CheekyMusician Posted September 18, 2003 Posted September 18, 2003 Wasn't very sure where to put this, so I just put it in here, but I injured myself yesterday and just need to vent. I'd missed karate class last week, and decided to get in some extra practice last night to make up for what I'd missed last week. So I went outside with my dad and a shield, did one side thrust kick, then when I went to do my second side thrust kick I somehow managed to theatrically topple over. I don't even know exactly what happened, but I hurt my ankle. At the time it was pretty sore, but seemed to ease up a little as the night went on. Then this morning I woke up and it was throbbing. I didn't want to miss karate tonight, so I spent the whole day trying to get it to stop hurting as much as I could so I could go to karate. I was determined that I was going to go to karate tonight no matter how much it hurt. I practiced some kicks, and although my ankle hurt, it was bearable. When I tried jogging on the spot, and moving about on the balls of my feet like I would when I was sparring it was agony, though. Eventually, I just had to admit defeat. If I went to karate tonight, I'd be lucky to last the whole training session, and even if I did I'd probably make my ankle a lot worse, so I've just decided to miss karate. I'm so mad, though. I hate missing karate, and it was bad enough that I missed it last week. Now I'm sitting here being all depressed because normally I'd be at my karate class right now, and I'm stuck at home instead. Grrrr! Smile. It makes people wonder what you've been up to.
ZR440 Posted September 19, 2003 Posted September 19, 2003 You better take it easy on that ankle for a while. Ligaments take time to heal. I know. I inverted my ankle before Easter and am still limited in what I can do. It's happy hour somewhere in the world.
Bart the Lover Posted September 19, 2003 Posted September 19, 2003 I have to admit, Cheeky, that your post gave me a bit of a laugh. Not because you've hurt yourself, but because it reminds me of the times I have somehow landed on my butt on the floor. I somehow managed to theatrically topple over. I know what you mean. I once ended up on the floor after half falling, half flinging myself down! I think maybe these things happen when your mind is on one set of movements, but your body is doing something else. Don't rush back before you are healed--you'll only make your injury worse. I know it's frustrating, but there's no harm in taking a week or two off occasionally. You might find it helpful to go over your training in your mind: sparring, combinations etc. Reflecting on what you know, and inventing novel ways of putting it together, is training as well as punching and kicking. Take painkillers, rest, and perhaps go to the doctor if it doesn't improve. Look at it this way: now you have a legitimate reason to recline on your chaise-longue watching telly (maybe you could bribe/threaten someone into feeding you chocs while you're lying there). I'm glad to hear you are keeping up the training with your dad. How's that going? Are you getting good use out of the kicking shield? Are you seeing a difference in power yet? Hope your ankle gets better soon. Regards, Bart the Lover
CheekyMusician Posted September 19, 2003 Author Posted September 19, 2003 @Bart. I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one that manages to throw myself to the ground occassionally when I try to do a kick! Thankfully, my ankle feels much better today. Its still a wee bit painful to walk on, but its a vast improvement from yesterday, so I'll hopefully be back at training next week. Training with my dad is going good. I use my kick shield all the time now, I hardly ever use my focus pads for training anymore, and my kicks are steadily improving. In fact, the other day my dad and I were practicing in the living room and he kept complaining that my kicks weren't hard enough, that they were lacking in power etc. I was getting really annoyed with his complaints by the time we got to practicing side thrust kicks, and when I kicked the shield I pushed him so far back he actually landed on the sofa behind us, flipped over backwards and almost went over the back of the sofa! I was quite suprised by that, and I think so was he 'cause he hasn't complained about my kicks being too weak since! Smile. It makes people wonder what you've been up to.
Darce Posted September 21, 2003 Posted September 21, 2003 The same thing happened to me some days ago, when I was testing how high I was able to kick. I just fell backwards and landed on my butt. It didn´t hurt, but I felt kind of embarrassed. Shukokai Karate, Orange belt ( 7. kyu)

Something like that happened to me when I'd just started karate and was still a wee bit shy and nervous. It was a simple enough roundhouse kick I was trying to do but somehow went up in the air and landed with a thump. The only thing that was hurt was my pride, but it made it worse that everyone kept hopping about me for the next wee while saying, "Are you OK? Are you sure?" Eek! *goes red just thinking about it* Smile. It makes people wonder what you've been up to.
WolverineGuy Posted September 23, 2003 Posted September 23, 2003 Heck, I've thrown myself so many times I'm a freakin human highlight reel...of bloopers. Wolverine1st Dan - Kalkinodo"Shut up brain, or I'll stab you with a q-tip""There is no spoon."
