Think you'll find it happens a fair bit in Asia.. although there are often religious backgrounds as well...

Westerners tend to be to attached to their material possessions to appreciate the benefits of such a life.

In Aikido your called an Uchi Deshi A live-in student. A student who lives in a dojo and devotes him/herself both to training and to the maintenence of the dojo (and sometimes to personal service to the SENSEI of the dojo).

WHOA! :o

Hold a minute there!

What do you mean by 'personal service to the sensei"?

Ti, Kilo just means that the student must clean the sensei's house, cook for him/her, do chores, etc.

In all of martial arts in japan/okinawa it is called uchi deshi. These people train everyday except Sunday usually. They live and breath karate. It is still very big in the kyokushinkai systems here in Japan. I know a couple in the Maki dojo system (offshoot of kyokulshin).

"Sensei's B*tch" springs to mind but I am only joking - No offence intended.

I so wish I could do this in some ways to be honest! You would learn SO much!
