  1. 10/7 2 hours on and off free roll with some great friends of mine from my old gym.
  2. xo, how did you like the first Gracie lesson? 10/6 Drilled over the week's material from top of turtle. 30 min free roll, focused on the material from the week. I have a Peruvian necktie that is getting better. 30 m in free roll working with fighter
  3. Up beat is fine sparring. Or conditioning. Classic rock works best for me. For rolling, I really prefer something laid back.
  4. 10/4 90 min of time helping prep fighters for this months fight. Gave feeds for half guard work and live back. Drilled clinch breaks to combo work. Worked on RNC variant. 20 min free roll.
  5. 10/3 Attacks from top of turtle. Two variants of taking back and bow and arrow chokes. Anaconda variant w gi. 45 min free roll. No gi time helping one of our fighters. Worked on peruvian neck time from Monday night for my own part.
  6. I'll second others. Two decades is quite a bit of time for a fad to run. You have to remember that it's a combat art designed for a narrow set of parameters where weapons aren't allowed. It'd be a waste of training time for them to worry about it. As for battlefield arts already having what MMA currently has I disagree. Regardless of the theory behind several arts, you didn't see any of them do well in early UFCs. Zip. No traditional "battlefield art" despite it's claims of supremacy in a single range or those claiming "grappling" as part of their art managed to come away well represented. Some of this has to do with training methods. I've argued this before (respectfully) that most trad arts are behind (or were) the curve compared to the direction that MMA took with it's very high value on live training. So many battlefield dirivitive systems lack the level of live training associated with MMA gyms. This makes a difference. MMA, fad or system, probably has it's biggest, lasting influence in the realm of martial arts in this aspect.
  7. 10/1 Drilled over choke from single leg. Moved into anaconda choke and finished with Peruvian necktie. 45 min free roll.
  8. That goes on for a year or so, no worries It's about that long until you've gotten enough live reps that you actually feel like you have the answers. Then something really weird will happen and you'll think you're back at square one.
  9. 9/30 Worked clinch breaking and body shots. Moved in to positional free roll with strikes. Free roll, no gi. 60 min total.
  10. My opinion, for what it's worth, leans to the positive; however, there are some common themes to overcome making the jump. Wrestlers have some great things going for them going in, like you mention, the heavy top game, tight side control, ect. Add to that excellent takedowns and an intrinsic "feel" for the ground and you've got great base. They do tend to be more explosive, but they also have great technique and movement within their sphere. On the downside, they often (generalizing only) leave their arms and neck extended in bad spots and are less than comfortable working outside their comfort zone. If you can't get them to break this, you end up with the guy waiting to get his blue belt, who can wrestle with the purples easily enough from top, but has no guard game of which to speak. It can hinder growth in that area. But remember, we're just generalizing here, there are also wrestlers who don't bring the attributes listed above as well.
  11. 9/26 Drilled hip toss variants all night. Finished with arm bar from side mount. 60 min free roll. Half or so spent with fighters no gi.
  12. Been there as well. Does it happen, sure, but I also agree it should not be a routine occurrence. It should certainly never be a goal of a workout.
  13. 9/24 Drilled north south choke, then variant with gi. 30 min free roll. No gi time with fighters.
  14. First up, good luck and keep us posted. Next, I'm all about winding down the week prior to an event. Your last hard session should be 7 days out or so, give or take. After that, it's light review and active rest days. Gradings aren't bad since you're not working at making weight while you're trying to recover. Relax, do mental review, and light test-specific work. Good luck!

  16. 9/21 Drilled escape from the scarf. Rolling to leg choke, then upa to arm bar, and finally out the back door. Drilled with one of the fighters giving bottom half for 20. 20 more min free roll.
