Best Heavyweight Kata Gi - suggestions please...
sensei8 replied to sampionce's topic in Equipment and Gear
Meijin There are several types of Meijin gi's to choose from, depending on ones needs for the moment. 100% cotton, underarm gussets with vent holes, straight cut for the pants and sleeves, wide selection of weights, sizes 3-12, and free embroidery up to $15. The price of a Meijin gi can range from very low prices to the pricey, but if price isn't a factor, then the prices are affordable. I've purchased several Meijin gi's, and I am more than satisfied with them. I'm a long time customer of Century, and their gi's have served their purposes. I felt like a traitor when I switched to Meijin, yet, I still purchase from Century. -
What is a martial hobbyist?
sensei8 replied to Spartacus Maximus's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
All in all, whether ones a hobbyist or not, at least the MA has been a part of their life, small or large; the journey won't be forgotten! If I might be bold, neither will what's been learnt forgotten...it's there...somewhere in the small recess of the mind...waiting for the time to be recalled whenever needed. -
Member of the Month for February 2016: liger
sensei8 replied to Patrick's topic in KarateForums.com Announcements
Congrats liger; well deserved!! -
I'd love to get together with other Shuri-te practitioners for a day of kata and the like; I'm in Pearland, TX. Please, count me in! As Kaicho of the SKKA, my calendar can be quite busy from time to time throughout the year, but if given some alert as to it being scheduled, I can possible work it onto my calendar somehow and someway, but no guarantee.

Very nice!! Thanks for sharing!!

I wholeheartedly agree!!

Speak to your CI [Chief Instructor] to ask for MORE kumite time, starting with the most basics of kumite within your style. Imho, a style that steers away from kumite is so out to touch to any reality. Spar...spar...spar...spar...spar...spar...ALL OF THE TIME!! I agree. At the rank you are at, I should think you should have done some form of sparring by now. Especially if you plan on attending tournaments. Why don't you spar in class? If you don't ever spar/kumite, then how are you going to be able to defend yourself? Things like timing and distancing, for example; everything needed will escape you when the critical moment is upon you. Tournaments are as close as one can get to a real fight under rules and regulations. FAMILIARITY! That will be lost if one never spars/kumite much or ever!! Imho!!

3rd place....1500+ competitors...yeah...very respectable finish. Kendall has everything to be proud of across the board. With every loss comes learning! With every win comes learning! Kendall is learning with every win and loss, and that is very important, especially at his age. Kendall...does your most favorite team, in your favorite major sport, win all of the time? No! Do they lose every time? No! Neither will you, and wherever you finish, know that you did your best. In that, I'm.... ...very proud of you, Kendall...way to go!!

Great question! Thanks, Danielle! Instructors within Shindokan are chosen by the individual dojo's, alas, by the designated CI of those individual dojo's, and this takes place at Sankyu, and no sooner. Therefore, it's all OJT!! The Hombu does have remedial classes for designated instructors! It's held twice a year, usually in the 1st and 3rd quarter. These classes are 1 month in duration, and they're administered by the CI of the SKKA, which is currently our Kancho, Greg Forsythe, who's a Hachidan as well as Hanshi. All designated instructors within the SKKA network are welcomed to attend, however, they must remain in house at the Hombu for that full month that the classes are in session. If not, they receive a "Drop" on their Hard Card, but this is more clerical than administrative; said instructor is always welcomed back without questions. I choose my instructors, and I demand that my instructors attend the remedial classes at the Hombu every two years. I hold "Pep" classes with my instructors daily, and I hold "101" classes once every quarter. Is there a reason why you're not considered to be the CI since you're the Kaicho. Or is your current position more administrative? PS. I totally agree I think every black belt, every so often, should take a beginner class to work on their foundation. When I was first elected to the Kaicho position, I was the CI of the SKKA/Hombu. However, seeing that I'm not in house but 5 times a year, I felt that it made perfect sense to appoint Greg Forsythe, our Kaicho, to be the CI seeing that he lives less than 10 miles from the Hombu, whereas, I'm in Houston, TX. As Kaicho, the buck stops here, with myself, across the board, no matter the department!! As Kaicho, I oversee Administrative, Executive, and Technical departments; these are the three top departments at the SKKA/Hombu. GM's of these departments report to me directly.

What % of Tang Soo Do is Katas?
sensei8 replied to DavyKOTWF's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
I'd guess it would be... 33% basics 33% forms 34% sparring Like I said...I guess I suppose that this might be how TSD is. Can't learn forms or sparring without first learning the basics, thereafter, forms and sparring will fall into their own accordingly. In short...I'm speculating, of course. -
WTF to re-brand as WF Taekwondo

Martial Arts as Physical Therapy?
sensei8 replied to goforit1's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Sounds to me life a worthy endeavor across the board...I like it. The MA, and the physicality of it, can have a positive impact on a patient in both the short and the long of it. As long as a doctor is behind it 100%...why not?! -
What is a martial hobbyist?
sensei8 replied to Spartacus Maximus's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
The answer to the bold type above will vary from practitioner to practitioner, imho. A student that attends class 3 times a week, week after week...month after month...year after year...isn't a hobbyist. A student that attends class 1-2 times per month...after month...might not be a hobbyist either, based on parameters. However, year after year in same routine...isn't a hobbyist either. Should a MAist be gauged by how much and how often one trains/practices? The important issue, imho, is that they ARE practitioners of the MA; while it's full time or part time, but they're out there on the floor doing what they're suppose to be doing...training/practicing/attending classes. I've students, that due to their work schedule, can only attend class 1-2 times per month, but they've been on the floor for many years; their heart is in it, and not just for a season, but for a reason. Do the MA once in their lifetime, for a very brief moment, and never again...there's the hobbyist, imho. -
Thanks for the reply, Tobias!! Like in this WKF... http://wkf.net/structure-main.php
