Stay healthy enough to continue to train. I'm looking to add some ground fighting. Want to spar more, perhaps spend some time boxing. Help instruct at my dojo. Compete in 6 or more tournaments (hopefully win or place in them). Make 1st kyu. Improve defense, combinations, flexibility, power, speed and accuracy.

New Years M.A. Goals
quinteros1963 replied to quinteros1963's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Wow I can't believe a year is past already! Lets see, I have (1)continued to train (2)practiced kata and technique, (3)improved. Perhaps I'll make first kyu this year. That was an ambitious goal. Well this year I'll hope to do the same. In addition, I want to win some tournaments and pick up on some full contact sparring. -
Your instructor knows enough if he knows more than you. Learn what you can from him and if you get to a point where he can not teach you anything else, then I would consider someone new. However keep in mind as you are growing so will he, so will you ever catch up? Lets continue to train!

I will be testing for new rank next month. It seems that a Brown Belt will be around my waist for ever. If I pass I'll have to wait a year before I can test for 1st dan in 2012. I'm a member of an association where only a few instructors are able to award Dan rankings. I know, be patient... I will. Any way I'm excited to be up for the next rank.

I say its better than not training at all!

I'd like to but I can't see paying 150-200 dollars on a gi, when I can get a 100% cotton 12 or 14 oz gi for $75.

Thanks, I will think of something else to do for the kids. Karate seems like too much trouble in a school setting.

My instructor has indicated that he would be able to help, but has a fulltime job in addition to teaching at his dojo. The program would be after school (3:30) which would cause problems for folks with a 9 to 5. I know it would be a huge undertaking, but I want to do something for the kids. I have coached on the Varsity level, perhaps I can start some other sports club or something. Karate Club would be awesome though! Thanks for the comments, keep them coming!

What do you think of a brown belt volunteering teaching martial arts? I am thinking of starting a karate club at my school. I have many kids that would benefit from it, but could not afford to pay for classes. I may be able to tie the club to behavior modification and recieve grant funding for uniforms.

I work in a school, that has a lack of resources for extra curricular activities. Many of the students and staff members recognize the importance of having activities for our kids. After several years of training I know the benefits of karate. I also know of a number of students that need the discipline. Thus, I'm considering teaching karate to interested students. In effect starting a "karate Club" at our school. I may even be able to obtain grant money to cover the cost of uniforms for the kids. No, I am not a black belt, but would love to share what I do know with needy students (for free). What do you think?

Don't forget about Frank Mir and Chuck Liddell, they are both Karate ka as well. To be a success in MMA means to be well rounded, so please note that none of those guys are just one style. Machida is a blackbelt in karate and BJJ. MMA mean mixed martial arts!!! On the shirts: They just show that you are a fan of the sport. I have a few MMA and Everlast shirts, does that send the message that I am a born killer? I think it shows that I have an interest in the sport. How many of you own some sort of NFL,NHL,NBA or MLB gear? Does that say any thing other than I like this or that team? I think we are looking to far into the shirt issue.

Budomas is a good new company. -
I don't understand why people talk about Silva. He is a fighter, why would he engage a BJJ guy (5X world champ) on the ground? You take away your opponents best weapon, which he did. So he toyed with the guy, so he stayed away from him when he had the fight in the bag. Was it fun to watch? No not at all but he did what he needed to do to win. The bottom line is that he is the best fighter in the UFC, and for some reason many can't stand the guy. BTW those were not his latest actions. In his last fight vs Sonnen you will see him kneel and bow to his last opponent (nothing but respect). I am honestly starting to think that some hate the guy because as of late he has been somewhat untouchable. I think he is great and will continue to support him.

IF you are looking for middle weight cotton/poly gi, I would suggest Karate Depot - $30 (I have one and its a good value) If you want a 100% cotton I would suggest budomas.com, the have an awsome gi for under $60 that would cost near 100 or more on other sites(I also have 2 of these and I love them).

They are fighting in a sport that Corture has been in for a while so common sense says to go with Randy. Its his sport, how do you bet against him? He better get to the ground quick or else he will get knocked out. -

Mike Tyson, at 5'11" took on the best in the world in his prime. Many of whom were 3 to five inches taller. You just need to know how to fight within your body. Are going to fight the same way as a 6'2" guy? Probably not as you may have different skill sets due to size. Make it happen, I'm sure you will do well.
