  1. just want to add as well using a light set of weights to your regime and as someone mention a bicycle inner tube or if you can get the large store bought bands.
  2. No, we do not recognize Master Ueza. being with the IWKA we follow Master Kichiro Shimabuku and Hanshi Duessell along with my kioshi. Like I said cause of the different associations theres alot of different stories on who got what and so on. I go by what master kichiro says since he is the son of Tatsou and would know who was the last to train under his father. I'll have to get back to you on that kuma. my feelings towards isshinryu is great and to put down in words is tough.
  3. thats cool kuma. he's a very intelligent man and strong for someone of his age. his passion for isshinryu is so strong im glad to be part of his history. my kyoshi lives in NJ and if it wasnt for him I would never have really known hanshi duessell. The both of them are very admirable men for the art.
  4. no prob, its my observation of studying/teaching all this time. when you mix in the different associations under one roof you get alot of mixed feelings and well resentment cause they think they where taught right. But I have had the opportunity to talk to master kichiro the last time i went to a world tournament for iwka and found there is still some resentment within the family when his father died on who shouldve had the style granted to them. and PS1 you are correct. our kumite is straight forward and direct.
  5. well being a practioner of isshinryu for almost 30 yrs i attest to what I know. Hanshi Duessell was the last person to study under Master Tatsou Shimabuku. Others may say different but Kichiro has confirmed it. The style was not designed with americans in mind. Tatsou was developing the style during WWII. He felt the vertical punch to be stronger along with blocking with the muscle part of ones arm. The major problem we have with isshinryu is all the associations with it. Im with the IWKA so I follow Hanshi Duessell and Master Kichiro Shimabuku. I could go into the belt thing but it'll just stir up mixed feelings and people will think i'm bias'd. As for strength. its what I call medium. You have both hard and soft in it. but its how you do the applications to fully understand that its both but its also neither.
  6. when i use to help my friend rebuild those we found ours in junk yards. can try craigslist but ive never used it.
  7. thank you. i'm not posting as much unless its a topic i can truly discuss. working on my manual so I'll be popping in from time to time.
  8. hank williams sr. with jr and III. alive: Alestorm
  9. Moved back to KY closer to lexington. this feels more like home then NJ did. Did do some training back home, helped my kyoshi move the school even with my disability. Mainly been keeping tabs with patrick and anyone else im friends with on FB. but a buddy of mine has been nice enough to let me stay with him till i get back on my feet and find a place i can call home. been back to working on my "book" for isshinryu boy who wouldve thought writing a martial art book to be hard. well, skimming through a lot of posts and trying to get caught back up with ya all. OSU brian
  10. Thanks DWx, yeah i have to claim SSI (disability ) cause its already effecting my work. Plus with my back. I'm moving back home to NJ with the parents till I get back on my feet but least the dojo is there and kyoshi said to come in when i feel like a good day.
  11. yea doctor told me not to stop my MA just go at what i can do. No geogiant you didnt come off harsh hehe. for awhile I was actually thinking it was in my mind. Ive seen so many doctors and one actually told me that before I saw this one who is very understanding and compassionate.
  12. yeah, I know what you mean geogiant. Problem is if I dont take the medication my chances of an episode as I have come to call them are greater then if I dont take. So, if dont take its like 100% if I do take them its bout 50%. But, I will keep practicing untill i cant no more. I can do kata's as if I am doing Tai Chi which i do want to learn anyways so maybe I'll find someone up there that teaches it maybe. But will keep at isshinryu karate as its my love.
  13. Thanks christoh, but Some of that site is confusing to me. Probably cause I dont speak Italian (?). It is nice gear though but very hard to know what I'm reading.
  14. Went and saw my neurologists tues. He finally gave me a name of what I have: Functional/Dissociative Neurological Symptom. I always had these symptoms of blacking out, migraines, tremors, tunnel vision, sleeplessness and so on. At first I thought it was just you know part of growing up. I did just hit 40. So, what is the treatment? well thats the thing it can be controlled with drugs but they are not sure what really causes it because my tests can show normal. He wants me to participate in a clinical study with a colleuge of his to see if they can determine the cause. I'm still thinking bout it. What does that mean for practicing MA? well I asked the doctor and he doesnt want me to stop what I love doing but doing it at my own pace and restrictions. I can do Kata but if I feel dizzy I need to either sit or grab my cane. Weapons on the other hand I dont feel comfortable with cause when I go through a episode I will drop them. I cant go 110% like I use too. More at 50% now. If its all right patrick I'd like to post the link for anyone that might have questions on what I'm talking about its https://www.neurosymptoms.org We still are unsure what caused it, he is speculating when I had a major whiplash attack in the army but right now its hard saying. That is the first attack I had but my squad leader wouldnt let the medic take me in. Then after that as I said, I just never really paid any attention to it. And on top of that when I fell on the snow and ice twice where I had surgery down on my back. I've lost feeling completed from waist down for what seemed like an eternity. I need to use a cane when I go out now. But, practicing is gonna be interesting since I am moving back home so I have more people watching me. So if anyone wants me to keep you updated on how my very limited training is going I will. Now I know its not in my head. Osu!! Brian
  15. Welcome also. Also on that black belt. Where he is 16 it could also be junior black belt aka temporary as Rateh pointed out too.
  16. Thanks for the heads up JohnASE. I need to buy a couple new uniforms but im looking for the elasctic waistband again due to certain health reasons (on my part ) but also that are heavy. I'll just have to keep my eyes open though.
  17. not true lupin, my hanshi was the last one to keep studying under tatsou and visited him quite often with the marines there. They where all taught the same, its probably there interpretation of how they thought tatsou was teaching them since his english was not very good. I dont see our hanshi alot, he is also the only recognized 9th dan in the US under Kichiro. Thats why we had a world tournament about 12 yrs ago bringing all associations together under one banner but there was too many bickering bout who was the legit high rank next to kichiro. Talk bout ma politics at its worst. But thats why hanshi and kichiro have mulling over the notes, old movies and anyone still alive that will talk to the two.
  18. yup, it would be recognized between us but you would be scratching your head if you came to our school and the same if I came to yours id be scratching mine. Right now, our Hanshi is in the process of getting each kata to exactly how tatsou trained and it gets confusing but then you realize the application that he was trying to achieve with it.
  19. you can use the board for either or but it is recommended to be instructed by someone that knows how to use the board correctly. I've dislocated a toe cause I wasnt paying attention and bruised my knuckle from hitting it wrong.
  20. Been in a few confrontations but never where fists where bared. Even though I know the other person tried there best to get me to lose control. Usually I can talk my way out of fighting by being calm and casual but when my mouth starts drying out, my pulse starts quickening I know the other person hit the right button so I just apoligize and I walk away or get in my vehicle.
  21. I can answer this with the isshinryu mindset. If Lupin was to come to our dojo she would be very confused on some movements even though its same style. Our Hanshi has started going back over his notes, old movies and conferences with Kichiro on what Tatsou actually meant by certain movements in the kata. So yes, even though we study the same style it is vastly different depending on how the instructor percieves the moves. Not always with the association itself. Case in point I went home finally last week and sat through class (i'm disabled so its hard for me to do certain things ) and while watching the students, seisan which is our first kata changed agained from what i was shown over 5 yrs ago.
  22. yeah im with you kuma. I prefer outdoors. the layout of the land is great for practicing and depending on what shoes your wearing can make a interesting work out.
  23. ah, the good ole why do we chamber like this scenario hehehe. being an isshinryu practiioner like you lupin we mainly chamber for proper form and excution so you can get the feel of how your body responds. And when you watch the old movies of Tatsou you can see him somewhat doing the same. For sparring, even though it doesnt look like it but in your fighting stance you constantly stay in a somewhat chamber guard. Plus chambering mentally challenges you on how much force is actually needed to throw that punch. The only thing I really chamber is my kicks while sparring.
  24. Yup, we teach techniques to certain parts of the body that are illegal in a tournament. But by doing so we stress on being attacked to sparring. And as sensei8 said what is legal in a tournament is not usually legal outside.
