The one thing I am surprised no one has mentioned is the connective tissues between the ribs. It is possible to injure those sparring, or in a wide variety of activities. And it can be hard to tell if it is connective tissues or ribs that have been damaged.

In either case the most definitive diagnosis can had only after an x-ray.

And damaged interstitial tissues can take about as long as a broken rib to heal.

Even it it's subluxation of the rib (minor sprain/dislocation), you'll feel it for quite a few weeks. Don't take another shot to the ribs for a while. Ice it down and take anti inflammatory med. A visit to the chiropractor can help manipulate the rib back in place and the sooner the better. I still feel my rib sprain after 8 months if I twist the wrong way.

If you have bruising that makes you feel almost sick go see a doctor.

It's happy hour somewhere in the world.

Well, his symptoms sure sound like a bruised rib:

I can breathe, move my arms and torso no problem and get by my day too.

There is considerable pain when pressing the area with my palm, when pulling my shoulders in the back or when breathing in at maximum.. I have never felt this before.

If he had damaged the connective tissue, he said “I can breathe, move my arms and torso no problem and get by my day too.” We would be in a hell of a lot more pain if he had over stretch those or something of that nature.

You bet I wont be volunteering for late night sparring for a while.

Shiit, its the first time I ever sparred and there you go.

Anyways, nearly a week now and still hurting maybe a bit less.

I am concerned about the post saying that I need a chiro to replace the rib in place. I dont think it is the case, just badly bruised or cracked. Or maybe the tissues...

A Chiro might help you. Now, if you are bruised, it may just heart, and if you end up going to a bad one (of which there are tons) you might find the rib to be injuryed even longer then need be.

Once the rib is healths, go to one, to get yourself all in wack and everything.

On the contrary, if the rib has been subluxated (joint sprained), you want to have it adjusted as soon as possible. Think of it as setting it back in place before the scar tissue forms and prevents it from realigning. If you were to dislocate your finger, you have it popped back into place, right? Same principle applies here for the ribs, only a few visits to the chiropractor will be neccessary. But, it's worth it.

However, it sounds like the problem might not be any more than simple bruising. It still wouldn't hurt (haha, get it?) to go see a sports doctor.

Note: Rib breaks don't always show up on an X-ray image.

It's happy hour somewhere in the world.

Subluxation is a partial dislocation, not a sprain. A dislocation and a sprain are 2 different things. A Sprain is the overstretching and/or tearing of a ligament. Sprain being one of several problems resulting from a dislocation, but it is not a dislocation, and there is nothing “pop into place.”

If his rib is dislocated, he will need to adjust it, but if not, he should save his cash and ice it up.
