  1. Good call - for sure visable. Good movie too!! I might have to rewatch that one.
  2. Yea thats a pretty good one too. Amazing how much pop some of these guys are getting out of this kata. I always thought that Tekki 3 looked the coolest. I should try and find a quick snappy one of that.
  3. Now this is poor quality but I think much stronger looking even from smaller man. Also can you believe 1924: For fun to check this one, I havent seen it done like this before. Its almost like he is slapping around a bullwhip of ki: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_DEVYxsihlE
  4. Here we go:
  5. I knew that would spark something. Yea Itosu changed Naihanchi. He broke it into three parts. So those that call it that still should probably still being doing it the old way as one kata. Most Okis I believe opted to keep the old way and called it Naihanchi. That link is the same as we pratice it but we are faster and deeper in stance. Which is our Tekki 1. Thats not the original old way Naihanchi. The video I saw from like a 50s Oki master, along with a local shorin guy do it different from that, they had a couple different moves and it was done really slowly, upright and choppy. Real weak looking. If I had to describe it Id say it was like mixing our Tekki 1 and 3 together from sort of a natural stance with a kinna rocking slowly pace.
  6. Okinawan? Wouldn't that make it Naihanchi??? Duh - haha - We call it Tekki though so Im gonna say Tekki. I suppose I could also say that its a much improved form of naihanchi thus is superior and again would be referred to as Tekki not Naihanchi. I will also say that Funikoshi changed the name but Ankō Itosu is credited with changing the kata. So no mainland arguements here. So prolly more accurate to say naihanchi=old way, and Tekki=new way. After viewing a master and a local Shorin Ryu guy do naihanchi I much prefer the new version. The old way looks funny and weak!
  7. You guys rocked it!! Nice!! Nice to see how cool it looks to throw some judo in.
  8. Tekki for all okinawan styles!!
  9. It’s funny how people respond. That’s assumptive and silence is your enemy. Adding to intrigue we are both green belts and adults. Also from what he said my assessment was dead on! Please, not to be a jerk but people please pay attention and read the post. This is a sequence in which we are forced to leave our hand out as part of a simulated kumite. This is the only reason why I complain. Its not getting hit it’s getting hit while defenselessly holding the arm out that got me. This is not semi or free kumite! For those that don’t know what kumite means it means sparring. Its an attack then a block and counter. It’s a stiff forced set of movements for testing. Also I had addressed him twice on his contact level. There wasn’t a silence or a lack of non verbal communication. Updates - he has come to class once since that I attended. We didn’t have to do kumite but we practiced certain moves which lent well to my skills. The teacher that day one of the three we have applauded my skill and I think it sort of changed his opinion of me. I haven’t seen him since. Also, to add, I returned after like a 7 years absence to train with a different dojo. I think he felt like I was on outsider and sort of felt like he was ahead of me even though I was present at his rank exam which placed him at my level and a black belt told him that I was still considered his sempi. This was also like 5 months before the issue started occurring. Also I asked one of the sensei’s and not my favorite one about it and he said suck it up. It only happens every so often anyways. Even though that was a jerk thing to say it’s really true. We are learning to fight and getting some bruises does come with the territory!
  10. Anybody have any experience with these? I have seen them at a couple places now and I know the judo guys love their mizuno gi so Im wondering if their karate gi is top notch too?
  11. That’s true Funakoshi did train Tekki for like ten years straight or something like that. What doesn’t make sense about it is that back then they mostly trained the kata, as they weren’t allowed to train out in the open so kihon wasn’t really done - only kata in secrecy. Also kumite didn’t come along until later with Japanese influence. So seems kinna silly that they only had the one kata they trained. Lore does dictate that Tekki was the only original Okinawan kata though. So I guess I dunno.
  12. Thats not fact. Masters had to hand them down based on memory. Had to practice them. For a practioner its probably good to pick five and master them. For style it makes sense to have more for depth, choice and variety of the style.
  13. Also above is wrong. Heavier gis will shrink more than lightweight ones.
  14. Lunges and jump roping.
  15. That link doesnt work??
  16. You want a good tournament cut gi. This typically means the legs and arms are shorter and no need to tailor them. You will have study size charts and ask questions. Your also sorty short for you weight so that might be an issue. Size 6 will be too big. Go size 5 in tourny cut.
  17. Try juka.com They have a 10oz dragon tournament cut gi thats really good quality -actually like a 12oz - good snap. Its the same thing as the tokon spirit. Or kiintl.com try their mugen black label 12oz tournament gi. Both are quality cotton canvas qis which is what you want. The dragons run tighter in the chest that the mugen and the mugen comes in half sizes. So get a half size smaller in the mugen than what you would get in the dragon. They are both only $70 bones! People always talk about heavier gis being hotter. I dont understand this as hard pratice will make you hot either way! The difference is that with a good gi it will soak all the sweat up and it wont stick to you. Get a good 12oz cotton canvas gi and you will be happy for years.
  18. I think im going to just tell him to lay off if it happends again. I really cant get by the wuss feeling of telling the instructors. We are both adults. We practice for about the point of contact - usually were you can feel the light snap of contact but not like this were it hurts the next day. I think he could tell I was bothered - I shook my hand and my head and gave a direct "that was uncalled for" stare. So hopefully he just adjusts and dials it back on his own.
  19. Tekki Bassai Dai Kanku Dai Jion Gankaku Five katas dont really make sense though. I think Funakoshi's orignal 15 kata syllibus is what makes the most sense and what Im going to adhear to.
  20. Try https://www.juka.com - They 10oz tournament cut dragon brand gi is top notch. Jacket is longer and shouldnt have to cut arms down. Its the same cut as the germany kamikaze europe cut which they actually make. However its mucho el cheaper. Just ask for jacket lengths and or check their size charts.
  21. I have this guy I train with who I think is intimidated by me. This makes him try and chop wood with me when we kumite. Im not sure if since we are both apt that he feels he should push it but I personally feel that the contact should remain snappy and more focused on techniqe than the idea of chopping wood and trying to break the guys arm. How should I handle this. A while ago I called him out and he just kinna disgruntly took the advice. He then was gone for a while and now he is back and is still doing it. Should I escale it and try to hit him more full speed really hard? Its a crappy thing cause I feel if I say something Ill look weak. However I dont wanna really crack him back as to cause a scene and make myself look bad that way. Any ideas?
  22. They were sorta upper lower level corner seats. I think we were maybe 30-40 feet from ring. Its expensive! They now hold the record for the most cheese pulled in on an event at the place it was held here.
  23. I got hooked up by the military but the ticks were like 400-600 I think.
  24. Hey Just thought Id brag alittle. Went to Ufc 87 yesterday. Got a pic with Dana White. Also got a pic with rising star Lyoto Machida and got his autograph. Yea sweet I know. Rock on!
