  1. side step and middle block
  2. perform three dragon tail sweeps and then a jump front snap kick landing in left foot front stance and turning to the right 90 degrees
  3. At my school there are classes from 10:00 Am till 4:00 PM. Most of the time I go to the "competition" class from 1:00-2:30 and the Red+Black Belt Class from 2:30- 4:00 The Competition Class is to prepare for going to tournament in more traditional karate as opposed to XMA. The Red+Black belt class is geared for people Red (2nd kyu) Senior Red (1st Kyu), Shodan, or Nidan. I'm allowed to come even though I'm a 5th kyu presently.
  4. sweetness! Did You know Bruce Lee was born in San Fransisco?
  5. I think this should be revived! Did you know that Ankoh Itosu once broke down an entire wall systematically by no other means than punching?
  6. What does it mean by provisional Black Belt? I'm not familiar with that term...
  7. "Can you kill somebody?" My response- "Why?" somebody throws ball at my head from behind "why didn't you know that was coming?" Do I have eyes on the back of my head? C'mon, I wear glasses on the two I have! and yes, I frequently hear the Kung Fu Fighting song...
  8. I hope you mean Kyu Kyu is used for Okinawan and Japanese styles. Gup is the Korean word that means the same thing.
  9. I have only one thing to say: Youtube is your friend! I haven't searched for bunkai intensivly, but I've been able to find at least 1 video for all the shorin ryu (matsubayashi) katas. so good hunting!
  10. I'm currently in a dojo 3-4 times a week, but I hope to up that number soon.
  11. Experience seems to be the best teacher IMO in this aspect of martial arts. Point in case: when I first started MA, I would come home with bruises on my legs and abrasions on my feet. Thanks to my naturally high pain tolerance, I didn't take much notice until after class, usally the next day. Fast forward untill more recently I started at a Isshin Ryu school that I am sorta helping with. Being the student with the most experience, I not only get to help with warmups and exercises, but I also get to be the human heavy bag. First night of sparring 'twas me against all of the class in point sparring. 14 people later and I have no bruises, bumps, cuts, or any other injuries. I left several people with bruises on their legs from my shin blocks. (not intentionally of course, just executing technique) The point being, The only way to physical endurance is repetition, regardless of method. I've noticed this basic principle among various styles, Goju, Kyokushin, traditonal Shorin ryu, Muay Thai, etc.
  12. Yeah, I agree with Kansascity here, personally, if I had to choose based on what I know from the styles, I would train Goju, but that's simply personal preference. They are both quality styles that are effective overall. But only you can see which school will work for you and help you reach the goals you want (sport, self defense, fitness, etc.) whatever they may be. Search youtube with Goju Ryu, and you'll find plenty of videos of katas. here's some sample kata from Goju: Sanchin Tensho Saifa Seiunchin Shisochin Sanseiru Sepai Seisan Kururumfa Suparimpei Gekisai Dai Ichi Gekisai Dai Ni Gekisai Dai San Taikyoku Jodan Taikyoku Chudan Taikyoku Gedan Taikyoku Kake Uke Tiakyoku Mawashi Uke Tenchi Seiryu Byakkoi Shujakku Genbu I got this list from wikipedia, so that school may or may not use the some of the ones listed here. Have fun!
  13. wait, people actually eat differently for competing? but seriously, I really don't change what I eat before competing. I just make sure I don't eat too soon before the match, and I eat soon after the competition. that way I'm not lugging around a belly full during kumite and I'm not wiped out for the rest of the day.
  14. Yesterday went to Karate class well over 100 pushups over the course of the class various kihon wrist release defense against front choke defense against rear choke defense against overhand knife Young Champion's Kata will post today's workout later after I do it.
  15. then do a series of middle blocks and knifehand strikes
  16. Perform scissor blocks and then go into a douple uppercut
  17. Kinda interesting that you say that, bc I am a Christian, and one of the reasons I looked into martial arts at all was bc of a Christian counselor! Currently, it's just me training, though my dad and brother took it up shortly after I did. My dad had to drop out mainly bc his left for arm was crushed in an accident years ago, though you could never tell now, and he didn't want to cause problems with that. Hopefully my brother will take it up again. But I do have a long family history of military service. several members of my family are former military, not to mention if you look far back enough, you'll see action even back to the Civil War (American), and probably before that, but family history currently not that extensive. And now, I'm done boring you all.
  18. I like this, maybe this will keep me motivated to keep with my workout! 9-2-08 extended curls to the front: 2x9x15, 1x8x15 Mumbo stance 2x45 secs. extended curls to side 2x8x15, 1x9x15 toe raise 3x15x60 (including olympic bar, don't know if I''m supposed to or not, but to me, 40 pounds counts!) Drop Jumps 3x12 weighted middle punches 3x8x15 Not mention a bunch of stretching. would have worked on forms as well, but I had to get to school, which is where I am right now actually!
  19. I have a heavy bag set up in the garage, but it's a constant struggle to keep enough space around it to use it. I also have a weight bench and many free weights in there, but since its close to the door, stuff is stacked around it so wading through random items is pretty regular for me. I do almost all of my weapons and forms outside, and I do anything requiring lying or siting down in my room. alas, I have no space for mats, but maybe one day...
  20. Thanks guys. As for the one handed techniques, I'm not entirely sure why we have them in there, other than it does make for excellent conditioning!
  21. Thanks for your input. I really haven't considered those things before. I've been examining it from a more application viewpoint than a competitive one, so this is really useful. And the part where I grab behind my back is a bit sloppy, I just need to work on locking it in at the same spot each time. Yeah, I figured that the only way to improve it is to learn from my mistakes. And what better way than to have other people tell me? So again, thank you.
  22. Surprisingly, I placed 2nd with that form. The guy who who got first was scary good, and the guy who got third did rather well, but he kinda lost balance during a spining hook kick. And a video of the bunkai wouldn't be that bad of an idea. I'll have to suggest it to my higher ranking friend or my sensei.
  23. I don't know if this is where I'm supposed to post this, but I don't mind if it's moved. This is a bo kata that my school teaches. Constructive criticism is more than welcome. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qWpx1NR9pUc
  24. This was my thought as well. I don't see how breathing out through the mouth is different than breathing out through the nose. Try this: kiaing or kihaping while breathing out through the nose... I think they call that "blowing your nose." That would be a little unsightly in the middle of kata LOL! I have actually seen people do this during gradings, and when they were supposed to kiai as well!
