Does anybody know what its called when a student lives with his instructor. The student cleans up and basically does everything the instructor tells him to in exchange for training. Thanks!

In Aikido your called an Uchi Deshi A live-in student. A student who lives in a dojo and devotes him/herself both to training and to the maintenence of the dojo (and sometimes to personal service to the SENSEI of the dojo).

Kendo is like starwars and everyone gets to be Darth Vader.

Uchi deshi. Doesn't sound too seducing for me.

I can understand if someone cleans the dojo and such instead of paying for training, but cleaning the senseis private house... That sounds strange.

Does that still happen in places? Sort of figured that type of deal went out of fashion with the 20th century.
