Think you'll find it happens a fair bit in Asia.. although there are often religious backgrounds as well...

 

Westerners tend to be to attached to their material possessions to appreciate the benefits of such a life.

In Aikido your called an Uchi Deshi A live-in student. A student who lives in a dojo and devotes him/herself both to training and to the maintenence of the dojo (and sometimes to personal service to the SENSEI of the dojo).

Ti, Kilo just means that the student must clean the sensei's house, cook for him/her, do chores, etc.

In all of martial arts in japan/okinawa it is called uchi deshi. These people train everyday except Sunday usually. They live and breath karate. It is still very big in the kyokushinkai systems here in Japan. I know a couple in the Maki dojo system (offshoot of kyokulshin).
