  1. The other night I was channel surfing and came across a fight between Frank Shamrock and one of the Gracie brothers. (I forgot which Gracie). I don't know if this was an old rerun or a new fight, as I was just flipping through and stopped to watch. Anyway, what happened was Shamrock lost the bout and got disqualified because he kicked the Gracie guy in the head while they were on the floor and Gracie was obviously affected by it enough that the fight was stopped. Shamrock told reporters that he is old school, and he came here to fight and that's how he fights. He said he wasn't aware of the rule "no hits to the head". I was wondering if anyone saw this and what your thoughts were on this?
  2. I agree with what someone said earlier. You REACTED to the way he ACTED toward you in that he attacked you to hit you & you defended yourself. If you were my relative I would hope you would have done exactly what you did. Let's imagine what could have happened if he was successful in hitting you with say, a bat or if he had a knife? Don't be hard on yourself. I think your actions were justified. I hope I never have to use the skills I learned but if I do, I hope I am quick enough to react like you did to save myself from a knuckle sandwich (or worse!)
  3. There are some healthy alternatives that don't cost much. Perhaps your parents are super busy to prepare meals ahead of time. When I was younger and in school, both my parents worked and I would come home from grade school to an empty apartment and start dinner so it would be almost done by the time my folks got home. My mom would get all the ingredients and leave them in the refrigerator for me. I think that's when I started to like cooking because I was able to be creative. No one got food poisoning in my family either! LOL Next time your folks go shopping, ask them to pick up some pre-cooked chicken and you can always toss a couple potatoes in the oven. A deli chicken or rotisserie chicken is not fried so its relatively healthy. Add some frozen veggies that you boiled yourself and you have a quick and healthy meal that you can eat and probably have leftovers for lunch the next day.
  4. I have a few favorite proverbs although I don't remember them by heart. I have them written down somewhere. I especially like a few written by Confucius.
  5. WOW !! What a pleasant surprise to wake up to ! Thanks Patrick & everyone ! This is a great website and I really enjoy reading and posting here. Thanks everyone for the congrat's! Much appreciated ! (Love my "colorful belt" there) LOL
  6. I don't believe in contracts either and from reading around in this website, a lot of other people here don't either. Reason being, things happen. People lose their job, the place doesn't live up to your expectations, etc., which is what happened in your case. Can you tell the owner you lost your job and your finances are too tight now? I hardly doubt he would ask for proof. You are not happy with the place and should not be forced to stick with it --- it's YOUR hard earned money. Good luck with this.
  7. If since the injury, you've iced it and taken anti-inflammatories and it still bothers you, then I'd suggest seeing a sports medicine doctor for further checking - possibly an x-ray if he feels the need. That's what I would do. Maybe it just needs another week or so. I'm not a doctor but if it really bothers you and the lump won't go away, I'd call one. Feel better.
  8. Personally speaking, I've found that using the leg lift machine at my local gym has strengthened my quads and calfs considerably. Just a suggestion to add to the others.
  9. I'm surprised. Take away popcorn from the movies and then what is next? Take away beer and hotdogs from ballgames?!! Cotton candy from carnivals?!! Popcorn is quieter than potato chips and it certainly doesn't make the loud noise that cell phones do. Yes, I go to movies and it drives me crazy when someone answers their cell phone or talks incessantly during the movie. Leave the popcorn be, I say. I think what cinemas should do is install inside the movie seating areas, trash receptacles which of course get emptied after every show so it won't stink up the place. Ok, I'm biased because I am a popcorn lover. If they ever banned popcorn, I'd sneak in my own. LOL - and the low fat version doesn't cut the mustard either. They can get rid of every other snack and even that artificial butter stuff. Just the smell of popcorn makes me want to have a movie marathon.
  10. I'm glad you laughed it off. Yes, it will probably happen again and have no fear, it happens to us older / old folks too. At least, to me it does.
  11. Truestar - I wouldn't stress about it --- awkward social situations such as this (and worse) happen to BOTH men and women of ALL AGES. Happens to me, happens to others and it will happen again. Such is life. Chalk it up to a weird moment and that's all; and I'm sure it's happened to her as well. No worries.
  12. True and if diabetes runs in your family, you need to be extra careful of your intake - - - even of natural sugars that are found in fruits and some vegetables.
  13. I agree with you, I think after several days, at the very most, a week, one would start to have the side effects from lack of food & liquids. While honey does have many positive nutritional properties, one could not possibly live healthy on honey alone and nothing else.
  14. From what I hear, this is very common (and it happens to me too). I have heard that you are supposed to focus on one point when you are turning your head, and make sure your eyes remain on that focused point and return there when you are twisting. Easier said than done and it doesn't always work for me. I usually have to stop right away so I don't barf on the floor.
  15. I have many so its hard to choose just one but I liked Ong Bak also. I like the fact that there was little to no special effects -- or so they claim -- filming this movie. He did his own stunts. He made another one after this and I forgot the name but it was equally as awesome. And of course, the old classic "Enter the Dragon"
  16. Seriously though I like this method & would probably tell him the same.
  17. LMAO!!!!!!!!!! I like this.
  18. I agree and I add that they should be different styles otherwise it may easily creaty body mechancs confusion! I agree.
  19. That's a valuable thing to know. After all accidents do happen in class, i.e., people getting hit in the head by accident, falling and hitting their head, etc.
  20. I understand why you feel that way but what I'm worried about is afterwards when the cops show up and if perhaps somehow it comes to light that I knew martial arts, I'm afraid that I'd be the one to automatically be cuffed & hauled away. I'm thinking that if someone hit me first, although I really wouldn't want that to happen, I can always claim self defense and me getting hit first would sure as heck tick me off enough to kick the crap out of them. My reasoning might not make total sense but what would you advise someone to do in a situation like this? Where, if you decide to strike first because you felt threatened, and let's say there was a witness standing by who relayed that to the cops, how could you avoid being the guilty one & getting arrested? I've always wondered about this.
  21. Does your instructor or anyone you train with at your dojo know CPR or is experienced in first aid? Would you have immediate help on hand if, let's just say, someone in class got hurt or collapsed?
  22. Example situation: if someone on the street is calling me names and trying to provoke me verbally, I'm not going to strike first. That is, after all, what they WANT you to do. Can I hit someone for calling me names? LOL - I don't think so. I can deal with name calling. But if someone raises their hands to hit me, and I see it coming, I'm certainly not going to stand there and allow them to hit me first. Now if they manage to get that first sucker punch in without me seeing it coming, well, guarantee you that my return punch will be felt.
  23. Depends on the scenario and let me preface that by saying one ever really knows how they are going to react in a situation until they themselves are in it. Let's say it was an attack without weapons...I'd tell my daughter, if you don't see a gun, fight back with everything you've got. Punch, bite, kick, gouge eyes out, rake your fingernails against his face, attack his groin with kicks and punches, bend back his fingers in the opposite direction, etc., do what you can and fight back with all your might. But if he's got a gun pointed at you, I don't see any way out of that, unfortunately; unless you are super highly experienced in deflecting weapons at close range.
  24. LOLLLLL !!! Sounds like your home takes a beating !
  25. Look at it this way, the best part of making it yourself or having someone make it for you is that it will be unique!
