Solid post!! I also have always seen that the difference in Judo throws from Karate throws is that Judoka's remain with the opponent while the Karateka's remain upright for a follow/finish technique. Which ones correct? Both! Different ideas bring different models which also bring different desires based on what's to be achieved. Also, Mr. Abernathy's Bunkai is what it is, I don't like it and I don't hate it either. Why? Oyo Bunkai allows ME, and me alone to discover the different avenues while on my own MA journey. To not follow someone else's ideology, but to discern on my own what they're a proponent of...discard or accept as my Oyo discovers. Good topic, Brian; thanks for it!!

How long before you felt proficient at your chosen MA?
sensei8 replied to DWx's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Great topic, Danielle; thanks for starting it!! June/July 2003 I was awarded my Hanshi by Yoshinobu Takahashi Sensei [Dai-Soke]...my Sensei!! That's when I felt proficient! Why that? Can't test for any Shogo title...Hanshi is the highest level one can achieve, and nonetheless, any Shogo title can only be bestowed upon by ones Sensei or the founder or the governing body; Dai-Soke in my case bestowed my Hanshi...and this means more than I could ever express, or hope for or expect. I train not for the rank or for the titles, but I train for the knowledge; I'm complete in my MA totality!! Rank means nothing...I can test for those...and I've tested for more than my share over these past 51 years. Yet, to have ones Sensei bestow any Shogo title to them, that's a notable milestone, but to have Hanshi...well... That's when I felt proficient! My Sensei saw that in me, something that I never saw in myself. Not one, but all three Shogo titles have been bestowed upon me by Dai-Soke. This might not mean much to anyone else, but to me, it means something. There's not much that I'm good at, and I mean that, Shindokan is all I know and all that I'm good at, and in that, I know that I can teach with the best of them...the floor doesn't scare me, but it motivates me to do my best for my students, and for my Dai-Soke, and for my fellow MAist. -
Conciliatory gestures to a defeated opponent.
sensei8 replied to Wado Heretic's topic in Instructors and School Owners
Respect begets respect! The intent must be pure, and nothing else! Otherwise, the words exchanged will be lost, and unfounded!! Therefore, do/say what's on YOUR heart, and be not lead by those who's examples offend you!! -
Solid post!! It's how the technique(s) is SOLD to the judges and the like! It's known in the Pro-Wrestling business...if the performers can sell the first three rows in the house, the entire house will believe in what they're seeing, and experiencing.

For the most part, I do enjoy reading Jesse's articles! ~karatebyjesseImho... Karate's not broken! It's the practitioner that's broken! The quote above is quite assumptive of Jesse because what's truly lacking is his belief in his fellow karateka's. He supports his statement by using the word..."many". That word offends is quite cold to me! I'm a karateka, and Jesse doesn't know me, nor does he know many karateka's because the MA world is comprised of A LOT of "Karate practitioners", therefore, imho, his judgment is unwarranted, thusly, unfair. Unfair to the "many Karate practitioners", of which I am a part of, of which you are part of. No, Jesse didn't say, "all". However, "many" could be Jesse's way of saying "all" in a nice and clever way!!

Cool; looking forward to viewing them!!

Imagine this, if you can... Kansas City Royals WON the World Series Kansas City Chiefs winning the Super Bowl Well, so far, one out of two is GREAT!! Major sporting teams have done quite well for themselves in Kansas....as of late!! I'm a Cowboy and Yankee fan, and I don't mind saying this at all, and it's out of respect... GO ROYALS!! GO CHIEFS!!

Thanks. I use century martial arts for things actually, I'll keep that in mind for sure. As for price, I don't know what others are paying in that lot so it's hard to say if I'm getting a good deal. The good deal for me was the rent that slowly scales up to asking price on a 3 year lease. I looked around and the price was comparable for size, but in my opinion it was a btetter location then a lot of them for the same price. I agree about the corner spot, happy about that. The big yellow karate sign, man I couldn't complain if I wanted too. I was stressed about how to teach at the rec center and teach at this new location at the same time. Well, I made a deal with a black belt Jiu Jitsu instructor to teach at the new school while I am at the rec center teaching, then I'll get back and finish with some karate. I was stressed because I did not want to have to only be open a few small hours while I was down there teaching, now my business can be open and be productive. Things working out, well, I'm not going to lie I'm making them work out haha. A lot of work Everything sounds GREAT...way to go!!

That's an excellent question, JR 137!! If I had had the opportunity to teach my mom and/or dad, I'd call them mom or dad because that's what they are to me...mom or dad. And I'd not fault them if they called me Bob or son, because that's what I am to them...Bob or son. Shoot, I hate being called anything but "Bob" while at the dojo or at the Hombu. Formal names are required during certain times at the Hombu. But, still, I'd not chastise anyone, including my mom or dad for violating protocol, especially if it was an innocent mistake. Do it on purpose, well, you'll be reminded in a respectful manner.

Yes, very nice! Comes with a sign too...good thing a dojo was there before! Being on the corner, imho, is the best because you're either the first business or the last business seen, and you're not lost in between a sea of other businesses, like the Mexico restaurant, who might be overlooked because of that. Being on the corner, did you have to pay more monthly/annually?? Nice bright yellow sign...big letters! If I may suggest, and it's worked for me, contact Century MA Supply out of Oklahoma City, OK to purchase front door/window decorations at a reasonable price. Anything to draw the eyes to you. Remember, consumers are quite visual!!

Our syllabus books are quite raw; nothing worth to write home to mom about. List of Kihon [per rank] List of Kata [per rank] List of Kumite [per rank] Kobudo [where applicable per rank. Kobudo ranking is SEPARATE from Karate-do] Tameshiwara requirements [where applicable per rank] Brief history about Shindokan Saitou-ryu [only in the 10th kyu booklet] Dojo Kun [dojo rules...in every book, no matter rank] Like I said, nothing worth to write home to mom about! Even with the Shindokan Shield on the front cover, they're plain, and I mean plain. Nonetheless, everything a student needs to refresh their minds as to the expectations per rank/per student can be found. The Hombu has a department that manages these books!

TKD Forms; a running comparison
sensei8 replied to bushido_man96's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
I will have to see if I can find it, Bob. I believe its 99 moves long, and is a hodgepodge of all the ATA forms.I believe you're correct. I look forward to your findings, Brian! -

I'd say no, muscle memory does not equal instinct. Muscle memory merely means your body has learned a movement pattern; i.e., your body knows how to do it. That doesn't mean that your body knows when to do it. That's when training applications comes into play. I do overhead presses and squats at the gym. The movement patterns are ingrained, but my body isn't going to use those patterns unless I tell it to do so. But when I do decide to squat down and pick something up, that movement pattern is going to show itself when I move. With self-defense techniques, its not just enough to train a form or kata and assume you will use the techniques in it when you need to. Your body will know how to do the techniques, but you have to train yourself to recognize when the techniques need to be used. Hence the need for application and scenario-based training. Solid post!!

Interesting. Perhaps, he's the exception! Thanks for sharing that, Danielle!!

I think that is usually due to differences in culture between okinawa/japan and korea. Also due to the preferences of instructors themselves. Sensei Morio Higoanna only wears his normal black belt and no other However, they do wear their Shogo title identifiers on their black belt. Higoanna Sensei has 3 bars on his black belt to distinguish him as a Hanshi. edit: spelling error
