  1. Fantastic book review, Heidi; thank you for it!! I believe that this book would be an important addition to my library because nutrition shouldn't be overlooked or taking quote lightly. Being 57 years old, I believe that nutrition and the like should be at the top of my bucket-list to keep me on the floor for years to come!!
  2. Stations are good for keeping their attentions; nothings stale!! Challenging students is vitally important, no matter the age!!
  3. GM Young Ik Suh taught a very simple choke defense...while being choked, spit in the attackers face, then do this or that, but do something. I suppose it has merits both as an insult and as a defense!!
  4. I believe that those noted MAist taught their children the same way that they taught the general student body. By that, I'm almost sure that there was no favor afforded their children; all students same!! But having the Master right there at home, had more access to the Master, I mean, they lived under the same roof!! I'm also sure that the Master separated the family formality from the Dojo formality. I believe it's still quite possible today because the Master is rooted, therefore, the children adopt that mindset, and therefore, become the proponents of the Master, therefore, the style!! You can see this being a possible when the children of many noted Masters are Senior Ranks; and I'm sure that those children were more so under the microscope than others.
  5. Specificity is important, just as long as the parent/student isn't questioning the CI's grading. By that I mean, the CI determines everything about everything; therefore, question, but with respect.
  6. Not just stances, but postures as well. Can't have one without the other. This type of training should be done as often as possible because you can't transition and the like without having both a solid stance and posture.
  7. Aha...Thanks, Brian. I'll look for that much closer!! Thanks, Bob. This weekend, we will be in Dodge City for Gun Smoke Nationals. It looks like Kendall only has 3 in his bracket, and one is a national placer. But Kenneth is in a novice division with 7 wrestlers. So it should be a fun day!Yes, sounds like a very fun day for all of you!! I look forward to your report!! Make sure your camera batteries are CHARGED!!
  8. Solid post!!
  9. You've received some good advice here where you might find the sources. In that, I'd stress that the most reliable source for what you're seeking can be found with your Sensei. However, learn and understand the Oyo, and within that, discoveries can be found. Even the most noted practitioner, imho, is subjected to their own Oyo Bunkai. They seek, they discover, and then they seek some more!! It's theirs and theirs alone, and to share with whomever is willing to receive it, thusly, accepting its founding's.
  10. Aha...Thanks, Brian. I'll look for that much closer!!
  11. Yes, it's uncommon/rare, but it happens. When it does, the infraction has to be severe enough to warrant it. Rank is forever. However, the knowledge is what's forever; that can't be removed. The rank, is just a thing, and things can be removed whenever the governing body sees fit; they don't need a reason because they possess the proprietary rights over whatever the thing might be. Our Hombu has done this before, but the infraction was so severe per the governing body, that to them, it had to be done!! Welcome to the world of MA politics. We don't have to like it and we don't have to agree with it, but, it's not our place in the first place.
  12. It can be quite rewarding, even though, I've not had the opportunity myself. Yet, what Heidi and Danielle speak towards are quite fruitful; I'd listen to their advise closely. The biggest thing, I can imagine is "being" the instructor over your own kids. Having said that, there are many well known MA Masters that have their kids as assistants; high ranking assistants. Kanazawa, Gibu, Joo Bang Lee, and Nakamura, and the list goes on. I suppose it's a mindset between the two that have to be cultivated over the years.
  13. Pay with them...therefore...let them play. Kids this age learn by playing. Playing things that deal with MA drills. There are many companies that sell MA themed drills for that age group; seek them out for advise. Tumbling, jumping, etc...just engage them and keep them challenged!!
  14. First of all, welcome to KF; glad that you're here!! With the four listed, I'd say, flip a coin, all have there merits. Visit the dojo's more than one time and several classes, and then speak with each CI. Good luck in your search!!
  15. Is this the one with brackets that you show on FB?? If so, cool. If not, sorry!! Seems to me that the season's going quite well. Keep rolling!!
  16. No, I don't think he would've because he knew my feelings on the subject and respected my reasons.
  17. Solid post!! Aggression can be counter-productive; one doesn't need to be aggressive to be effective.
  18. Solid post!! I believe that we're drawn to something so challenging because we're always wanting to challenge ourselves in many venues; it's within our nature, I suppose.
  19. Imho, He's breaking one of the biggest maxims for instructors! He's dead wrong, and should be ashamed of himself, and if he continues, he shouldn't be teaching anybody anything!! Your relationship with him is simple...Student, you...Instructor, him!! Nothing more, and nothing should be inappropriately added to that relationship. His hands should be minimal in contact with you, and by that I mean, correcting posture, hands, and so on. That contact should be always kept to a minimum, and only when it involves teaching/correcting. If he was my Junior, I'd have a strong conversation with him and set him straight QUICK. Therefore, it's going to be up to you to be the responsible one and set him straight IMMEDIATELY, but in a professional manner. He's accountable, therefore, you must make him accountable immediately. Remind him that you're there to learn the MA, and nothing more. If he's unwilling to be the consummate professional, then quit, and find someone else who's better. Remind him that he's a family...a wife...kids...well known and respected in the community. AND...it's not worth it for him to throw it all away by being unprofessional. Tell him to use the head that's on his shoulder, and nothing else. After all, he's the distraction!! You're there to learn the MA, and he's there to teach THE MA...nothing else!! It's not flattering, it's an insult to you and to his dojo, and to his family!! Teach him the word...NO!!
  20. I'm sure that this was evident to happen sooner or later. Please check it out... http://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/mma/ufc-champ-ronda-rousey-in-2015-sports-illustrated-swimsuit-issue/ar-AA9an2X?srcref=rss I'm sure that this will help the MMA industry because SI is main stream, and well known and accepted by all, not just men.
  21. If you want anything of value from the MA, then you have to endure anything that's taxing. Shugyo is how I've endured all these years, and I've had times in my journey were I wanted to pack it in and learn something that's not so vexing. But, each time I'd contemplate other alternatives, I'd hear Dai-Soke yelling..."Shugyo!!", over and over. After all, he was right when he said..."It's you, not me!!" Or, one of his favorite..."I already know how to do it...do you!?!" Therefore, I endure, still, not because he made me, but because I pushed through. There are things that will tax you to no end, but that's when the mettle meats the floor. Repetitions are important to anything, and the MA is no exception. Muscle memory depends on it, now and forever. Endure that which tries you!! "I don't want to go tonight!" or.... "I don't feel like practicing today!" These are true for work, play, and training, but when you endure, you're very glad that you did.
  22. Well. I sincerely wish them much success for them both/all in their new endeavor!!
  23. what he said. It seems that if you are truly comfortable and not challenged your doing it wrong. My wife thinks its fun because I rarely miss I can't argue with that, either!!
