So perhaps instead of just crunching and bringing my elbows to my knees i should do maybe 50 of them, and then 50 of bringing my right elbow to my left knee and vice versa?

I predominantly do leg-lifts, but i find that my legs get sorer than my stomach.

Even if you work your obliques (muscles on each side of the torso) until they're rock solid, you still may be left with a layer of fat that hides the muscle underneath. The American Council on Exercise (ACE) assures us that no amount of crunching or twisting will diminish this abdominal fat .. but regular cardiovascular exercise will. There is still no such thing as spot reduction. Typically, people lose weight in their face and upper body first, followed by their abdominals, thighs and buttocks...so you might have to wait awhile to see those love handles start to disappear.

Yep, you're right KickChick - my face is much thinner, my upper torso was next and then my hips and butt last. And that was only after considerable amounts of cardio classes. You do alot of running though Angus, so that should help - and lay off the beer hey!!!!! (no comments about my red wine consumption, now!)

running will not get you "ripped" but it will tone the legs and it is great for the overall cardiovascular sytsem. Have fun running and enjoy your new legs.

if you just run or do those machine things that you you sweat a lot (i sweat a lot, my front adn back shirt is all wet) you will burn off the fat? (fat off the ab layer i mean?) just curious, because i hear so many things and its all confusing.

id personally think it would make sense to do crunches becasue wont they make your abs bigger and stronger? and if they are bigger and stronger, they are more likely to show. of course, i am probably wrong, but hey, never know.

i do crunches, but basic crunches, i want to know if im waisting time with them (i want more the look, than the stregnht on them first, then its the strenght :) ) ill still continue doing them, but ive been doing basic crunches for a while, hard to see results. oh well, thanks.

anyways, remember to drink your water if your running a lot.

Im brasilian, but live in the united states. Really enjoying martial arts.

Okay - running burns fat right? More than doing weights? Cos i want to stop putting on muscle for a while and concentrate on the aesthetics (that is toning). I want to lose a little more of the beer gut ( not that there's much there anymore) and kinda get 'ripped' so to speak.

Is it good to do toning with the weights every day?

weight training doesn't necessarily burn more fat than lifting weights. running will burn mucho calories WHILE you are running. after you stop running, the burning slows back down to normal. With weight training, you are building muscle. muscle requires more energy to maintain than fat, and thus you burn more calories just simply trying to maintain that increased muscle mass. So, even when you aren't training, you are burning at a higher rate than you would be if you had less muscle mass.

as for toning, there is really no such thing. I just posted something about this friday. I'm short on time now, but I'll copy and paste it tomorrow.

there is really no such thing as "tone". "tone" is merely a muscle that is in a constant state of semi tension. Flex your biceps right now. See the bulge? If you could hold that contraction all the time, you would always see it.... that is all tone is - constant tension in a muscle.
