goedikey
Hello, Being somewhat overweight myself (getting better though), I cant understand why I see high ranks in my karate class that are fat. I work so hard during my classes that I can even begin to worry about how hard the higher classes will be and yet I see overweight people. So my assumptions are the following : - MA doesnt burn fat as much as other sports or - You force less once you get the knack of things or- - Lowsy evaluations during belt tests. Or whatever else... Please clarify Thank you very much ! .
White_Tiger
I have told people do not use a MA class as an aerobic class, cause that is not what it is. You will burn calories in class, but some nights you will not burn as many. For example, if you spar an entire class you will burn more calories, than if you practice your side kick. I have seen overweight people with good technique. You are assuming just because a person is overweight that they can't possibly test well. That is stereotyping...I hope you get over that before going to competitions, or if you ever teach. Don't worry about how others in class look. Judge only yourself! Are you better than you were 3 months ago? Will you be better 3 months from now? If you are gifted athletically then don't look down on people who are not. Your Instructor may test you harder than he does overweight people, because he/she knows you can do better. Try to understand the humility the MA teach. Overweight or not...those people are in there trying, and enjoying themselves. Good luck in your training.
SaiFightsMS
Some -most - larger people involved in martial arts do have a degree of fitness. And most do loose weight while they are training. And think about the proportion of the general public that is overweight. Should they not also train? Your own experience training should begin to answer some of your questions. goedikey
Well, no offense meant. I am asking this question simply because I want to lose some weight too ! It is not to compare myself or make me feel better. NO! NO!
ninjanurse
Good advice white tiger! There are many "overweight" people that run marathons so outward appearance doesn't always coorelate with inner fitness. You can acheive physical fitness without losing weight by eating more calories than you are consuming.... and vice versa. Additionally, the harder you work in class the more calories you will burn. I can sweat and be out of breath after one kata if I increase the effort put into it.. and so can you! Work out hard and eat a healthy diet and you will lose weight and increase your fitness greatly. Good luck!
