  1. Where I live handguns are illegal. I haven't even heard of anyone that owns a real one. Cops carry them, and I think people in the military can be certified to own them, but I'm sure it's pretty restricted. The only guns around here are hunting rifles and shotguns, and the chances of someone confronting you on the street with one of those is next to nil. I'm all for gun control. The worst I'd have to worry about being attacked with would be a knife. There was one guy a little while ago who called 911 saying that he was going to go kill all the men his wife is sleeping with, with a shotgun, but he was caught (he was shooting at cops even) and got in a very large amount of shit. Anyway, considering where I live and the circumstances, the best weapon for me to carry would be my hands, feet, and common sense. I also like the cane thing, I believe I will probably need one in the near future with the condition my knees are in now anyway. I don't see how it could be illegal to have a cane, as long as you are actually using it (or even pretending to use it) for what it was made for. That and you can buy them anywhere.

  3. I have a few Chinese broadswrods. A few Chinese Straightswords. One Nine-section Whip-chain A couple pairs of Nunchuks A brass flute that you can screw off the end revealing something like a jagged spear-head. A nice wooden staff with cranes engraved in it. Two hands and two feet And anything else that happens to be lying around in time of need.
  4. I used to laugh at karate. That's because there are a lot of crappy Karate schools around here, and they make the martial art look like a joke. One day I met a guy who was really a great Martial Artist and he was a karate guy. I have since realised that it's not really the martial art that makes you great it is how well you were taught, how well you can learn, and how you can apply the art that makes you good. (I say this alot) My personal favourite Martial Art is Kung Fu, and I prefer it's approach over that of Karate. Why? because that's my opinion. Very broadly and generally speaking - Kung Fu is more circular and fluid, while Karate is more linear and direct. There is just something about the Chinese Arts that I really like and really feel there is something great behind them. I cross-train in Kickboxing (the kind that is just like western boxing, but with kicks) and I find it has made me a well-rounded fighter. I think I need to learn a little more ground fighting skills, but Chin Na training makes me feel somewhat confident I could look after myself if I got into a grappling situation. So I will wait until later, when I have more money and time to find a good BJJ school or something. Yeah, so anyway. I prefer Kung Fu, because it is just my personal preference.
  5. Where I went it was not your rank that decided what weapon you could use it was the sifu. I started training with a sword (a practice chinese sword, not a samurai sword) a few months after joining. After a while I started learning the staff as well as the sword. Most people at my school started with the staff though. A friend of mine was training in nunchuks and another was training with the 3-sectional staff ^.^ Everyone started at a different time. Our sifu would start us training with a weapon when and if he thought we were ready. Some people learn the basics slower than others, and some people pick up on things really quickly.
  6. Geez. Where I used to go it was $30 CAN/month .. that's like $20 US And it was $5 extra if you wanted to take Kickboxing too, but for the serious students like myself it was just $30 for everything. I also got a key to the place to come train on my own whenever I wanted. The only reason our sifu even charged us money was so that he could pay the rent and heating bill for the place. Now I live in a bigger city where every place is expensive and I don't like the classes. I train on my own mostly now. After the intense training with a Sifu who really pushed me to my limits every class, it's not worth paying all this money for the places here. Any student in my old school could mop the floor with their endurance and strength alone compared to here.
  7. Just so you know. Shaolin is Kung Fu. Just be careful if you're looking into Shaolin. Make sure it's not modern Wushu if you want to learn self defence. Also, make sure it's not a school just calling itself Shaolin since that seems to be a new 'fad'. And I stand by my first post Kung Fu cross-training in kickboxing or boxing.
  8. Why don't you watch and/or do a class of each. I'd prefer kung fu in most cases of over jujutsu. I went to a tournament once and watched the Jujutsu guys and thought it was a joke. It could very well have just been a bad school, but it left me with a bad impression of the art. So, anyway, check out the classes first, try and make sure it's not a bad teacher. A bad school in any art will lose to a better school of another art. It's not really the martial art, it is how well you were taught, how well you can learn, and how you can apply the art that makes you a good martial artist or fighter.
  9. Yeah, you should do some research and find out which style you'd prefer. Watch some classes of some different school sin your area. My personal preference would be wing chun (kung fu), cross-training in kickboxing or boxing.
  10. Belts mean nothing. Get over it.
  11. He only decided that AFTER this fight. Personally, even though I'm a fan of Bruce Lee, I think that Wong was holding back. I see Bruce as the cocky and stubborn type to not give up or admit defeat even if he is outskilled. After that fight he ignored an open, public challenge with Wong. If he had so easily defeated him, like Linda had described, it would have been no problem for him to publicly defeat Wong again, and get some more fame (which I think Brce craved). Beating the Grandmaster of Northern Shaolin is sure to get you that, if only among the Chinese community. Also he changed a lot after that fight. I'd also like to point out this, what Bruce himself said: Pounding someone in the back of the head doesn't sound like a very smart thing to do. Do they really teach this in Wing Chun? I wouldn't think so. He atrributed that to Wing Chun, and said he had to alter his way of fighting. To me that says that he obviously hadn't gotten that far in Wing Chun or traditional 'Kung Fu'. He then rejected traditional styles and become what he was before he died. I don't think he had much experience or any sort of understanding of traditional kung fu, and was in no position to say anything for or against it.
  12. Guns are what get you in jail or killed. If someone ever tries to attack you without a lethal weapon like a gun, and you happen to shoot them, what do you think happens? Also, I would rather be trained in martial arts, and have a cool head in a threatening situation, than be panicking and have a gun.
  13. You can always get the cartilidge (sp?) removed from your nose. A guy I know did that. I'd think it would stop your eyes from watering when someone hits you square in the nose.
  14. That guy got was was coming to him Wing Chun teaches you to be efficient with your energy, not attack the guy like you're a little girl trying to get your diary back from your older brother.
  15. kung fu is an american way of saying 'gong fu' and if you meant 'mandarin', then it is gong fu.
  16. I wouldn't say a, because I'm not comfortable like that. plus it seems to make me stand 'square' to my opponent, leaving me open. I also wouldn't say b, because that restricts me. it make me stand completely sideways. Unless I liked to stand with my body distorted of course, but god knows how I'd going to generate any power. So I guess the only option left for me to take is c. a comfortable position that doesn't leave me as open as a, and doesn't restrict me like b. It allows for the full body rotation to punch with speed AND power. And that's my final answer.
  17. I am going to watch the Shaolin Monks, right now!
  18. Ok. Come on people. There was one guy so far who knew anything about Jackie Chan. He DID train serious Martial Arts while growing up. He would have trained a hell of a lot harder growing up than Li Xiaolong (Bruce Lee). The opera master he was learning under trained him at lengths that we would consider torture over here. And yes, he learned REAL martial arts. It wasn't until later in his life that he started working as a stunt-double in movies, getting his ass kicked willingly because he was so damn tough. Just because he is funny and acts in comic movies doesn't mean anything. Bruce Lee was c ocky, so I don't hink he would have degraded himself in a movie as Jackie Chan does constantly for the comedy of it. In closing Jackie Chan would be a formidable opponent, but if we had Bruce in his prime fighting the aging Jackie Chan now? Bruce would definitely win, since he trained daily solely for the purpose of improving his fighting ability (a la JKD). Jackie has been doing movies for so long, I doubt he has done any training of that sort for a while. But if we had the young Bruce versus the young Jackie Chan, then I'd say Jackie Chan would have one. Bruce in his prime, and the young Jackie Chan? Hard to say, and noone could say this for sure, NOBODY. If people knew things like this for sure, there'd be no point in betting on 'big fights'.
  19. They had to do the flying Besides, it's from a series written by a famous Chinese author, they had to stay true to the books right?
  20. Ok, I watched the trailer. They changed some things! I hope that don't add all those sound effects that they had in the trailer to the actual movie! It's ruining it! And when the guy gets his clothes ripped off, he is still wearing underwear. That's funny, if the blast had enough power to rip alll his clothes his undies should have went too. They must be super shaolin underwear! I already picked out some bad translations, and it was just the trailer! Oh well, what can you do? I guess they thought Americans need stupid sound effects to enjoy their movies, and that people can't see someon's butt. You'll be scarred for life.
  21. I've seen it a thousand times and it's still funny I've had this for at least a year now, I'm confused? ANyway, they are not brothers in the bioligical sense. They are brothers in the Gong Fu sense. When a master takes on his disciples, they becaome brothers. Usually the student that has been there the longest is the oldest brother, regardless of age. It's a great movie! I recommend everyone see it. It's famous in China, and will be in North America as soon as the English version is out. I guess that must be what you are talking about.
