned photo of the player lounging during the strike on a beach somewhere in the Caribbean (for a signed photo, please include an additional $150). Put the photo on your refrigerator to remind you of other peoples' suffering. HOW WILL HE KNOW I'M HELPING? Your MLB player will be told that he has a SPECIAL FRIEND who just wants to help in a time of need. Although the player won't know your name, he will be able to make collect calls to your home via a special operator in case additional funds are needed for unforeseen expenses. YES, I WANT TO HELP! I would like to sponsor a striking MLB player. My preference is checked below: [ ] Infielder [ ] Outfielder [ ] Starting Pitcher [ ] Ace Pitcher [ ] Entire team (Please call our 900 number to ask for the cost of aspecific team - $10 per minute) [ ] Alex Rodriguez (Higher cost: $60,000 per day) Please charge the account listed below $694.50 per day for the player for the duration of the strike. Please send me a picture of the player I have sponsored, along with an Alex Rodriguez 2001 Income Statement and my very own Donald Fehr MLB Players Union pin to wear proudly on my hat (include $80for hat). Glad to see you took my advice regarding Furey's Combat Conditioning http://www.karateforums.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=3147&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=15 View other posts in this thread too about bodybuilding without weights. I have been doing the hindu push ups and squats and let me tell you what awesome conditioning exercises to add to your current routines. Watch out for the squats (you may not be able to walk up and downstairs if you do too many at first)... Start with 25 ea. and increase from there. My workouts change according to my goals at the time (yours should also!). Right now I'm training for my next dan. Every morning 5 minutes of slow static stretches, then 10 min dynamic stretches, 5 min of static again afterward. (3 days a week) Ab work (crunches assorted i.e. crossovers, obliques).... pushups, squats. ... some plyometrics on occasion Freeweights to work triceps/biceps, bench press and leg lifts Heavy bag drills (punches/kicks) I'm working on 360 back kicks and 360 rounds at the moment. Advanced kick practice .... switch kicks, 540's, jump round/hooks and various triples (Everday) Forms practice. Over and Over and Over!!!! (Kwang Gae/Po-Eun/Gae Bek)

... I believe you did more than enough in doing this for the guy. As a beginner I would have suggested to him that he needs formal training before he can train informally with the likes of you and your mates .... just for his "safety", mind you .... has you come off looking like the good guy that you are ... (... and not nasty at all! ) Doesn't sound like he's truly serious any way so spend no time worrying about him.

What's the scope on the I.T.F?
KickChick replied to koreantiger81's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Those are alot of bb topics to read thru in order to extract just what is happening with the future of the ITF. Here is RussellMacLellan (current Pres. of ITF) latest letter ... http://www.itf-generalchoi.com/news/letter_president.htm But what I will do is briefly quote one of the posters there who seemed to have a handle on the current political agenda of the ITF. I hope he doesn't mind me quoting him! Quoting Chris Reid (ITF bb member): "People want the ITF for themselves. The membership of the ITF had sweeping support for Master Choi as the next President; indeed General Choi had publicly stated that his son was the only man for the job. We all had a positive outlook for the future beyond the life of our founder. We were happy...right? Well how did the other people feel who wanted the ITF for themselves, how did they feel when they realized that at 48, Master Choi would likely serve a very long term which would mean their patience would never pay off. Furthermore, Master Choi had already told these people that things would change and they had better shape up, no more special favours, such as being able to obtain an 3rd Dan ITF Certificate for a 12 year old, no more cooking the books, no more wasting ITF money on parties for friends. Things were going to change for these guys and they better get ready to adjust to life as a member and nothing more. They did not like that. These people went on a seek and destroy mission, they would rather see the ITF in splinters if it meant they could control a small part of it. They turned General Choi against his son, they broke rules, manipulated the constitution, overturned a legal election and tried to silence people who tried to speak against their actions by among other things, trying to shut the ITF bb down, forbidding people from associating with others and discrediting those who would not follow them. They abused the trust of their own students by lying to them and convincing them to stand up and defend things they knew to be lies." "They overturned the election out of respect for General Choi. They said General Choi does not want to retire. They said General Choi is the only one who can unify Taekwon-Do and high-level talks were taking place that he must be a part of. General Choi has died. General Choi made a final wish for Chang Ung to be his successor and to carry on his work. Chang Ung accepted and has pursued talks with Kim Un Young, and now this person who I am ashamed to say is a former Canadian politician is politely saying, "you can't do that General Choi". Well Russ, it was fine before what's the problem now. You called us disloyal for refusing to follow General Choi's wishes (or at least what you and your comrades claimed to be his wishes). Are you prepared to now admit you are just as disloyal? We chose to fight for the rights of our members and ensure the Constitution would be upheld and Master Choi would indeed be the next President. Now you seek to try and do the same thing but, Master Choi is conveniently out of the way for you now. Good plan, too bad more time didn't pass so people could forget about what you and your buddies have been saying." "The only legally elected successor is Master Choi Jung Hwa. I will not blame Russell MacLellan, I will not blame Tom MacCallum, Phap Lu or any of the rest of them. They are only human and they crave power and prestige. I blame the members who allow this to happen. I blame the members who support these men and stand up and defend them and their actions. Do you people have no sense of justice? The only legally elected successor is Master Choi Jung Hwa. Everyone in the ITF has two choices. Follow General Choi's wishes no matter what they are, or follow the Constitution and observe Master Choi as the President of the ITF. Get rid of all the power mongers who seek the ITF for themselves. If they get away with it, it's your (ITF members) fault and it will be you, not them that lead to the downfall of the ITF." "It's time to take charge and do the right thing. If you don't like things the way they are, then join the process and change things from within. That's democracy." -
Never fear ... KickChick will resurrect what Tobias has single handedly put to rest Here is how you can give your foot the finger if you are recovering from an injured Achilles! Well actually I cam across these massage exercises to increase bloodflow to the Achillies to speed healing. Place your thumb directuly on the tender area and firmly rub back and forth horizontally , perpendicularly to the tendon. Do it hard enough that you feel a little discomfort but not pain. Do this for 3-4 min. 3-4 times a week. If the tenderness is along the side of the tendon press a thumb and index finger on the spot and repeatedly push the skin about a half inch forward toward your shin. Don't just slide the fingers over the skin. If it hurts where the tendon meets the heel, use your index finger to massage the point. To prevent soreness, stretch regularly. Stand on one foot on a step, your heel hanging off, and slowly lower the heel until you feel the stretch. Hold for 30 sec.s and repeat 5 times with each foot.
